Coming back to an old Claude thread stacked two notices on the composer: "This thread is settled" and "Resume with less context". Neither one blocked sending, but together they made a pile you had to read through before typing.

Now each one lives where it fits:

  • Settled, snoozed, and woke show as one quiet line at the end of the chat history, like Settled 3h ago · Un-settle. They are thread state, not something Enter does, so they no longer use the banner stack.
  • Compaction moved to the send button. When a Claude thread has 100k+ tokens and has been idle for 70+ minutes, the button reads Compact and send. Enter runs /compact and then sends your message from the queue. The menu next to the button has Send with full history for the times you want to keep everything.

We tried compact-on-Enter in #15290 and reverted it in #15771, because the send changed with no visible sign. This version labels the button before you press Enter, and the full-history option sits one click away. The send logic is the same as #15290: /compact first, then the message with dispatchMode: "queue".

Notes:

  • I removed the per-session "Keep full history" dismissal. Its job is now done by Send with full history, one send at a time. The permanent "Don't ask again" setting from Claude's own prompt still turns the offer off.
  • Held queues and multi-model sends never compact first, so the button stays a plain send for them.
  • The native mobile app had no resume banner before and has no compact offer now. The web composer gets the offer at every width. When the narrow composer is collapsed, its send arrow expands it first, so the label always shows before anything sends.
  • The Claude SDK has its own resume prompt (resume_return). It could still ask after you pick full history. I found zero of those prompts in real data since the v2 orchestrator, so I left the server alone.

Before

Before: settled and compaction notices stacked on the composer

After

After: settled line at the end of the chat history, Compact and send button

After: send menu open with Send with full history

Proof: web typecheck, targeted lint, and the timeline and composer tests pass. On an isolated dev server with the thresholds lowered locally (not committed), a fresh Claude Sonnet 5.5 thread in a scratch project showed Compact and send. Clicking it ran /compact (27K → 2.85K tokens) and then the queued message, which Claude answered. Send with full history sent the next message with no compaction.

Proof: /compact then the queued message ran; Send with full history skipped compaction

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This changes the default send behavior for stale Claude threads: a normal send now performs a compaction turn first, with a new full-history override, alongside related composer and timeline UI changes. Because this is a user-facing product-default and runtime workflow change, it warrants human review.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The chat view replaces thread-state banners with a status line in the timeline footer. For eligible sends, the composer offers compact-and-send or full-history send. The send path can start a /compact turn before the message turn.

Eligible sends pass a token count to the composer. The composer offers compact-and-send and full-history send controls. On mobile, compact-and-send expands the composer. The Claude guide describes the behavior.
Compaction and message dispatch
apps/web/src/components/ChatView.tsx
An eligible send starts a /compact turn before the message turn. A full-history request or a /compact message bypasses this step. If compaction fails, the message turn does not start.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Render the footer for an empty thread.

If a server thread is settled before its first message, ChatView supplies a status line but this early return discards it. The “Settled” state and “Un-settle” action do not appear in the timeline. Keep the empty placeholder branch only when footer === null, or render the footer in that branch.

* fix(release): Forgejo build resolves version-qualified catalog overrides

Upstream now pins overrides such as undici@^8 to the catalog; the packaging
script looked up the whole selector and failed. Mirrors upstream pingdotgg#16411.

* fix(server): HTML renders and PDFs load behind a proxy that forbids framing

Clients frame asset documents from the environment's origin, which is
often not their own. A reverse proxy that adds X-Frame-Options: SAMEORIGIN
blanked every HTML render and PDF preview in that setup. Inline HTML and
PDF asset responses now carry `frame-ancestors *`, which browsers honour
in place of X-Frame-Options.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

* fix(server): desktop renderer may frame asset documents

CSP's `*` matches only http(s) ancestors, so the desktop app's custom
scheme origins are listed explicitly.
