I can't quite get it to work, but at a high level it seems like being able to press Enter inside a pattern-locked paragraph to still allow you to create another, would work, and arguably be better than the present alternative that creates br tags. Thanks for working on it! |

This looks to be a bug in trunk.
The logic for splitting blocks is to first test whether the default block can be inserted, and if not fall back to inserting another instance of the current block, so I don't think it's right that it was only checking blockName.
Anyway, this is what was preventing inserting paragraphs after pressing enter from a heading.

Thanks for this work. And hey, this is nice, I kind of love it:
We've spent a lot of time concerned about the problems with enabling this. But in practice, this feels very intuitive, natural, a "gloves off" moment. How do you feel about the code/feature? Any concerns? Some small things: we'll need to change the default paragraph placeholder text from "Type / to choose a block". This change seems actually necessary for pattern editing regardless: if the slash command doesn't work, which it wouldn't in an empty paragraph inside a locked pattern, it would need to say something else. We can either go minimal:

The meta "concern", is that we want to be careful in ensuring that patterns still have that "single block" feeling: if this becomes too much like regular editing mode, the point of the feature disappears. That feels like a non-issue in this PR, it still feels like I'm working with a single block, only it's nice I can press Enter. Not for this PR, but if we're allowing paragraphs, should we also allow the Markdown that lets you create lists and quotes? Another rabbit hole I'm sure, but at least "lists" feels like an organic extension. Aside kudos, this PR is timely as there was some good feedback on this issue, which it appears this PR addresses directly. |

Oh one other thing, I can select any block and press Enter to create a paragraph. That's nice. But in the pattern I showed above, there's a single paragraph "to start", I can't delete that even if I can delete "new" paragraphs I create. Should I be able to? |

There's a technical reason not to: we only allow inserting new paragraphs if a paragraph already exists. This was the best way we could find of enabling this behaviour consistently regardless of parent blocks or layers of nesting inside the pattern. From a usability perspective it doesn't seem terrible. If the pattern allows text, there's a text area always enabled, and if it doesn't, you can't add text where it doesn't exist. Of course ultimately the best way to get feedback is to try it and see what folks have to say about it 😅 |

This feels great to use to me, too!
✅ Can add additional paragraphs where a pattern already exists in content only mode
✅ Can remove all but the first paragraph
✅ In synced patterns with overrides, the paragraphs are still locked down
As Joen mentioned this feels like such an improvement, and personally this resolves the main resistance I had to the current feature. For my own use cases in pattern development, this feels like a really nice balance to me, and is well worth trying out in the plugin and seeing how it feels for others.
Some small things: we'll need to change the default paragraph placeholder text from "Type / to choose a block".
Agreed, but I reckon that could be looked at in a separate PR. Perhaps some logic could be added to the DefaultBlockAppender to swap out that default text depending on context.

Not a blocker IMO but this doesn't check that the other paragraph blocks are adjacent to the paragraph in question. It simply ensures there's at least 2 default blocks anywhere in the existingBlocks.
I reckon let's see how this change feels in practice, and whether this could use tweaking in follow-ups.

I noticed the same bug is reproducible if you insert a group and then limit its allowed blocks to paragraphs only (using the new 'Manage Allowed Blocks' feature), so I think it's something that can be addressed more generally. |

The default block seems like a good place to start. It is also possible to insert/remove other content blocks, but only ones that have a specific container (List items in List, Button in Buttons etc.). I think paragraph is a similar unit of content to list item, button.
They can't be inserted anywhere, only in the same block list as existing paragraphs. So if a pattern was designed with paragraph(s) in a certain area it allows more to be inserted.
I don't think additional paragraphs change the design dramatically.
It is possible to lock the parent group of a paragraph when designing the pattern (Lock All + Apply to all blocks inside), and that prevents any additional block. I notice it's a bit buggy with some blocks (List, Social), which is curious.
There's the ability to restrict allowed blocks, but there's no way to make a group or other block become a content container for contentOnly mode. I think it'd still be good to explore this, but maybe it's separate to this PR. Some thought needs to go into how it's presented to pattern creators. |

Would this mean creating a special "content container" block that we'd use to add content into? We shouldn't allow adding content to any group or container inside a pattern, because a major reason for contentOnly to exist is to hide the nesting complexity used to create layouts, and allowing addition of content anywhere within the nesting structure will invalidate that. I can't think of a good way to automate recognition of special content areas inside a pattern in order that we can label their containers accordingly, unless we expand the logic from this PR to all content blocks, so a content block can be added wherever another content block exists. I just gave that a try here: #75655 Otherwise, would we be depending on pattern authors to somehow flag the content areas in their patterns? We already have the tools for doing that with template locks. |

I wonder if it could be a checkbox in the 'Manage allowed blocks' modal - 'Allow content insertion in patterns' or something. It'd mean setting an attribute on blocks that indicates they support content insertion. |

Something like that could also be used to prevent content insertion in Cover blocks if the pattern doesn't require it. The problem would be existing patterns not being configured that way. |

That does already work, a pattern creator can set no allowed blocks, and the person inserting and filling in a pattern wouldn't be able to insert in a cover block (unless they use 'Edit section'). Locking options also work to prevent block removal. |

Just playing around for now. This PR adds checks to
canInsertBlockTypeUnmemoizedandcanRemoveBlockto enable adding/removing Paragraph blocks in contentOnly patterns where other Paragraph blocks already exist.It sort of works, but doesn't always work. Maybe in investigating why this doesn't always work we can come up with a better solution 😄
