security(kb): the canonical search and multi-source routes filter results by the caller's access (#16665) [1/3] - #16691
Conversation
… caller's access (#16665, #16654) api/knowledge_search.py's canonical search endpoint never applied ownership/visibility filtering -- any signed-in caller could read another user's PRIVATE fact through it. Threads user_id/user_org_id/ user_group_ids/is_admin from the route's current_user through all three search paths (RAG, aistack/advanced, basic+reranking) down to the three call sites that actually fetch raw results from the KB (_execute_kb_search, _search_with_all_queries, _aistack_search's three branches), applying knowledge.search_filters.filter_search_results_by_permission before any result reaches the caller. Per the owner's decision on #16654: this is an explicit read API, so an admin (is_admin_role(current_user.get("role"))) reads any fact, same as knowledge_ownership.py/knowledge_collaboration.py's existing correct callers. Test (real KnowledgeOwnership.check_access, not mocked, so it proves the route's wiring and not just that a mock was called): - user A's PRIVATE fact is not returned to user B - is returned to A - is returned to an admin via an explicit read Extracted the three analytics endpoints (search_analytics, record_click, expand_query -- none of which ever return KB facts) into their own api/knowledge_search_analytics.py: the added filtering code pushed knowledge_search.py past its grandfathered file-size ceiling (#14236, 851 lines), and that exemption freezes the size it was granted for rather than licensing more. Registered the new router in core_routers.py under the same /knowledge_base prefix, so every route keeps its existing URL. Lowered the grandfather ceiling to the file's new real size (820), since the ratchet only turns down. Shrinks 3 entries from repo_tests/kb_read_visibility_allowlist.py (_aistack_search, _execute_kb_search, _search_with_all_queries), MAX_ALLOWLISTED 84 -> 81. Refs #16665, #16654

…ults by the caller's access (#16665, #16654) api/knowledge_search_aggregator.py's /multi-source/search, /context and /graph routes never applied ownership/visibility filtering. Threads user_id/user_org_id/user_group_ids/is_admin from each route's current_user through to every call site that fetches raw facts or relation content from the KB: - _search_facts, _get_facts_for_graph: filter_search_results_by_permission on the raw fact list (get_facts_in_category's flat fact dicts are wrapped with a "metadata" view first, since that shape differs from kb.search()'s already-nested results). - _expand_fact_relations, _process_relations_for_citations: a related fact reached via the relation graph (target_fact/source_fact) is a KB fact like any other -- filtered per-item via the new _related_fact_is_accessible helper, since a relation is not an access grant. - get_llm_context: filters the fact-search results feeding the LLM prompt itself, not just the display list. - _get_fact_relations_for_graph: not touched -- reclassified in the allowlist as SCOPED rather than removed. It receives fact_ids already filtered by _get_facts_for_graph, both ends of every returned edge are re-checked against that same set, and include_fact_details=False means it never fetches fact content -- safe by construction, not by an active check. Extracted the documentation-search subsystem (indexed AutoBot docs, not KB facts -- no visibility concern) into a new api/knowledge_search_documentation.py: the added filtering code pushed this file past its grandfathered ceiling (#14236, 967 lines). Registered the new router in core_routers.py under the same /knowledge_base prefix -- every URL unchanged. Lowered the ceiling to the file's new real size (937), since the ratchet only turns down. Updated the 3 existing tests in knowledge_search_aggregator_test.py that called the modified functions directly with placeholder user_id/is_admin values (empty kb.search() results, nothing for the filter to act on). New test (knowledge_search_aggregator_visibility_16665_test.py, real KnowledgeOwnership.check_access, not mocked) covers the /search route: user A's PRIVATE fact hidden from user B, visible to an explicit admin read. Shrinks 5 entries from repo_tests/kb_read_visibility_allowlist.py (_expand_fact_relations, _get_facts_for_graph, _process_relations_for_citations, _search_facts, get_llm_context) and reclassifies 1 (_get_fact_relations_for_graph, _T3 -> SCOPED), MAX_ALLOWLISTED 81 -> 76. Refs #16665, #16654
… routers (#16665) Both api/knowledge_search_analytics.py and api/knowledge_search_documentation.py imported KnowledgeDocumentationSearchResponse/KnowledgeDocumentationStatsResponse/ RecordClickResponse/ExpandQueryResponse/SearchAnalyticsResponse from knowledge.schemas, a different, unrelated package (knowledge/schemas/, which exports things like KnowledgeSearchResponse) -- these classes actually live in api/schemas_knowledge.py, matching the original knowledge_search_aggregator.py import this code was extracted from. Broke module import entirely (core_routers.py imports both routers directly, so this would have failed app startup), caught by the pre-push hook's own pytest collection failing on knowledge_search_aggregator_test.py rather than by me tracing it manually -- CI is still the authority here, this is the fix it asked for.
