The above noted document proposes significant changes or extensions to how content is modelled in Islandora 8. Currently each resource is modelled as one node (or more nodes as in the case of book) that has multiple media and each media will have one file. All derivatives are separate media. In fedora the non-binary/file resource will point to the media fields for the file's descriptive metadata.
The proposal is to allow for one media to contain multiple files. Files will be additional fields on the media. All files will point to the same fcr:metadata in fedora. This supports the use case where the additional file representations are needed, but they don't need to be separate media with metadata. One of the motivation is to avoid clutter in the media listing.
Danny proposed that the media can know about the files via predicates top down, which we seem to avoid due to some RDF best practices! Making use of Blazegraph for this type bi directional inferencing was also discussed.
It is proposed as an extension and not a replacement to the current model. It will serve the use case where additional files are need to be attached to media, where that file's metadata is of less importance such as thumbnails or transcripts.
It was discussed that the above proposed change should work with the Flysystem or storage configuration setup.
Rosie pointed out that additional metadata can be supplied to the files in a single media via additional fields, and that metadata will be synched to fedora.
Jared emphasized the need to set clear defaults with respect to modelling and behaviour as most people will change them.
Mark Jordan pointed that the use case where FITs info is needed for Preservation Master file as well as Original file. In that case, Seth recommended that they be separate media.
Danny noted that this extension will be useful addition as long as it does not break any backward compatibility.
