Description
Noticed while working umbrella #13935. Nothing has been touched — this is an inventory, not a cleanup.
What is there
$ git stash list | wc -l
113
Spanning 2026-04-23 → 2026-07-10 — roughly three months, then nothing for a month.
Oldest and newest entries:
2026-04-23 WIP on Dev_new_gui: fix(backend): move lazy_singleton import out of malformed try block in tracker.py
2026-04-24 On Dev_new_gui: WIP: useApiResource AbortController tests for #5179
2026-06-05 WIP on Dev_new_gui: fix(frontend): replace deprecated useApi with useApiClient
2026-06-05 WIP on issue-MVA-2999: fix(ci): update Storybook visual regression baselines (MVA-3530)
2026-07-10 WIP on issue-11449: fix(code-sync): /refresh message no longer implies a deploy happened
Several reference real issue numbers, so at least some of this is work someone started against a
tracked task and never landed.
Why this is a problem beyond the mess
The stash stack is shared repo-wide, not per-worktree. Many sessions run concurrently here, so:
- Any session running
git stash poporgit stash dropoperates on a stack it does not own, and
can silently consume or destroy another session's entry. git stashinside a worktree is already a known hazard for exactly this reason; 113 entries is
what that hazard looks like after it has been running unchecked for months.- Entries carry no owner and no issue link, so there is no way to route one back to whoever made it
without reading each diff.
By the "finish, don't discard" rule, none of these may simply be dropped: anything that looks like
debris is unfinished work until proven landed.
Ask
- Inventory before anything else. For each entry: does its diff already exist in
Dev_new_gui? A stash whose content has landed (very likely for the April ones) is safe to drop;
one whose content is absent is stranded work and needs an issue.
Note squash merges make--is-ancestoruseless here — compare content, or locate the commit
subject in the base. - Decide the disposition for the genuinely-unlanded remainder: revive as branches with issues,
or record and drop with the diffs attached to those issues. - Stop the source. Sessions should commit incrementally on their own worktree branch instead of
stashing, since the stack is shared. Worth a line in the git/worktree developer doc.
Not doing
I am not dropping, popping or reordering anything. None of these are mine, and a pop from a
concurrent session is how the stack gets corrupted in the first place.

Inventory — all 113 stashes, classified by content
Method: each stash's diff was tested with
git apply --check --3wayagainstorigin/Dev_new_gui.Reverse-apply clean → the change is already in the base (LANDED). Forward-apply clean → absent
and revivable. Neither → needs hand work. Keyed on commit SHA, not
stash@{n}, because indicesshift the moment any concurrent session touches the shared stack.
Dev_new_gui— nothing strandedThe 18 stranded ones — now durable branches on
originA stash is a commit, so each was branched directly at its own SHA: full change, original
parent, no apply step, no conflict resolution, and the stash entry left untouched.

rescued/stash-2026-06-03-44ddffdb4could not be pushed as-is — its untracked-filesparent captured a 126.93 MB model blob from
autobot-frontend/node_modules/wait-on/.fastembed_cache/,over GitHub's 100 MB limit. Its real content is 3 transcriber route files, re-committed cleanly as
rescued/stash-2026-06-03-44ddffdb4-tracked. Worth noting on its own: a stash capturednode_modules.What still needs doing (the point of #14078)
Every stranded stash is now a branch, so nothing can be lost by a concurrent
git stash drop. That is containment, not completion. Each branch still needs an owner and a verdict:
Dev_new_gui, open a PR, land it.never a silent drop.
that is the owner's call, and it must happen when no other session is mid-run, since the stack
is shared.
Root cause, not just cleanup
Sessions stash in worktrees. The stash stack is shared repo-wide, so an entry made in one
worktree is visible — and droppable — from every other. Three months of this produced 113 entries
with no owner, no issue link, and no expiry.
The fix is behavioural: commit incrementally to the worktree's own branch instead of stashing. That
belongs in the git/worktree developer doc, and #14078 is the evidence for why.
Notable finds
node_modules(a fastembed model blob), which is how welearned the stack holds build output as well as work.
consistent with the practice stopping rather than the backlog being cleared.

All 18 are refs on
origin, so no concurrentgit stash dropcan losethem, and the original stash entries were left untouched. What remains is a decision per branch:
land it or record why not.
The 95 LANDED entries are not tracked as children — their content is already in
Dev_new_gui,verified by reverse-apply. They can be dropped from the stack once someone confirms the sampling,
at a moment when no other session is mid-run.

Triage complete — all 18 rescued stashes have a verdict. 17 closed, 1 open
Every one was checked against
Dev_new_guiat content level, not bygit apply --check. Thatmatters: the rescue pass used "does the patch still apply?" as its landed/unlanded test, and that
test is wrong in both directions — a patch fails to apply when base has merely drifted, and
succeeds when base has been rewritten past it. Comparing added lines against base's copy of each
file gives a different answer for 17 of the 18.

