Problem

CodeRabbit comments but never approves, so it can't tell maintainers which outside contributions are safe to merge on its review alone.

Change

On pull requests from anyone who isn't an org member or collaborator (ctx.pr.authorAssociation):

  • Request-changes workflow. CodeRabbit requests changes while it has open comments or a failing check. It approves once the latest commit is reviewed, its comments are resolved, and no check fails. main requires a pull request, so its "changes requested" review blocks merging until one of these happens:
    • CodeRabbit approves.
    • Someone other than the author comments @coderabbitai approve.
    • A maintainer dismisses the review.
  • Approvability check (error mode). It fails when a maintainer should read the pull request first, and says so. That covers:
    • changed product defaults
    • new or broadened suppressions
    • new subsystems and large refactors
    • breaking contract or data changes
    • auth and credentials
    • external side effects
    • dependency changes
    • CI, agent, or review config

Org members' and collaborators' pull requests are unchanged.

Who can lift the block. Merging still needs write access; CodeRabbit's ✅ means its issues are addressed and the pull request is worth a maintainer's look.

  • Anyone with write access can dismiss CodeRabbit's review, or comment @coderabbitai approve, which approves even while a check fails.
  • The author can't approve their own pull request through CodeRabbit or override a failed check. They can resolve CodeRabbit's threads themselves, as on any pull request. Once none are open and no check fails, CodeRabbit approves, so a failing Approvability check still holds.
  • Other outsiders can also comment @coderabbitai approve, since CodeRabbit checks only that the commenter isn't the author. On a pull request with auto-merge on, that can lift the last block.

Scope and approval

This changes how CodeRabbit reviews outside contributions, not product behavior. @juliusmarminge agreed to this flow in a private chat. I work at CodeRabbit.

Verification

  • Factory. tsc type-checks it against the SDK. I evaluated it for an owner, a member, a collaborator, a contributor, a first-time contributor, an unknown association, and no pull request:
    • With CodeRabbit's defaults filled in, the first three get exactly main's effective config, including @coderabbitai resolve and approve on their own pull requests.
    • Everyone else, including unknown authors, differs from main only in the gate's four settings.
    • Every output passes CodeRabbit's schema.
  • Repo checks: vp lint, vp fmt --check and knip pass.
  • In a fork, with this check and workflow:

CodeRabbit comments but never approves, so it can't tell maintainers
which outside contributions are safe to merge on its review alone.

On pull requests from anyone who isn't an org member or collaborator,
turn on the request-changes workflow and an Approvability check in
error mode that fails when a maintainer should read the pull request
first. Authors can't approve their own through CodeRabbit.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR changes CodeRabbit’s review and merge-flow behavior for outside contributors and adds a new approvability gate, so it requires maintainer review as a review-tool configuration change. An unresolved Medium finding also identifies an unconditional author-approval restriction affecting internal workflows.

Not approved because:

  • 1 blocking correctness issue found at or above your repo's Minimum Blocking Severity

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The CodeRabbit configuration now uses PR author association to gate review behavior. For gated authors, it enables the request-changes workflow, restricts reviewer overrides to requested reviewers, and runs the Approvability check in error mode. The check instructions define when the check passes or fails.

The configuration uses a context callback to gate settings for authors outside OWNER, MEMBER, and COLLABORATOR. For gated authors, it enables the request-changes workflow, limits reviewer overrides to requested reviewers, and runs the Approvability check in error mode. The check instructions describe when maintainer review is required, when the check passes, and when uncertainty causes failure.

Review details

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in .coderabbit.config.ts: The config now imports CodeRabbitContext and defines approvability instructions that fail for listed maintainer-review conditions, pass otherwise, and fail when the check cannot decide.
  • observed — Modified behavior in .coderabbit.config.ts: Adds author-association gating: OWNER, MEMBER, and COLLABORATOR are ungated; all other or missing associations are gated.
  • observed — Modified behavior in .coderabbit.config.ts: The exported configuration changes from a static object to a context-dependent callback. Gated authors get request-changes workflow, requested-reviewer-only overrides, and the Approvability custom check in error mode; for ungated authors, these settings are disabled. Existing review settings are retained.
  • observed — Modified behavior in .coderabbit.config.ts: Closes the configuration object returned by the new callback.

note: this is fully experimental. the intent is to be custom-tailored to what @juliusmarminge ideally wants as a maintainer. only way to really tell is by trying it.

and the beautiful thing is that if it isn't "it" for him, we can always change it. :)

* fix(server): threads settle as soon as a client sees their PR merge (pingdotgg#16761)

Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

* feat(server, web, mobile): agents see snooze state and link to threads (pingdotgg#16782)

* fix(release): Forgejo build resolves version-qualified catalog overrides

Upstream now pins overrides such as undici@^8 to the catalog; the packaging
script looked up the whole selector and failed. Mirrors upstream pingdotgg#16411.

* fix(server): HTML renders and PDFs load behind a proxy that forbids framing

Clients frame asset documents from the environment's origin, which is
often not their own. A reverse proxy that adds X-Frame-Options: SAMEORIGIN
blanked every HTML render and PDF preview in that setup. Inline HTML and
PDF asset responses now carry `frame-ancestors *`, which browsers honour
in place of X-Frame-Options.

* fix(server): desktop renderer may frame asset documents

CSP's `*` matches only http(s) ancestors, so the desktop app's custom
scheme origins are listed explicitly.