…act metadata before filtering (#16665) Two real bugs from the code-reviewer pass on #16691, both confirmed against source (and the import one against this PR's own CI): 1. knowledge_search_analytics.py's schema import went the wrong direction in the earlier "fix" commit -- SearchAnalyticsResponse/ RecordClickResponse/ExpandQueryResponse actually live in knowledge.schemas (matching knowledge_search.py's own still-correct KnowledgeSearchResponse import), not api.schemas_knowledge. CI's autofix-types job confirmed: "cannot import name 'ExpandQueryResponse' from 'api.schemas_knowledge'". 2. _get_facts_for_graph's category-filter branch and _related_fact_is_accessible wrapped the raw Redis fact hash's "metadata" field directly as the dict filter_search_results_by_permission checks -- but knowledge/facts.py writes that field as json.dumps(metadata), a STRING, not a dict. check_access() read owner_id=None off the un-decoded string every time, defaulting every fact to PRIVATE-with-no-owner-match and denying it to everyone, including the fact's own owner (fail-closed, not a leak, but a silent functional regression on /multi-source/graph's category filter and every relation-graph fact). Added _decode_fact_metadata to parse the field properly, matching how api/knowledge_ownership.py's already-correct kb.get_fact() path handles the same shape. New regression tests exercise both previously-untested paths directly: _decode_fact_metadata's own JSON parsing, and _get_facts_for_graph with a real category_filter proving the owner sees their own fact again. Lowered knowledge_search_aggregator.py's file-size ceiling to its final real size (951) rather than the earlier intermediate value (937) set before this fix's lines were added -- still well under the original grandfathered 967, and the ratchet's invariant is against what's merged on main, not against an unmerged PR's own intermediate commits.

Initialise query before the import.
If knowledge.search_quality raises ImportError, execution enters this handler before Line 127 assigns query. Evaluating [query] then raises UnboundLocalError, so the endpoint returns an error instead of its documented unavailable fallback.

Enforce research quarantine in every named retrieval path.
_execute_kb_search, _search_with_all_queries, and both direct branches in _aistack_search call the knowledge base without RESEARCH_QUARANTINE_FILTER. The basic and RAG paths inherit this gap. The category graph branch separately reads Redis facts through get_facts_in_category, which also has no quarantine exclusion. Apply the filter before permission filtering or RAG synthesis, and add equivalent collection exclusion before category facts enter graph construction. Keep the existing filters in _search_facts, get_llm_context, and non-category graph retrieval.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Filter each query result before content deduplication.
_search_with_all_queries records content in seen_content before filter_search_results_by_permission runs. If an inaccessible result precedes an accessible result with the same content, the accessible result is discarded and the final filter removes the inaccessible result. The reachable _rag_search path can therefore lose an accessible document or return no result for that content. This is a narrow result-loss edge case, not an authorisation bypass.
Apply permission filtering to each query_results list before updating seen_content.

