Problem

Copy to machine clones the wrong repository for forks. If the source checkout has an upstream remote, the copy ends up on the upstream repo instead of the fork:

  • The resolver builds the identity (canonicalKey and locator.remoteUrl) from upstream.
  • The dialog clones locator.remoteUrl.

The source project groups under its fork via origin.canonicalKey. The copy's origin is the upstream repo, so it groups under the upstream key. The sidebar then shows the same project twice.

Repro:

  1. Use a fork checkout with origin set to the fork and upstream set to the parent.
  2. Copy to machine onto another environment.
  3. The new checkout's origin is the parent repo, and the project appears twice in the sidebar.

Illustration (mockup, made-up project names): the same fork shows up twice before, and once after.

before and after

Change

  • RepositoryOrigin gets an optional remoteUrl, which the resolver fills with the origin remote it already reads.
  • The dialog clones origin.remoteUrl when present, so a fork copies the fork, the same repo the sidebar groups by.
  • It falls back to locator.remoteUrl, so older servers behave as before.

Scope and approval

This is a small, focused fix with no prior issue: copy to machine should reproduce the source checkout, and today it duplicates the sidebar project for every fork. No exposure is added, since locator.remoteUrl already carries raw remote URLs to the client.

Verification

  • vp test run src/project/RepositoryIdentityResolver.test.ts (apps/server): 17/17 pass. The existing fork test now asserts origin.remoteUrl.
  • tsc-rs --noEmit in packages/contracts, apps/server, apps/web: clean.
  • vp lint and vp fmt --check on the changed files: clean.
  • Manual check on two machines: a fork copied to a second machine appeared as two sidebar projects. With the copy's origin pointing at the fork, which is the URL this change clones, they group as one.

Not run: a browser test of the dialog itself.

A project whose checkout has an upstream remote resolves its repository
identity from upstream, so copy to machine cloned upstream. The copy's
origin then differed from the source's and the sidebar showed two
projects. Carry the origin remote URL in the identity and clone it.

📝 Walkthrough

Repository origin data now includes its remote URL. The project dialog uses that URL as its preferred clone source, with the locator URL as a fallback.

Changes: Repository origin remote URL

Layer / File(s) Summary
Expose origin remote URL
packages/contracts/src/environment.ts, apps/server/src/project/RepositoryIdentityResolver.ts, apps/server/src/project/RepositoryIdentityResolver.test.ts
RepositoryOrigin accepts an optional trimmed, non-empty remoteUrl. The resolver includes the origin URL in its result, and the fork-origin test checks that value.
Select clone source URL
apps/web/src/components/AddProjectToMachineDialog.tsx
The dialog prefers the origin remote URL, falls back to the locator remote URL, and uses an empty string if neither is available.

Change: Bug fix

Suggested reviewers: t3dotgg

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 60ddb

Copy to machine now clones the fork's origin URL instead of the upstream. However, when the origin remote has an embedded token or password, that secret is now included in repository data sent to the web client. It is also forwarded to the target machine. Strip credentials from the exposed URL before merging, or explicitly accept this behavior.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 60ddb

The fix selects the fork correctly, but also carries its raw origin URL into project metadata and the copy workflow. If that URL contains an access token, the token can be displayed to project readers and forwarded to another machine. Existing clone-progress redaction does not protect these earlier steps.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Credential-bearing fork origins can newly cross metadata and machine boundaries. When upstream is credential-free but a distinct origin embeds a token, the resolver now publishes that raw origin URL, the dialog displays it, and the default same-protocol clone forwards it to the selected target. Existing exposure of locator.remoteUrl does not cover this distinct-origin case. Clone-progress redaction occurs after the client has already received and forwarded the secret.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The conditional exposure reaches authenticated shell-metadata readers for affected projects and the machine explicitly selected for copying. A reader need not control the Git configuration to receive a credential already embedded there. Any downstream repository-service authority depends on that credential's actual privileges, which were not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The supported conditional path is a credential-bearing origin in local Git configuration, followed by raw identity disclosure, dialog rendering and target cloning. Git receives the original URL, so credentials can also persist in the target remote configuration. This is an incremental risk when the previously exposed upstream URL did not contain that credential; persistence follows the Git invocation rather than an observed runtime reproduction.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — WebSocket authentication and RPC scopes protect metadata access, and target selection checks clone authority. The clone service removes userinfo and query values from snapshot URLs and redacts URL credentials in user-facing Git errors. Those controls do not redact the repository identity or dialog display, and intentionally leave the Git input unchanged.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The existing clone lifecycle claims project and destination identity before launch, records success, failure and interruption, and avoids deleting completed checkouts on late cancellation. Cancel, retry and discard invoke partial-clone cleanup. Failure alone does not immediately discard the partial checkout, so cleanup is not a guarantee against retention of a newly forwarded credential.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Separate credential-free repository metadata and clone location from authentication material. Sanitize the origin URL before serialization and display, and use target-local authentication or a separately authorized secret-transfer mechanism when cloning requires credentials. Add a regression case with a clean upstream and credential-bearing fork origin.
