What and why

On main, the perspective, width point, Liquify and Puppet Warp commands read their on/off params with bool_or or as_bool, which treat a value that is not true or false as if the key were left out. perspective.move {"copy": "true"} moves the objects instead of copying them, and perspective.grid.show {"visible": "true"} hides a grid that is shown. Each call reports success. The reference app's perspective page says "You can move, copy, or scale objects in perspective using the Perspective Selection tool. You can also move objects in a perpendicular direction to the current object's location" (Draw and modify objects on the perspective grid).

  • perspective.move (copy, perpendicular, snap), perspective.transform (copy), perspective.nudge (big, copy), perspective.draw (snap), perspective.grid.set (reproject), perspective.grid.show (visible), stroke.widthPoint.set (adjustAdjoining), object.liquify (usePressure, simplifyOn, affectAnchors, affectIn, affectOut) and object.puppetWarp (rest) fail with "<key> must be true or false" for a value that is not true, false or null, the message the Rectangular Grid and Polar Grid commands and the overprint commands give (crates/engine/src/cmd/create.rs:423, overprint.rs:124). The document and its undo history stay as they were. A null is read as a key left out, so a null visible still toggles the grid.
  • perspective.draw refuses such a snap before it draws the shape, and object.liquify refuses such a key whichever tool it is given with.
  • object.liquify's params text gives usePressure, affectAnchors, affectIn and affectOut as bool. docs/mcp.md lists the keys, and docs/target-app-parity.md has one line for the change. The true-or-false message already has a row in every complete catalog. The change adds no new message text and no catalog rows.

How it was tested

New tests in tests_distort (vectorcraft-engine), each failing on main, where the first call succeeds:

  • perspective_moves_refuse_a_boolean_given_as_text gives copy, perpendicular and snap to Move in Perspective, copy to Transform in Perspective, and big and copy to Nudge in Perspective as strings, a number or an array; the object stays where it is, nothing is copied, and each command still works with nulls.
  • perspective_draw_refuses_snap_given_as_text gives snap the same values; no shape is drawn, and a null snap draws on the active plane.
  • perspective_grid_commands_refuse_a_boolean_given_as_text gives reproject to Define Perspective Grid and visible to Show Perspective Grid; the grid, the object on it and the undo history stay as they were, a null reproject leaves the object where it is, and a null visible toggles the grid.
  • width_point_set_refuses_adjust_adjoining_given_as_text gives adjustAdjoining for a new point and for a point given by its index; the profile stays as it was, and with a null the points either side keep their widths.
  • liquify_refuses_a_boolean_given_as_text gives each of the five keys with the Warp or Crystallize tool; the path stays as it was, and the Warp tool still warps it with a null usePressure and simplifyOn.
  • puppet_warp_refuses_rest_given_as_text gives rest; the art stays as it was, and a null rest warps it.

Targeted checks while building: cargo clippy -p vectorcraft-engine --all-targets -- -D warnings; cargo test -p vectorcraft-engine --lib and --test command_sweep; cargo fmt --all -- --check; cargo xtask brands, layers and assets.

On Windows 11 (x86-64) with rustc 1.99.1, on top of main at bc1ae08:

  • CRAFT_FONTS_DIR=<craft-fonts checkout> cargo xtask ci passes its 10 steps: 8,576 tests passed, 0 failed, 13 ignored.

git merge-tree reports no conflicts with main at bc1ae08. #2592 and #1858 also change crates/engine/src/cmd/distortcmds.rs, in other functions. The branch merges cleanly with #2592's head dfd8200, and cargo check -p vectorcraft-engine --tests passes on that merge and with this change applied on #1858's head 49b4ade.

