What and why

Outline Stroke put a stroke's geometry effects, such as Offset Path or Zig Zag, on the filled outline it made, and it put the object's geometry effects on the result: the outline, or the group that holds the outlines and the fill copies. The effects then reshaped the outline instead of the path: an Offset Path of 10 pt on a 4 pt stroke gave a band 24 pt wide, while the canvas offsets the path and strokes it 4 pt wide. The reference app's help describes Object › Path › Outline Stroke on a page that says "Converting a Stroke to a Compound Path allows for modifying the outline of the Stroke" (Convert strokes to compound paths). The page does not say how effects are handled. This change makes the outline match what VectorCraft's canvas draws.

  • object.path.outlineStroke applies the object's visible geometry effects to the path first, and then applies each stroke's own geometry effects to the path that stroke outlines, in the order the canvas applies them. A brushed stroke's art follows that path too.
  • The filled outline of a stroke without a brush keeps the stroke's other effects, such as a drop shadow, and the result keeps the object's other effects.
  • Expand's Stroke option and Flatten Transparency's Convert All Strokes to Outlines outline strokes the same way.
  • docs/target-app-parity.md has one line for it. No command, param or reply changes, so docs/mcp.md is unchanged.

#2616 adds the same two helpers (reshaped, with_path) privately to expand.rs. This branch adds them to pathops.rs and does not depend on #2616.

How it was tested

New tests in tests_outlinestroke (vectorcraft-engine), each failing on main:

  • a_geometry_effect_on_the_stroke_shapes_the_path_it_outlines: Offset Path and Zig Zag on the stroke, through Outline Stroke, Expand and Flatten Transparency, render as the canvas did (7,680 and 2,972 pixels differ on main), and the outline has the box and area of the offset path's stroke
  • a_geometry_effect_on_the_object_shapes_the_path_it_outlines: Offset Path and Zig Zag on a filled object render as the canvas did through the same three commands (7,680 and 2,880 pixels differ on main)
  • the_outline_of_a_reshaped_stroke_keeps_its_drop_shadow: the outline keeps only the drop shadow and renders as the stroke did
  • a_brush_draws_along_the_path_the_stroke_effects_make: a brushed stroke with Offset Path renders as it did once outlined

Targeted checks on the final tree: cargo clippy -p vectorcraft-engine --all-targets -- -D warnings; cargo test -p vectorcraft-engine --lib; cargo test -p vectorcraft-engine --test command_sweep; cargo fmt --all -- --check; cargo xtask brands, layers and assets.

On Windows 11 (x86-64) with rustc 1.99.0, on top of main at bc1ae08 (merged into the branch):

  • CRAFT_FONTS_DIR=<craft-fonts checkout> cargo xtask ci passes its 10 steps: 8,575 tests passed, 0 failed, 13 ignored.

The branch has main at bc1ae08 merged in and merges cleanly with it. It also merges cleanly with #2592, which changes pathops.rs.

Checklist

  • cargo xtask ci passes (fmt, clippy, tests, assets, brands, layers, wasm).
  • No panics in shipped code: no unwrap(), expect(), panic!, unreachable!, todo! or
unimplemented! outside tests, and no unchecked indexing on data from files, parameters or
messages. Errors are returned as Result and shown to the user
    (why and how).
  • Clean-room: nothing copied from Adobe products or GPL/AGPL code (AGENTS.md).
  • Every new asset has a row in ASSETS.md.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved Outline Stroke, Expand with Stroke, and Flatten Transparency results when geometry effects, stroke brushes, drop shadows, or transformed gradients are applied.
    • Geometry effects are now reflected in outlined paths while other visual stroke effects are preserved.
    • Improved rendering consistency for strokes within transformed artwork and nested groups.
  • Documentation

    • Updated target application parity documentation to reflect geometry-effect handling during stroke outlining.

…s on the canvas

Outline Stroke put a stroke's geometry effects, such as Offset Path or
Zig Zag, on the filled outline it made, and it put the object's
geometry effects on the result: the outline, or the group that holds
the outlines and the fill copies. The effects then reshaped the
outline: an Offset Path of 10 pt on a 4 pt stroke gave a band 24 pt
wide, while the canvas offsets the path and strokes it 4 pt wide.

Outline Stroke now applies the object's visible geometry effects to
the path first, and then applies each stroke's own geometry effects to
the path that stroke outlines, as the canvas does. A brushed stroke's
art follows that path too. The filled outline of a stroke without a
brush keeps the stroke's other effects, and the result keeps the
object's other effects.
Expand's Stroke option and Flatten Transparency's Convert All Strokes
to Outlines outline strokes the same way.

Thanks @dotCooCoo. Holding this one for the project owner's call on parity: as far as public descriptions go, Illustrator's Object › Path › Outline Stroke outlines the path itself and leaves live effects out (people run Expand Appearance first to keep them), so baking geometry effects into the outline would be our own behaviour. If it goes ahead, reshaped and with_path already exist on main in cmd/expand.rs (from #2616), so please import them from there instead of adding second copies.

Read the full diff at this head. outline_strokes now applies the object's visible geometry effects to the path first (reshaped) and then each stroke's own geometry effects to the path that stroke outlines, stripping them from the stroke afterwards so they are not applied twice, and Expand and Flatten Transparency reach the same code. The new tests render before and after for Outline Stroke, Expand with Stroke and Flatten Transparency and check the geometry effects are gone from the result. The FreeBSD build and test job passed at this head. Approving.

Outline Stroke: geometry effects reshape the path that is outlined, as on the canvas. Checklist cargo xtask ci is ticked.

outline_strokes in pathops.rs now imports reshaped from expand.rs, which
has had it since storytold#2616, and the copies of reshaped and with_path that
this branch added to pathops.rs are removed. The two copies were
identical, so Outline Stroke and Expand behave as before.
…gradient

A path whose Transform effect makes copies and that has a gradient fill
or stroke is drawn on the canvas as separate copies, each painting its
gradient by itself. Outline Stroke merged the copies into one path, so
the gradient stretched across all of them. It now outlines the strokes
of the art the canvas draws, as Expand Appearance does. Expand's Stroke
option and Flatten Transparency's Convert All Strokes to Outlines
change the same way.

Merged main at bc1ae08 into the branch, then pushed two commits:

  • a5f3298: outline_strokes now imports reshaped from cmd/expand.rs, and the copies of reshaped and with_path in pathops.rs are removed. with_path stays private in expand.rs because pathops.rs no longer calls it. The move does not change behavior, so it adds no test.
  • 8afb606: a path whose Transform effect makes copies and that has a gradient fill or stroke is outlined from the copies the canvas draws, so each copy keeps its own gradient, as Expand Appearance does. Before this commit the branch merged the copies into one path and the gradient stretched across them. New test tests_outlinestroke::each_transform_copy_keeps_its_own_gradient: without the fix, 9,984 (fill) and 4,896 (stroke) pixels differ after Outline Stroke, Expand and Flatten Transparency.

On Windows 11 (x86-64) with rustc 1.99.0, on 8afb606 (main at bc1ae08 merged in): CRAFT_FONTS_DIR=<craft-fonts checkout> cargo xtask ci passes its 10 steps: 8,575 tests passed, 0 failed, 13 ignored.

The branch merges cleanly with main at bc1ae08.

Preserve the effect seed until copied strokes are outlined.

When has_gradient_copies(l) is true, d.reid assigns fresh IDs before outline_member_strokes evaluates each copied stroke. distort.transform takes its Random seed from the node ID, while the canvas reshapes the original node before drawing. The outlined stroke can therefore differ from the canvas rendering. Reassign IDs after stroke geometry evaluation.
