What and why

On main an artboard can't be locked: the Artboards panel has no lock column, and the Artboard tool moves, resizes
and deletes any artboard. The lock follows Lock artboards
and Managing Artboards in Illustrator.

A click in the panel's new lock column locks or unlocks an artboard (artboard.setProps {index, locked}, or locked
on each entry of an artboards list). The Artboard tool and the artboard commands don't move, resize or delete a
locked artboard, and a new width or height for several selected artboards leaves the locked ones among them at their
size. The art on a locked artboard (each object of a layer whose bounds overlap it) acts as locked art: clicks,
marquees and the selection commands pass over it, and moving another artboard leaves it. Art drawn or pasted onto a
locked artboard stays editable until the selection leaves it out. Rearrange now moves each object of a sublayer with the artboard its center is on.

#2532 also adds artboard locking (the lock, an artboard.lock command and canvas menu items) and leaves the art on a
locked artboard editable; this branch also protects that art.

How it was tested

  • tests_panelcmds::a_locked_artboard_protects_the_art_on_it

Each test fails with its part of the change taken out. Targeted checks: clippy, cargo fmt, the doc, engine and
tools libraries (213, 2,255 and 377 passed), 102 ui-egui tests, and cargo xtask brands, layers and assets.

On Windows 11 (x86-64) with rustc 1.99.0, on top of main at bc1ae08:

  • CRAFT_FONTS_DIR=<craft-fonts checkout> cargo xtask ci passes its 10 steps: 8,585 tests passed, 0 failed, 13 ignored.

git merge-tree reports no conflicts with main at bc1ae08. With #2532, Artboard gets locked twice and 9 files
conflict: keep #2532's lock (field, artboard.lock, refusals, toggle) and this branch's art protection, and make
#2532's art_on_a_locked_artboard_still_moves expect the art to stay. #2403, #2038, #1867, #2497, #1295, #1838 and
#1281 also conflict with this branch; each resolution keeps both changes and applies the locked-artboard check where
they add a new path.

Checklist

  • cargo xtask ci passes (fmt, clippy, tests, assets, brands, layers, wasm).
  • No panics in shipped code: no unwrap(), expect(), panic!, unreachable!, todo! or
unimplemented! outside tests, and no unchecked indexing on data from files, parameters or
messages. Errors are returned as Result and shown to the user
    (why and how).
  • Clean-room: nothing copied from Adobe products or GPL/AGPL code (AGENTS.md).
  • Every new asset has a row in ASSETS.md.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Artboards can be locked or unlocked from the Artboards panel. Lock states are saved and support undo and redo.
  • Behavior Changes
    • Locked artboards cannot be moved, resized, deleted, renamed, copied, or rearranged; fitting leaves them unchanged.
    • Artwork held by locked artboards is excluded from selection, editing, hit testing, and text search.
    • Newly created or pasted artwork can remain editable while selected.
    • Moving or cutting leaves shared artwork behind unless moving locked artwork is enabled; copying can still include it.

An artboard couldn't be locked: the Artboards panel had no lock
column, and the Artboard tool moved, resized and deleted any artboard.

A click in the panel's new lock column, left of a row's options icon,
locks or unlocks the artboard in one undo step (artboard.setProps
{index, locked}), and the native format saves the lock. A document
without locks saves as before. A locked artboard keeps its place and
size. The Artboard tool and the artboard commands don't move, resize
or delete it ("the artboard is locked"), and its name isn't edited on
the canvas. A copy of it starts unlocked.

The art on a locked artboard is each object of a layer whose bounds,
with its strokes, overlap it. That art acts as locked art: clicks,
marquees, Select All and select.set pass over it, and an edit that
locks the artboard or moves art onto it deselects that art. Art drawn
or pasted onto a locked artboard stays selected and editable until the
selection leaves it out. When another artboard moves, scales or is
cut, the art also on a locked artboard stays unless prefs
moveLockedWithArtboard is on. Rearrange now moves each object of a
sublayer with the artboard its center is on. Before, it moved the whole
sublayer with the artboard under the sublayer's center.
document.inspect reports locked: true.

