Fixes #2531

Closes the G13 gap "artboard locking, artboard colours and managing artboards from the canvas (30.0)". Behaviour from the public help pages and community posts only (Lock Selected / Lock All Except Selected / Lock All, a lock toggle in the Artboards panel, artboard colours that Illustrator's own export controls treat as optional).

What changed

  • Document: Artboard.locked and Artboard.color, both serde-defaulted and not written when unset, so older files open unlocked and uncoloured and new files without them are unchanged.
  • Commands: artboard.lock (index/indices, mode selected | exceptSelected | all, locked), artboard.setColor (color or null). A locked artboard refuses artboard.move, artboard.setProps (position or size), artboard.delete, artboard.cut, artboard.fitToArt / fitToSelection and artboard.rearrange with "artboard N is locked". Name, colour, reorder and duplicate still work; a copy starts unlocked; its art is unaffected.
  • Export: artboardFill: true on document.export / document.serialize draws the artboard colours on a bottom layer of the exported copy (every format; the document is untouched). Off by default. Export As gets "Include Artboard Fill" for raster formats.
  • UI: Artboards panel lock toggle and colour chip per row, Lock/Unlock and Clear Artboard Color in the panel menu; Artboard tool: a locked artboard has no handles and ignores drags (Alt-drag still copies) and Delete; right-click on the canvas opens Lock Selected / Lock All Except Selected / Lock All and the Unlock entries; a lock mark beside the canvas name; the colour is painted behind the artboard on the canvas. Inline rename, move, delete and select on the canvas already existed.
  • i18n: all 19 catalogs (11 UI strings, 1 engine message).
  • Docs: gaps.md G13, ui-parity.md, target-app-parity.md (scores and hours unchanged).

Not done

  • No artboard-colour checkbox in the SVG, PDF and AI export dialogs (the command option works for them; stated in the docs).
  • The documentation found does not say whether a locked artboard may be renamed: ours may.

Tests

  • tests_artboard_lock.rs (engine): every refusing command, modes, no-op without undo step, undo, copy, art unaffected, artboardFill on/off. Fails without the guard and without the opt-in (checked by disabling each).
  • xform/artboard.rs: no handles, no move, no delete, Alt-copy still works.
  • panels/artboards.rs and tests_contextmenu.rs: the Artboard tool's context menu locks and unlocks; its labels are menu strings.
  • command_sweep.rs: hostile artboard.lock / artboard.setColor params. prop_format.rs: round trip and old files default.
  • Ran: engine lib, command_sweep, prop_format, tools lib, doc lib, ui-egui lib; clippy -D warnings --lib --tests on the touched crates; fmt; cargo xtask layers; cargo xtask wasm.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Artboards can now be locked or unlocked from the Artboards panel and canvas menu. Locked artboards can’t be moved, resized, or deleted, while their artwork remains editable. Copies of locked artboards can still be moved.
    • Set or clear colors for individual artboards to display them on the canvas. Raster exports can optionally include artboard colors as a background through the export dialog.
    • The Artboards panel shows each artboard’s lock state and color, while locked artboards display a lock icon on the canvas.

vangel76 and others added 2 commits October 17, 2026 15:57
Artboard lock (artboard.lock): a locked artboard can't be moved, resized, deleted, cut, fitted or rearranged by the Artboard tool, the Artboards panel or any command; its art is unaffected. Artboard colour (artboard.setColor): shown behind the artboard on the canvas and exported only with artboardFill (Export As offers it for raster formats). Both fields are saved with defaults for older files. Artboards panel lock toggle and colour chip, Artboard tool right-click Lock/Unlock menu, lock mark beside the canvas name, 19 catalogs.

A ruler-guide test that landed on main builds an Artboard literal, which now
names the locked and color fields; the Dutch, Danish and Indonesian catalogs that
landed meanwhile get the artboard lock and colour labels.

Rebased onto current main. Conflicts: crates/engine/src/cmd/panelcmds.rs (main's multi-artboard copy/cut now checks every cut artboard with ensure_unlocked), crates/engine/src/cmd/fileio/mod.rs (params doc keeps main's rect/embedIcc and the PR's artboardFill), and docs/gaps.md, docs/target-app-parity.md and docs/ui-parity.md (both sides kept). A follow-up commit adds locked/color to an Artboard literal in a ruler-guide test that landed on main, and adds the new labels to the nl, da and id catalogs (translations worth a native review). Checks run locally: cargo fmt --check; cargo check --workspace --all-targets; cargo test -p vectorcraft-engine --lib -- artboard; cargo test -p vectorcraft-tools --lib -- rulerguide; cargo test -p vectorcraft-ui-egui --lib -- i18n::. All passed. Full suite left to CI.

📝 Walkthrough

Artboards gain persisted lock and colour settings. Commands and interface controls manage both properties. Locked artboards reject specified geometry and deletion operations while their artwork remains editable. Coloured artboards render on the canvas and can be included in exports.

