With the Git sheet open, the mobile app asked the server for Git status about five times a second until the sheet closed. GitOverviewSheet refreshed status in an effect that depended on the whole useSelectedThreadGitActions() result. Each refresh invalidated refs, and the new listRefs data re-rendered the hook with a new object. That re-ran the effect and started another refresh.

The fix removes that effect. useSelectedThreadGitActions already refreshes once on mount and whenever the selected thread or cwd changes, using primitive keys and useEffectEvent, so opening the sheet still refreshes once. The header refresh button, pull-to-refresh and the Android menu refresh are unchanged.

Release measurement

Setup: iPhone 17 Pro on the iOS 27 simulator, Release native executable (UUID D0C2BDE9-D7DA-3283-9891-83622F94DC12), Hermes -O, dev=false, no Metro. The flow opened a thread, opened the Git sheet, tapped More, and left the sheet idle. Counts come from server RPC trace spans, in a 22 s window that starts at the first refreshStatus.

  • Before: bundle 251e775e…, built from parent 6e13d8f.
  • After: bundle aecb74d8…, built from 6e13d8f plus this diff (source patch sha256 9be09f44…). The source map's sourcesContent matches this commit for GitOverviewSheet.tsx and the unchanged hook.
Idle open sheet, 22 s window Before After
vcs.refreshStatus requests 113 1
vcs.listRefs requests 112 1
Server time in refreshStatus 20.6 s 0.16 s

Before, a new refreshStatus started every 181–240 ms (median 193 ms). After, the only requests were one refreshStatus and one listRefs when the sheet opened, with none in the next 24.7 s. The sheet still showed the branch and current status after the change.

Limits: These numbers come from one before run and one after run on a simulator. Neither run measured client CPU, battery or latency, so this PR claims no percentage improvement. A separate bug is not fixed here: Git status can stay stale after reconnecting until something refreshes it.

Evidence: evidence.json has the aggregate counts, request intervals, bundle hashes and method. Only RPC method names, offsets and durations are published. Raw traces, source maps and bundles are not.

Verification

Mobile typecheck and targeted lint pass. This deletes one effect, so there is no unit test; the native release trace above is the direct proof.

Surfaces: only the mobile Git sheet changes behavior, on iOS and Android, which share this code. Web, desktop, server, providers and contracts are unchanged. Unrelated local widget edits are excluded.

Julius requested one PR per measured issue in this maintainer mobile performance audit.

Implementation and PR preparation: Claude Opus 5.5 through T3 Code. Release runtime verification: Codex harness.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at d0807ed

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This focused bug fix removes a redundant Git status refresh trigger responsible for the mobile sheet loop while preserving selection-based, pull-to-refresh, and explicit refresh behavior. It is limited to one component with no schema, infrastructure, security, or static-analysis implications.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Refresh Git status when the session reconnects.

When a long app resume replaces the session, the reattached status stream emits a cached snapshot. In the base, that update rerendered the sheet, recreated gitActions, and ran its [gitActions] effect, which issued a quiet refresh. After this removal, unchanged selection and cwd do not trigger the selection effect, so cached remote status can remain visible until the next poll or manual refresh. Trigger a quiet refresh when the status subscription resumes after session replacement.

Confirmed the reconnect freshness concern in the release simulator. The idle refresh loop is removed, but reconnect freshness remains unresolved and is being worked on in the next stack layer. A first attempt now issues a refresh on reconnect, yet the Git popover still shows cached status; that failed integrated check is being investigated before publication. I am not marking this finding resolved or this PR fully ready until the correction is verified, including resume with the sheet already open.

The docstring-coverage warning does not warrant a code change: this diff deletes a redundant effect, and adding a component docstring merely to meet a percentage would conflict with the repository’s documentation guidance.

Re CodeRabbit's outside-diff note on GitOverviewSheet.tsx:118 (refresh on reconnect): that's a real gap, but it's out of scope for this PR. In the base, the reconnect refresh only happened as a side effect of the loop this PR removes, which re-ran refreshStatus about every 190ms while the sheet was open. Reconnect freshness is being fixed separately in the next stacked change. That change keys the existing primitive-keyed selection refresh on the environment connection state. It also fixes the iOS thread header so the Git popover picks up status updates instead of keeping a stale snapshot. Leaving this PR as a single-purpose loop fix.

Follow-up on CodeRabbit's outside-diff note about refreshing Git status on reconnect (GitOverviewSheet.tsx:118). The correction is in the next stack layer, #16329, not in this PR. On its own, this PR still has the known freshness gap after a long background.

#16329 keys the quiet selection refresh on the environment being connected, so each reconnect sends one vcs.refreshStatus per mounted hook consumer. I verified it in a release simulator. With the More sheet left open across a long background, resuming produced two refreshes (one from the thread route, one from the sheet), and the open sheet updated to 1 file changed. The iOS header Git menu had a separate stale-label bug, fixed in #16330.

This finding was posted in the review summary as an outside-diff comment, so there is no inline thread to resolve.

GitOverviewSheet refreshed Git status in an effect keyed on the whole
useSelectedThreadGitActions result. Each refresh invalidated refs, the
listRefs result re-rendered the hook with a new object, and the effect
fired again, so an idle open sheet issued refreshStatus + listRefs about
five times a second. useSelectedThreadGitActions already refreshes on
mount and on thread/cwd changes, so the sheet effect is removed.