Two commits bring this branch up to date with main at e78116e:

  • 2edc704 merges main. Nine files conflicted, and each resolution keeps both changes. Cut Artboard now takes several artboards (Artboards: Duplicate Artboards, Copy and Cut take every selected artboard #2567) and fails when one of them is locked, and art that is also on another locked artboard stays when they are cut. Undo, Redo and the other edits deselect locked guides first, and then the art on a locked artboard. The marquee keeps main's clipping-mask rule and still leaves out art on a locked artboard.
  • bb328a3 adds the zh-hans row for "the artboard is locked", which main now requires.

The branch merges cleanly with main at e78116e. On Windows 11, cargo xtask ci passes its 10 steps: 7,861 tests passed, 0 failed, 11 ignored.

main now translates every status and error message into Georgian.
Add the ka row for "the artboard is locked".
main made Traditional Chinese a complete-message language, so the
artboard lock's "the artboard is locked" message needs a zh-hant row.
…tboards

Shift-clicking a layer's target circle counted its art on a locked
artboard when deciding whether to add or remove the layer's art. That
art is always deselected, so the click never removed the rest. The
toggle now leaves art on a locked artboard out of both the check and
the change.

Five commits bring this branch up to date with main at a466625:

  • bf1e71d merges main at cdba0aa. One file conflicted, crates/engine/src/cmd/layer.rs, and the resolution keeps both changes: New Artboard trims the name it is given and names a blank one Artboard N, and the new artboard starts unlocked.
  • 73e25fb adds the Georgian row for "the artboard is locked", which main now requires.
  • f2cc635 merges main at a466625, without conflicts.
  • 1cadbda adds the Traditional Chinese row for the same message, which main now requires.
  • 6c09472 fixes Shift-clicking a layer's target circle when some of the layer's art is on a locked artboard: the click now removes the rest of the layer's art from the selection instead of adding it again. tests::art_on_a_locked_artboard_cannot_be_selected_or_edited covers both clicks.

The branch merges cleanly with main at a466625. On Windows 11, cargo xtask ci passes its 10 steps: 8,330 tests passed, 0 failed, 12 ignored.

📝 Walkthrough

Artboards gain persisted lock state. Locked artboards restrict selection, editing, movement, and artboard operations. Commands, tools, interface controls, import paths, and documentation now account for locked artboards.

Changes: Locked Artboards

The document tracks locked artboards and newly created art. Hit testing and selection exclude protected art. Selection lifecycle updates preserve qualifying new art after edits, undo, redo, cancellation, isolation, grouping, and ungrouping.
Artboard operations and artwork movement

Artboard commands and the Artboard tool prevent changes to locked artboards. Moves, cuts, copies, duplication, scaling, and rearrangement apply lock-aware rules to artwork shared with locked artboards.
Lock-aware commands and tools
crates/engine/src/cmd/*, crates/tools/src/*, crates/engine/src/tests_distort.rs, crates/engine/src/tests_menucmds.rs
Commands and tools use document editability predicates when filtering targets. Liquify and document-wide text search exclude art held by locked artboards.

Possibly related PRs

  • storytold/vectorcraft#2532 adds the persisted Artboard.locked field and related artboard command restrictions used by this change.

