What and why

A click with the Selection tool and Select All leave template layers out, locked or not, but other paths selected
their art once the layer was unlocked. On main, after layer.setProps {id: layer, template: true, locked: false},
the objects selected on the layer stay selected, and the target circle (layer.target), the selection column
(layer.selectAll), the Magic Wand, the Lasso, Direct Selection's presses and marquee and a Shaper tap select art on
it.

These paths now pass over a template layer and the objects on one as they pass over locked art. layer.target refuses
them with "template layers and their objects can't be selected", which has a row in each complete-message catalog,
and layer.selectAll selects nothing. Making a layer a template, or moving objects onto an unlocked one, deselects
them as locking does. A targeted layer with no art stops being targeted when it is made a template or locked.

How it was tested

All eight tests fail on main, and putting the changed checks back as on main makes each test fail at the check it
covers:

  • tests_layers::the_selection_column_and_the_target_circle_leave_template_art_out
  • tests_layers::a_template_layer_deselects_its_art_locked_or_not
  • tests_layers::an_empty_targeted_layer_made_a_template_or_locked_is_no_longer_targeted
  • cmd::wand::tests::template_layers_are_left_out
  • tests_shaper::shaper_taps_pass_over_a_template_layer
  • direct::tests::template_layers_are_passed_over_as_locked_ones_are
  • xform::wand::tests::lasso_passes_over_template_layers
  • i18n::tests::layer_target_template_param_error_is_translated

On Windows 11 (x86-64) with rustc 1.99.0, on top of main at bc1ae08:

  • CRAFT_FONTS_DIR=<craft-fonts checkout> cargo xtask ci passes its 10 steps: 8,578 tests passed, 0 failed, 13 ignored.

git merge-tree reports no conflicts with main at bc1ae08. It conflicts with #2592, which adds locked artboards to
the same checks in selection.rs, wand.rs, shaper.rs, direct.rs and the Lasso. Keeping its locked-artboard
checks and this template check at each of those lines resolves it.

Checklist

  • cargo xtask ci passes (fmt, clippy, tests, assets, brands, layers, wasm).
  • No panics in shipped code: no unwrap(), expect(), panic!, unreachable!, todo! or
    unimplemented! outside tests, and no unchecked indexing on data from files, parameters or
    messages. Errors are returned as Result and shown to the user
    (why and how).
  • Clean-room: nothing copied from Adobe products or GPL/AGPL code (AGENTS.md).
  • Every new asset has a row in ASSETS.md.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Template layers and their artwork can no longer be selected or targeted, even when unlocked.
    • Selection tools—including Magic Wand, Lasso, Direct Selection, and Shaper—now consistently skip template-layer content.
    • Converting a layer to a template deselects its artwork while preserving correct undo behavior.
    • Targeting template layers now returns a clear translated error.
    • Selecting all on template layers or their sublayers now selects nothing.
  • Documentation

    • Updated selection and targeting guidance to clarify template-layer behavior.

…cked template layer

A click with the Selection tool and Select All leave template layers
out, locked or not, but other paths selected their art once the layer
was unlocked (Layer Options with Template on and Lock off): the Layers
panel's target circle and selection column, the Magic Wand, the Lasso,
Direct Selection's anchor and spine-point presses and its marquee, and
a Shaper tap. layer.setProps {template: true, locked: false} also left
the layer's objects selected, and a drag then moved them.

These paths now pass over a template layer and the objects on one as
they pass over locked art. layer.target refuses them with "template
layers and their objects can't be selected", which has a row in each
of the 17 complete-message catalogs. Making a layer a template, or
moving objects onto an unlocked one, deselects them as locking does.

Thanks @dotCooCoo. Holding this one for the project owner's call on parity: the public documentation calls template layers locked and nonprinting by default but doesn't say an unlocked template layer can't be selected or isolated, so we want to confirm Illustrator's behaviour before making it ours. The code itself looks fine.

Read the full diff at this head. Document::is_selectable adds a template-layer check to is_editable and is used by selection pruning, the Layers panel's selection column and target circle, the Shaper group pick and the Magic Wand, so art on a template layer is no longer selectable even when unlocked, and the command descriptions say so. The new Magic Wand and Layers tests cover the unlocked template case. The FreeBSD build and test job passed at this head. Approving.

📝 Walkthrough

Selection now excludes objects on template layers, including unlocked template layers. The change applies to layer commands, selection cleanup, Shaper, Magic Wand, Direct Selection, and Lasso. Tests and documentation cover these selection rules.

Change: Bug fix

Suggested reviewers: bflatastic

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 4b3f9

Two selection paths do not yet honor the PR’s template-layer exclusion, so the change should be corrected before merging.

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 4b3f9

The change narrows artwork selection without granting additional access or editing authority. The affected edits preserve document and selection state together through failure and undo.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated impact is selection and targeting within the active document. The inspected base-to-head changes narrow candidate sets rather than adding callers, privileged operations, or cross-service access.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — Template exclusion is a selection-eligibility rule, not comprehensive editing authorization. Unchanged explicit-ID selection commands and target resolution remain outside this predicate, so their existing reachability is not a bypass introduced by this PR. The change does not establish universal template exclusion across every command path.

The new head 0b5fe57 merges main at bc1ae08. The one conflict was in crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/tests.rs, where main added effect_channel_param_error_is_translated next to this branch's layer_target_template_param_error_is_translated; the resolution keeps both tests, and ka.tsv and zh-hant.tsv get rows for the new "template layers and their objects can't be selected" message. On Windows 11 with rustc 1.99.0, cargo xtask ci passes its 10 steps (8,577 tests passed, 0 failed, 13 ignored), and the branch merges cleanly with main now.

🟡 Minor · Apply template filtering to the enclosed Group Selection marquee. · direct.rs:815

crates/tools/src/direct.rs:815
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Apply template filtering to the enclosed Group Selection marquee.

When enclosed is true, this branch keeps IDs with is_editable, while the ordinary marquee uses is_selectable. An unlocked template layer can be isolated, and scoped hit::marquee traverses its children without checking template status. select.inside checks only bounds, and select.set accepts the resulting IDs. The enclosed Group Selection marquee can therefore select template-layer art.

Use is_selectable here and add a scoped enclosed-marquee regression test.

… template or locked

Targeting an empty layer selects no objects, so Layer Options that made
it a template or locked it found nothing to deselect and left the
target in place. Appearance and transparency edits then still acted on
a layer that layer.target refuses. The target is now cleared whenever
it can't be selected, with or without selected art.

Filter shaper.scribble candidates with is_selectable.

The reachable shaper.scribble path filters supplied IDs with is_editable, so artwork on an unlocked template layer can remain a scribble candidate and be selected or isolated. Use is_selectable here. This is separate from the Group Selection marquee path.