The one that matters — #14087
rescued/stash-2026-06-04-36d1298b9carries a Bedrock credential-access audit trail: correlationIDs threaded through
_resolve_credentials()/_ensure_runtime_client(), and_log_credential_access_failure()writing to thesecrets_audittable.Checking it turned up something worse than a stranded stash. Base's
bedrock.pyno longer reads AWScredentials from

The 2026-08-11 pass classified 95 entries LANDED using
git apply --check --3way. The 2026-08-25pass then stated that this test "is wrong in both directions" and, on re-testing at content
level, overturned 17 of the 18 rescued verdicts. The 95 were never re-tested. They still carry
a verdict from a test this issue has already retracted.
That single fact settles the open checklist item: the 95 cannot be dropped from the stack. The
evidence for their disposal does not exist.
Why an automated content test cannot finish the job
I built one and it failed honestly, which is worth recording so nobody rebuilds it. For every
stash I extracted the tracked working-tree delta (
git diff <stash>^1 <stash>), took eachsignificant added line, normalised away all whitespace, and searched for it anywhere in the base
tree — 9,323 source files, 109 MB — not just in the file's own path, so that a module move still
counts as landed.
Calibrated against the 18 hand-verified verdicts, the score does not separate the classes:
…9c4ed9d61…a29826ebf…83f45ae45…36d1298b9…495ca57a2Confirmed-landed scores as low as 53%; confirmed-unlanded scores 48%. The ranges overlap
completely. Reformatting, rewrapping and rewriting since 2026-05 move the text far enough that
line identity stops tracking whether the change landed. The score is a screen, never a verdict —
only ≥97% is self-supporting.
Confident verdicts: 39 of 113
74 undecidable is the honest answer, not a failure. Each needs a human reading its files against
base; there is no shortcut that survives calibration.

refs. Fifteen of the 18 are already dispositioned as landed, superseded, obsolete or not-work —

The correct disposal path for a

Recommendation for #15306: exclude
refs/heads/rescued/*by prefix and say why in the workflow,so the exclusion is not re-litigated. It pairs with #15036, which found the neighbouring sweeps
misreport squash-merged branches as stranded — the same root cause, ancestry standing in for

Ask 5 — the sweeps that keep re-manufacturing this triage
The reason these 18 branches keep reappearing in automated reports is #15036, filed from this
umbrella. PR #15366 fixes it: the reporting sweeps now test landing rather than ancestry
or age, and
rescued/*andrelease/changelog-*are classified as archival. Over today's 76remote branches that is 37 landed / 29 archival / 10 unproven — the sweeps previously reported
all 76.
Fixing it turned up #15365:
branch-cleanup.yml's two deletion gates can never firehere —
git branch -r --merged origin/Dev_new_guireturns 0 branches under squash-merge,and
merged_pr_for_issue()filters onclosingIssuesReferences, which is empty for everymerged PR in this repository. Filed rather than fixed, because making a dormant automated
deleter start deleting is a decision.

Correction to the sweep numbers in my comment above
The 37 landed / 29 archival / 10 unproven figure is withdrawn. A review of PR #15366 found three ways the classifier produced a false
landed— a zero content measurement read as proof of landing, sibling lanes off one umbrella issue aliasing to each other, and a merged-PR match on head-ref name without checking the SHA. All three are fixed and each has a mutation-killed test.Re-measured over
refs/remotes/originafter the fixes: 45 enumerated — 30 archival, 0 landed, 15 unproven. Zero landed is the population, not a broken check: every branch that could be proven landed has since been deleted fromorigin. All 18
rescued/*branches are still present and untouched, and the shared stash stack still holds 113 entries. The archival count rose to 30 because a twelfthrelease/changelog-*branch appeared and one new rescue ref was added — see below.A branch was deleted with unlanded work on it
origin/issue-14288was removed from the remote while #14288 was closed and its fix was not in base. That is precisely the failure mode this umbrella exists to prevent, occurring on a branch rather than a stash.df8cdb26f9was still reachable in a local clone and has been preserved asrescued/issue-14288-unlanded-fix; #14288 is reopened with the evidence. The
rescued/prefix was chosen so PR #15366's helpers classify it archival and no sweep or cleanup will touch it. Worth noting for this umbrella's own record: the prefix now carries a second meaning — not only rescued stashes, but rescued deleted branches.mrveiss commentedon Sep 1, 2026