Suggested reviewers: bflatastic, echelon

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to dfd82

Artboard locking works as described in the supplied evidence. The one remaining issue is minor overhead: every editability check does lock-related setup even in documents with no locked artboards. This is safe to merge, and the short-circuit can follow later.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to dfd82

The change primarily affects editing within a document rather than access permissions. Normal recovery paths preserve the new state, but one explicit text-editing command bypasses the lock rule. Broader security exposure was not established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · architecture · observed: The shared lock policy is not a mutation precondition for every command. perspective.editText requires a document but accepts an explicit projected-text id without checking editability, changes its editing state, and directly selects it after the normal protected edit completes. The command predates this PR, but it now bypasses the new artboard-lock contract. Normal selection cleanup and exit-isolation protection do not prevent this entry transition. This is local policy-enforcement drift; no privilege escalation or cross-document access was established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated lock-enforcement gap is bounded to projected text in the active document and requires a command caller supplying its node id. The inspected path obtains that node from the active document; it does not demonstrate cross-document, tenant, credential, or service-level authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — Saved lock values and supplied command targets influence local edit eligibility, but the inspected contract is not an authorization boundary against the command caller: artboard.setProps permits that caller to explicitly unlock the target. The lock-consistency concern therefore does not establish a new security privilege.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make explicit-target editing commands enforce document eligibility before mutation and route subsequent selection changes through the protected selection lifecycle. This would reduce drift between the shared lock contract and individual command paths without treating the lock as a security permission.

Short-circuit empty locked-artboard state in is_editable.

Direct command and tool callers repeatedly invoke is_editable. When no artboard is locked, this still initializes LockedArtboards, SymbolBoxes, and NewArtIds even though holds_id returns false. The editable() batch helper avoids this per-node cost in many multi-node paths, but direct checks still pay it.

The proposed artboards.iter().any check scans all artboards, as the existing construction already does. For documents with many unlocked artboards, it avoids the additional collections, SymbolBoxes, and read-lock access. It may scan twice when a locked artboard exists, so this remains an optional optimization rather than a correctness fix.

artboard.setProps accepts x, y, width and height values within 1e-6 pt
of a locked artboard's rectangle, as Artboard Options passes them when
it renames the artboard. It now leaves the rectangle exactly as it was

5e5357f makes artboard.setProps leave a locked artboard's rectangle exactly as it is when the x, y, width and height values are within 1e-6 pt of it, as Artboard Options passes them on a rename. Thanks @dotCooCoo. Artboard locking is documented Illustrator behaviour (helpx › Lock artboards): the panel's lock column, Lock Selected / Lock All Except Selected / Lock All, and the artboard's objects protected from moves and edits. This PR covers that more fully than anything else open. I'm holding it for a full review by the project owner rather than landing it on my own, for these reasons:

  • Overlap. Artboards: lock, colour and canvas menu (#2531) #2532 adds the same lock (plus artboard colours and the canvas menu), so only one lock should land. @vangel76, please coordinate here.
  • Editing state on Document. NewArtIds puts a RwLock on Document, with a PartialEq that is always true. The "new art stays editable while selected" rule this supports doesn't appear in the help page, so it needs a source or a simpler rule.
  • Conflicts. It conflicts with main (230 commits behind), so it needs a rebase either way.

dfd8200 merges main at bc1ae08; the four conflicts (selection.rs, cmd/layer.rs, panels/artboards.rs, docs/mcp.md) keep both sides, with artboard.setProps {artboards} reading locked per entry and a new width or height for several selected artboards leaving the locked ones at their size, each with a new test. CRAFT_FONTS_DIR=<craft-fonts checkout> cargo xtask ci on Windows 11 passes its 10 steps (8,585 tests passed, 0 failed, 13 ignored), and the branch merges cleanly with main now.

Avoid rebuilding LockedArtboards when no artboard is locked.

symbol_boxes() only initializes empty caches, so it does not measure symbol bounds during construction. However, is_editable still scans the artboards, constructs a new LockedArtboards, initializes those caches, and takes the new_art read lock on every call. This overhead affects repeated edit and hit-test paths.

- Around line 1468-1469: Update is_editable to short-circuit before constructing
LockedArtboards: when no entry in self.artboards has locked set, determine
editability directly from the node’s ancestry, requiring every ancestor node to
exist, be visible, and be unlocked; otherwise preserve the existing
is_editable_with and locked_artboards flow.