Changes: Artboard locking and colour

Layer / File(s) Summary
Artboard state and defaults
crates/doc/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/fileio/*, crates/engine/src/cmd/{menucmds.rs,newdoc.rs}, crates/{eps/src/import/ai/read.rs,pdf/src/import.rs,svg/src/import.rs}, crates/format/tests/prop_format.rs, crates/pdf/src/tests*.rs, crates/tools/src/rulerguide.rs
Artboards store a lock flag and optional colour. Constructors, generated artboards, and import paths initialize both fields. Tests cover persistence and older-file defaults.
Lock commands and enforcement
crates/engine/src/cmd/{layer.rs,menucmds.rs,panelcmds.rs,xform.rs}, crates/engine/src/tests_artboard_lock.rs, crates/engine/tests/command_sweep.rs, crates/engine/src/lib.rs
New commands lock and unlock artboards and set or clear colour. Move, resize, delete, cut, fit, and rearrange commands check locked artboards. Copies start unlocked. Tests cover lock modes, restrictions, undo, and validation.
Artboard tool and panel controls
crates/tools/src/xform/artboard.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/{canvas.rs,menus.rs,panels/artboards.rs,tests_contextmenu.rs}
The Artboard tool blocks movement, resizing, and deletion of locked artboards while allowing Alt-drag copies. Canvas menus and panel controls provide lock actions. Panel rows display lock state and provide colour controls.
Canvas colour and export fills
crates/doc/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/fileio/{export.rs,mod.rs}, crates/engine/src/tests_artboard_lock.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/{canvas.rs,dialogs/export_as.rs}, docs/{gaps.md,target-app-parity.md,ui-parity.md}
Coloured artboards render on the canvas. Exports add artboard fills only when artboardFill is enabled. The raster export dialog shows the option when a document contains coloured artboards. Documentation records the feature and notes that SVG, PDF, and AI export dialogs do not offer the colour option.

  • storytold/vectorcraft#2592: Extends the same Artboard.locked state to object selection, editing, hit testing, rearrangement, and additional panel and canvas operations.

Suggested reviewers: bflatastic, dotcoocoo

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 40a13

Locked-artboard renaming and colour-picker feedback may behave incorrectly in narrow cases. Address these before merging or explicitly accept the limited impact.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 40a13

The changes remain within document editing and export workflows. Lock checks are enforced before restricted mutations, and export fills are generated on a copy. No material security regression was established, but export-option interactions and broader caller coverage remain partially assessed.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated effect is bounded to the active document and its requested export outputs. The inspected routes add document-editing capabilities without demonstrating new tenant, service, credential, or filesystem authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Menu-generated indices are not the enforcement boundary: direct command callers receive engine-side target validation and geometry lock checks. Unlocking intentionally changes an editable document property rather than granting a security principal additional authority.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Export-fill construction allocates generated nodes only in a document copy, so an encoder error does not persist the fill layer in the source document. The artboard tool also cancels an Alt-copy interaction when changing back to a prohibited move, and clears drag state on Escape or deactivation.

Add a regression test for with_artboard_fill.

The function builds a new layer and one rectangle per coloured artboard. The reviewed files do not show a test for it that does not go through document.serialize. The behaviour is covered end to end in tests_artboard_lock.rs. This is optional.

Limit artboardFill to artboards represented in a selected-only export.

When document.export uses selectedOnly: true and useArtboards: false, export_source retains every document artboard. with_artboard_fill() then adds a rectangle for every coloured artboard, including artboards with no selected roots. The visible-art bounds include those rectangles, so the export can contain unrelated coloured artboards and violate the selectedOnly contract. Keep fill rectangles only for artboards that contain retained selected art.

Thanks @vangel76, the menu names are right. Two parity points before it lands: an artboard lock in Illustrator protects the artboard and the content on it from being selected, moved or edited, while this locks only the artboard; and Include Artboard Fill is offered on JPEG, PDF and SVG export in Illustrator, not PNG, while this puts it in the raster Export As and leaves it out of SVG and PDF. It also conflicts with main in docs/ui-parity.md.

@vangel76, a heads-up: #2592 implements the artboard lock including its art, which is the point I raised above, across hit testing, marquee, Select All and the tools. To avoid two locks, it may be simplest to drop the lock from this PR and keep the artboard colour (with Include Artboard Fill on JPEG, PDF and SVG export) and the canvas menu. The owner will make the final call on the lock.

A correction to my last note: #2403 also adds the artboard colour (Properties › Fill and Artboard Options, with the helpx source), so of this PR's three parts, the lock overlaps #2592 and the colour overlaps #2403. Please hold off on reworking anything until the owner decides how to split them. Only the canvas menu is unique to this PR.

Compare geometry with a tolerance before the lock check.

rect_from(q, was) rebuilds the rectangle as x + (x1 - x0) and clamps the size with .max(1.0). When an artboard has fractional coordinates, as imported PDF and AI artboards often do, x0 + (x1 - x0) may not equal x1 exactly in floating point. now != was is then true for a name-only edit. A locked artboard therefore rejects a rename with "artboard N is locked". The resized check on the next line already uses a 1e-6 tolerance, so the two checks disagree.

Panel and Control-bar renames call artboard.setProps with .ok(). In that case the rename fails without any message.

Apply the lock only when the rectangle changes beyond the same tolerance:

Start the picker from the pending colour while a drag is in progress.

rgb is set from the document colour on every frame. During a drag in the picker, the pending value is stored in pending_id, but the next frame passes the old document colour to color_edit_button_srgb again. As a result, the picker and the chip do not show the colour being dragged until the pointer is released. Also, the sliders that the user is not dragging fall back to the document colour on every frame.

Read the pending value first:

Read the source at 40a139c; I found no defect. Every route that moves, resizes or deletes an artboard goes through ensure_unlocked (artboard.delete, setProps and so fitToSelection, fitToArt, move without copy, cut, rearrange when the layout would move it), a copy starts unlocked, the Artboard tool has no handles or drag on a locked board, and artboardFill is opt-in on export, with the fill on a bottom layer. FreeBSD x86_64 build and test is green.

Holding the approval only for CI: the affinity3 job failed in "Fetch pinned and checksum-verified corpus" (curl exit 35 fetching a fixture from raw.githubusercontent.com), so none of its tests ran on this head: job. The PR touches the Affinity importer's artboard construction, so a re-run that passes is the evidence I want. I'll approve once it is green.