Security review at bd54234: approve. _get_fact_relations_for_graph SCOPED reclassification — verified the ID-scoping is correct by construction: `fact_ids` passed in comes only from `_process_facts_into_nodes(facts, ...)`, where `facts` is already permission-filtered by `_get_facts_for_graph` via `filter_search_results_by_permission`. The relation lookup then checks both ends — the loop only iterates `fact_ids` (source already visible) and drops any edge whose `target_id not in fact_ids` (target must also be in the visible set) — combined with `include_fact_details=False`, no fact outside the caller's visible set is exposed, not even its existence via an edge. get_facts_in_category flat-fact wrapping — `_decode_fact_metadata` fixes a real bug: `get_facts_in_category`'s facts carry metadata as a JSON string (unlike `kb.search()`'s pre-decoded results); previously this silently produced `owner_id=None` for every fact, over-denying even the owner. Fixed with a safe fail-closed decode (bad JSON / non-dict → `{}`, which denies rather than grants). Per-item relation filtering — `_related_fact_is_accessible` applies the same `filter_search_results_by_permission` check to facts reached via the relation graph, not just direct search hits ("a relation is not an access grant"). Correct. Also traced every return path in `knowledge_search.py`'s `search()`/`_aistack_search`/`_rag_search`/`_execute_kb_search` — all now funnel through `filter_search_results_by_permission` before returning, including both the VectorSearchEngine and legacy-fallback branches (previously two separate early returns, now unified so a future path can't be added without the filter). The two size-ceiling extractions (`knowledge_search_analytics.py`, `knowledge_search_documentation.py`) are pure moves — the docstring itself states, and the code confirms, that those routes never return KB facts (search-quality metrics / product-doc search), so no visibility concern there. `filter_search_results_by_permission` itself is unmodified by this PR (already fail-closed from #16669). CI: no FAILURE/ERROR/TIMED_OUT checks. Mergeable. |
…t clear (#16665) repo_tests/kb_read_visibility_guard_test.py's static scan marks a KB read "filtered" only if one of the 6 recognized filter-helper names is called directly within the SAME function body (ast.walk(child), where child is that function's own subtree -- a call into a locally-defined helper one level down is invisible to it). _expand_fact_relations and _process_relations_for_citations both filter every related fact via _related_fact_is_accessible, which itself calls filter_search_results_by_permission -- genuinely filtered, but through exactly that one level of indirection the scan doesn't see. Both were removed from the allowlist in the original fix commit on the (incorrect) assumption that adding the filtering call was sufficient to clear the guard; CI's python-suite shard 4/12 caught the gap. MAX_ALLOWLISTED: 76 -> 78 (two entries restored). Still 84 -> 78 against main, where nothing in #16665 has landed yet -- the "never rises" ratchet tracks merged main, not this PR's own intermediate commits.
|
Delta review at a4ffd53 (from bd54234): approve. Verified both restored functions genuinely filter every relation on every path, not just the added-then-forgotten-allowlist-entry claim:
Both correctly reuse `_related_fact_is_accessible`, already verified in my first pass on this PR. Agree with the guard-limitation diagnosis: it's a genuine single-hop-AST blind spot (checks for a filter-helper call in the same function body, not one level of indirection down), not a case where the code stopped filtering. CI: no FAILURE/ERROR/TIMED_OUT checks. Mergeable. |
… can't clear (#16665) repo_tests/kb_read_visibility_guard_test.py's static scan only recognizes a KB read as filtered when one of 6 exact helper names (filter_search_results_by_permission, check_access, etc.) is called directly in the same function body. _get_or_compute_category_counts (now api/knowledge_category_counts.py) filters via _visible_to_every_authenticated_user -- a deliberately caller-independent predicate, not one of those 6, since the cached count is shared by every caller and a per-caller check_access() would give a different answer per caller and break that shared cache. The guard's scan can't tell "filters, just not with a recognized name" from "doesn't filter," so it still flags the read; #16691 hit the identical pattern in its own two functions. Restored the allowlist entry with the reasoning above. MAX_ALLOWLISTED: 83 -> 84 (matches origin/main's current value -- the earlier removal was premature; against merged main this PR still nets zero real gap-closures for the guard's own detector, though the fix itself is real and tested).
Thinking Path
T3 of #16654 (PR 1 of 3 -- see "Single-issue rationale" below): the search and RAG routes never applied ownership/visibility filtering, so a PRIVATE or SYSTEM fact was returned to any signed-in caller who could reach those paths. #16674's guard (
repo_tests/kb_read_visibility_allowlist.py) enumerates every unfiltered KB read call site precisely -- 34 entries taggedTRACKED_GAP #16665across 15 files, a larger and more precise scope than #16665's own issue text (which names ~11 top-level routes; many of the 34 are the inner helper functions beneath those routes that actually touch the KB).This PR covers the two canonical search entry points --
api/knowledge_search.py(POST /search) andapi/knowledge_search_aggregator.py(/multi-source/search,/context,/graph) -- plus two file extractions the added filtering code required. Remaining files split into two further PRs (CRUD-ish routes; AI/RAG/MCP/lifecycle), per the owner's guidance once this PR's own diff proved large enough to be "a full security review by itself."Per the owner's decision on #16654 (2026-09-13): explicit read APIs let an admin read any fact.
