Description
Situation Description & Motivation
Objective
This epic aims to update Malaria case surveillance in SORMAS for Luxembourg specific. The updating would be in case management, laboratory notifications, epidemiological investigations, and ECDC/WHO reporting.
Background
Malaria is a significant global health concern caused by Plasmodium parasites which are transmitted by Anopheles mosquitoes. The disease predominantly affects tropical and subtropical regions, with sub-Saharan Africa bearing the highest burden. It is a major contributor to morbidity and mortality, especially among children and pregnant women in endemic areas.
Exposed population
Most malaria cases and deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa, significant cases are also reported in South-East Asia, the Eastern Mediterranean, the Western Pacific, and the Americas. The distribution and intensity of transmission are influenced by factors such as climate conditions, vector ecology, and socioeconomic factors.
In Western Europe, malaria is primarily a concern due to imported cases from travelers and immigrants from endemic regions.
While most infections are symptomatic, malaria can also occur without noticeable symptoms, particularly in individuals previously exposed in endemic areas.
Luxembourg case
In Luxembourg, malaria notification is a mandatory disease, with most cases reported by laboratories. The national surveillance system, similar to those in other European countries, ensures timely detection and investigation of cases
High-Level Explanation
- Case Tabulation: Info popup would be updated with ECDC case definition.
- Case Person: Luxembourg standard changes and Occupation List is updated with Work in an airport
- Symptom Tabulation: Update the symptoms for Malaria specific(e.g., fever, fatigue, headache and so on)
- Epidemiological Tabulation: Update the Malaria specific (Travel, Blood Transfusion Receipt, Bone marrow transplant receipt) activities.
- Sample list: The sample list will be reduced to Malaria specific Blood, Serum, Plasma and others.
- Pathogen tests: The pathogen tests will be reduced to Malaria specific(e.g., Thick and thin blood smear, RDT, PCR, LAMP and ELISA).