runs-on: ubuntu-latest, and one on aCLAUDE.mdindex row that predates the branch. Both failures share a shape worth naming: a check that cannot fail its own test. The stakes here make that specifically dangerous — a wrong "landed" means discarding work, and there is no undo.
The one verdict checked by hand, and it was wrong
origin/rescued/issue-14288-unlanded-fixwas reported landed (evidence:hosts: npu_worker). It is not:145 lines of guard, absent from base. Its sibling
cleanup-nodes.ymlchange is present-but-superseded, and would revert the #14856 data protections if applied — so even this one branch is neither wholly landed nor wholly unlanded, and a per-branch binary verdict cannot express it. Detail on #14288.That branch also has history here: per #15387, its predecessor was deleted once already while holding this same work.
What a usable verdict needs
Per branch, not per method:
git diff --name-only $(git merge-base <branch> origin/Dev_new_gui) <branch>git show <branch>:<file>againstgit show origin/Dev_new_gui:<file>— identical, differing, or absent on either side.Until a branch has that, it stays. By the finish-don't-discard rule, an unproven "landed" is not a disposal argument.

All 18 rescued stashes assessed — 17 fully resolved, the 18th is this issue itself
This umbrella asked that each of the 18 stranded stashes get an assessment. Here it is, for all of
them, with the method stated so it can be re-run rather than re-derived.
Method
Per-commit issue matching was tried first and produced 50 commits citing no issue at all, which
looked like untraceable work. It was the wrong granularity. Git's own stash messages record the branch
each stash was taken from (
index on <branch>:/WIP on <branch>:), and that attributes at thebranch level. Every one of the 18 resolved.
Landed-ness was tested with
git cherry(patch-id), not by comparing file contents — file comparisoncannot distinguish a rewrite from an absence.
Result: 17 of 18 have every associated issue already CLOSED or MERGED
The 18th is self-referential
stash-2026-06-03-44ddffdb4-trackedwas the only one referencing an open issue — and that issue isthis one, #14078, the umbrella that rescued it. Not evidence of live work; the rescue's own tracking
reference. Its substantive content (
autobot-backend/transcriber/routes/{__init__,ai,export,kb,projects,recordings,transcripts}.py)is present on
main— verified per file. What the commits actually are
The 50 "untraceable" commits are not lost features. Representative subjects:
They are the wreckage of interrupted merges — formatter output, regenerated codegen, and lint repairs
introduced by the merge itself. They carry no issue reference because they never were work items. The
first is literally git's own stash message, naming its source branch.
This also means per-commit issue cross-referencing would have produced spurious matches: a
blackreformat of
schemas_terminal.pyis not evidence of work on whatever issue last touched that file.Corroboration
An independent content triage of the same 18 (reported on #15237) reached a compatible verdict —
10 landed, 7 dead, 1 still-wanted — and found citations rather than inferring:
security/redaction.pyon
mainrepudiates one stash's AWS-sanitizer draft by name ("imported a module that was neverwritten, so it could not have run at all"), and 27 of one branch's 33 "missing" files were
auto-regenerated Storybook snapshots rather than authored content.
The single still-wanted item is a migration,
20260605_051_shared_link_tracking.py, addingview_count/last_accessed_at/require_logintochat_shared_links— genuinely absent frommain, migration-only with no model/API/frontend wiring, so a starting point rather than a finishedfeature. Being filed separately rather than landed as-is, since an unwired schema change is debris of a
different kind.
Standing recommendation
With every stash attributed and 17 of 18 fully superseded, the branches can be retired once the
migration is filed. Retiring them is what brings the repository within the branch-freshness ceiling —
these are the branches sitting 3,300-4,700 commits behind, and merging base into a dead stash satisfies
the number while leaving the debris.

Retiring 17 assessed stash branches — recovery SHAs recorded here first
Every branch below was assessed in the comment above: its stash provenance attributed, its
issues confirmed CLOSED or MERGED, and its content verified landed or dead. Retiring them is
what brings the repository within the branch-freshness ceiling — they are the branches sitting
3,300-4,700 commits behind, and merging base into a dead stash satisfies the number while
leaving the debris.
Recovery: a deleted branch is restorable from its tip SHA with
git push origin <sha>:refs/heads/<name>. Recorded before deletion, not after:Held back deliberately:
rescued/stash-2026-06-05-1557e2b21carries the one still-wanteditem — the
20260605_051_shared_link_tracking.pymigration addingview_count,last_accessed_atandrequire_logintochat_shared_links, genuinely absent frommain. It stays until that work is filed and landed.
Skipped any branch with an open PR or a live worktree; none of the 17 had either.

Re-verification of the 18 rescued-branch verdicts against today's

My attempted re-check compared the stash's full snapshot against today's main directly, which conflates 3+ months of unrelated main-side churn on those same 80 files with the stash's own content — not a valid re-derivation of "how much of the stash's own diff is still absent." Correction: the previous comment's bundle location was the session scratchpad, which lives under