What Changed
api/knowledge_search.py-- threadeduser_id/user_org_id/user_group_ids/is_adminthrough all three search paths (RAG, aistack/advanced, basic+reranking) down to the three raw-KB-read call sites (_execute_kb_search,_search_with_all_queries,_aistack_search's three branches).api/knowledge_search_aggregator.py-- same threading through/search,/context,/graph:_search_facts,_get_facts_for_graph: filtered viafilter_search_results_by_permission.get_facts_in_categoryreturns flat fact dicts (owner_id/visibility at the top level), unlikekb.search()'s already-metadata-nested results -- wrapped as{**fact, "metadata": fact}before filtering so both shapes work through the one helper._expand_fact_relations,_process_relations_for_citations: a related fact reached via the relation graph (target_fact/source_fact) is a KB fact like any other. Filtered per-item via a new_related_fact_is_accessiblehelper (wraps the flat_get_fact_content-shaped dict the same way), since a relation is not an access grant.get_llm_context: filters the fact-search results feeding the LLM prompt itself, not just a display list._get_fact_relations_for_graph: not modified. Reclassified in the allowlist fromTRACKED_GAP #16665toSCOPED, with the reasoning recorded inline: it receivesfact_idsalready filtered by_get_facts_for_graph's output (both functions share the one caller,get_multi_source_graph); it re-checks both ends of every returned edge against that samefact_idsset (if target_id not in fact_ids: continue); and it callskb.get_fact_relations(..., include_fact_details=False), so no fact content is ever fetched here -- onlyfrom/to/type/strength. Safe by construction (bounded to an already-vetted ID set), not by an active per-call check. The guard trusts this judgement going forward; flagging clearly so it's checked, not just accepted.Extractions (both pushed the touched file past its grandfathered file-size ceiling, #14236 -- the exemption freezes the size it was granted for, not a license for more):
api/knowledge_search_analytics.py: the 3 analytics endpoints fromknowledge_search.py(search_analytics,record_click,expand_query-- none return KB facts).api/knowledge_search_documentation.py: the documentation-search subsystem fromknowledge_search_aggregator.py(indexed AutoBot docs, not KB facts -- no visibility concern).core_routers.pyunder their original/knowledge_baseprefix, so every URL is unchanged.Self-caught bug: both new router files initially imported their response-schema classes from
knowledge.schemas(a different, unrelated package) instead ofapi.schemas_knowledge-- would have broken app startup, sincecore_routers.pyimports both directly. Caught by the pre-push hook's own pytest collection failing, not by manual tracing; fixed in a follow-up commit before this PR left draft.Shrinks 8 entries from
repo_tests/kb_read_visibility_allowlist.py(_aistack_search,_execute_kb_search,_search_with_all_queries,_expand_fact_relations,_get_facts_for_graph,_process_relations_for_citations,_search_facts,get_llm_context) and reclassifies 1 (_get_fact_relations_for_graph,_T3->SCOPED).MAX_ALLOWLISTED84 -> 76.Verification
knowledge_search_visibility_16665_test.py,knowledge_search_aggregator_visibility_16665_test.py) drive the real route functions with a realKnowledgeOwnership.check_access(not mocked), proving the routes' actual wiring:knowledge_search_aggregator_test.pythat called the modified functions directly, with placeholderuser_id/is_adminvalues (theirkb.search()mocks return empty results, so nothing for the filter to act on -- they still verify the quarantine-filter behavior they were written for).Risks
Low-to-moderate: the diff is one mechanical pattern (thread four params, filter before return) applied at most call sites, but the aggregator's relation-graph functions needed real judgement (the flat-vs-nested shape mismatch, and the SCOPED reclassification) rather than pure mechanics -- both are called out explicitly above for review rather than buried in the diff.

Single-issue rationale
T3 is one sub-issue of the #16654 umbrella; #16665's own scope (34 call sites across 15 files) is large enough that the owner asked for a three-way split once this PR's own diff (2 files + 2 extractions) proved to be "a full security review by itself": this PR (search + aggregator), a CRUD-routes PR, and an AI/RAG/MCP/lifecycle PR. All three
Refs #16665; the last landsCloses #16665once every AC is met with evidence.Changelog fragment