Checklist

  • cargo xtask ci passes (fmt, clippy, tests, assets, brands, layers, wasm).
  • No panics in shipped code: no unwrap(), expect(), panic!, unreachable!, todo! or
unimplemented! outside tests, and no unchecked indexing on data from files, parameters or
messages. Errors are returned as Result and shown to the user
    (why and how).
  • Clean-room: nothing copied from Adobe products or GPL/AGPL code (AGENTS.md).
  • Every new asset has a row in ASSETS.md.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Boolean command options now accept only true, false, null, or omission as appropriate.
    • Invalid values such as strings and numbers now return clear parameter errors without changing artwork, selections, or undo history.
    • null is treated consistently as an omitted optional value across distortion and perspective commands.
    • Liquify documentation now notes that usePressure defaults to true.
  • Documentation

    • Added guidance covering boolean validation and error behavior for affected commands.

…is refused

The perspective, width point, Liquify and Puppet Warp commands read
their on/off params in a way that treats a value that is not true or
false as a key left out. perspective.move {"copy": "true"}
moved the objects instead of copying them, and perspective.grid.show
{"visible": "true"} hid a grid that was shown. Each call reported
success. Move in Perspective also ignored perpendicular and snap given
as text, Transform in Perspective ignored copy, and Nudge in
Perspective ignored big and copy. Draw in Perspective ignored snap, and
Define Perspective Grid ignored reproject. Width Point ignored
adjustAdjoining, Liquify ignored usePressure, simplifyOn, affectAnchors,
affectIn and affectOut, and Puppet Warp ignored rest.

These commands now fail with "`<key>` must be true or false", the
message the Rectangular Grid, Polar Grid and overprint commands give,
for a value that is not true, false or null, and leave the document
and its undo history as they were. Draw in Perspective refuses such a
snap before it draws the shape, and Liquify refuses such a key
whichever tool it is given with. A null is read as a key left out, so
a null visible still toggles the grid. object.liquify's params text
gives usePressure, affectAnchors, affectIn and affectOut as bool.

📝 Walkthrough

Distortion and perspective commands now reject non-boolean values for boolean options. Missing and null values use command-specific defaults or existing toggle behavior. Tests and documentation cover the updated validation.

Changes: Command Parameter Validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Distortion option validation
crates/engine/src/cmd/distortcmds.rs, crates/engine/src/tests_distort.rs
A shared helper validates boolean options for width-point, Liquify, and Puppet Warp commands. Tests check invalid values, null, and unchanged document state on validation errors.
Perspective option validation
crates/engine/src/cmd/distortcmds.rs, crates/engine/src/tests_distort.rs, docs/mcp.md, docs/target-app-parity.md
Perspective grid, drawing, movement, transformation, and nudge commands validate boolean options. Tests and documentation cover rejection of invalid values and preservation of document state.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Suggested reviewers: bflatastic

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 3caf3

The change makes perspective, width-point, Liquify and Puppet Warp commands reject non-boolean values and leave the document and undo history unchanged. No merge-blocking risk is evident.

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 3caf3

The change rejects malformed boolean options before editing artwork or changing undo history. The reviewed changes preserve valid-input behavior and do not introduce a material security risk.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed behavior is bounded to existing commands operating on the current session's artwork, perspective grid, interaction state, and history. The inspected changes narrow accepted input types rather than adding command reachability or target-selection authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Caller-controlled options encounter strict type validation before the affected mutations. Perspective drawing retains its existing shape-command restriction and nested execution path; this PR does not broaden that delegation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Invalid boolean input is rejected before Liquify consumes its active stroke and before perspective operations record repeat parameters. Repeated malformed requests therefore do not advance those interaction or repeat-state transitions.

Validate snap before snap_fix can read it, and keep validation order consistent.

switch_or(p, "snap", true, C)? runs after plane_param and the other checks, but before snap_fix. This ordering is correct, because the error is raised before any edit. The result is discarded, and snap_fix still re-reads snap from p. This is acceptable now. The two readers can diverge if snap_fix later changes how it interprets snap.

Pass the validated value to snap_fix, or add a test that ties both readers to the same contract.
