Summary

ocx restart on the update path (a newer CLI replacing a standalone proxy) refused whenever a service install record existed, even when no supervisor ran it. A typical case is a launchd plist that is installed but not loaded. This PR carries the remaining restart-admission half of #6649 and implements the precondition from the maintainer triage on that PR: before the installed-service refusal is relaxed, a full service-record fingerprint must be captured and revalidated through stop and replacement admission.

  • Admission. On macOS and Linux, a present service record whose ownership is none no longer blocks the update restart, provided a bounded supervisor probe reports inactive. Ownership claims, unreadable or unknown state, running or unknown supervisors, foreground parents, client/sibling roles, fenced trees, and Windows still refuse exactly as before.
  • Fingerprint (src/cli/update-restart-service-record.ts). Every service-state candidate (authority and mirrors, including absent ones) and the applicable launchd plist or systemd unit are captured. Each file is read without following symlinks, with the descriptor type and identity checked before a bounded read of at most 1 MiB. The digest covers SHA-256 of the bytes plus dev, ino, size, mtimeNs, ctimeNs, mode, and owner. Service state and ownership derive from those same bytes.
  • Revalidation. assertUpdateRestartHome recaptures the fingerprint and reprobes supervision. runUpdateRestart already calls it at the initial and beforeStop revalidation, after shutdown, immediately before spawn, on every replacement-observation iteration, and before reporting success; runUpdateRestart itself is unchanged. The child receives only the digest (schema 1, 64-character hex) and rechecks it before and under its own lease, and in its existing bind and publication checks. Any drift is terminal: there is no recapture and no second spawn.
  • Supervision (src/cli/update-restart-supervision.ts). launchd checks both domains, and systemd requires inactive plus MainPID=0. Both run with the remaining deadline from trusted absolute manager paths, and each probe receives explicit SSH user-bus environment discovery. The retained PID-bound manager check uses the same bounded runners. An empty XDG_RUNTIME_DIR now counts as absent in isSystemd().
  • Roadmap. Adds devlog/_plan/261009_L2-service-journal/, which plans this unit and two related service/config units that will land in separate pull requests.

The journal half of #6649 already landed through #6686, so it is not part of this PR.

Interaction with the Desktop-sidecar authority work (#6802 and its follow-up): that lane plans a Desktop veto inside runUpdateRestart's revalidation. This PR adds no lines there; the only shared hunk is the deps object in restartFromCurrentInstallation. Whichever lands second adds a combined regression (inactive service record plus same-PID Desktop supervision appearing before the final stop leads to zero stop POSTs and zero spawns) and reconciles the shared structure paragraphs.

Verification

  • Focused files via bun scripts/test.ts: tests/cli/cli-update-restart{,-home,-child,-transport,-admission,-service-record,-supervision}.test.ts, tests/cli/system-restart-client.test.ts, tests/windows/windows-deploy-close-regressions.test.ts, plus the layout, layout-tooling, and file-size ratchet tests. 175 pass / 0 fail at the rebased head.
  • bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, and bun run privacy:scan all pass.
  • The new tests trigger each guard: same-revision provenance change, identical-byte replacement, restored-mtime edit, mirror/authority changes, symlinked, oversized, or swapped-descriptor records, a forged systemctl on PATH, active/unknown/timeout supervision at each checkpoint with phase-specific assertions (zero stop POSTs before stop, zero spawns after settlement), malformed child markers, and the SSH user-bus case.
  • The full local suite was not run (the lane runs only focused tests while several worktrees compete for resources). The full platform matrix is left to hosted CI on this head.
  • Independent review: a gpt-6.1-sol code and security review over three rounds. Five findings were fixed, and the final verdict is PASS.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed. (structure/ops/service-and-sidecars.md, structure/runtime.md, docs-site/.../reference/cli/lifecycle.md)
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults. (The admission guard was reviewed as an ownership boundary, every probe failure fails closed, and Windows is unchanged.)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • CLI updates now verify that service records and supervision status remain unchanged and positively inactive before and during restart. Installed services are eligible only when they have no ownership claim; updates are refused when supervision is active or uncertain, the platform is unsupported, or service details change.
    • Restart checks are time-bounded, and service configuration is revalidated before the replacement starts. Desktop-supervised services are not replaced.
    • Prompt-lock handling now treats a removed or replaced claims directory as an unsuccessful claim rather than allowing certain filesystem errors to interrupt the operation.
  • Documentation

    • Added guidance on eligibility checks and safeguards for guarded CLI update restarts.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The CLI update-restart path now admits eligible unclaimed service records when supervision is positively inactive. It fingerprints service records, bounds supervision probes by the transaction deadline, and rechecks admission evidence through parent and child checkpoints. The PR also adds prompt-lock handling, tests, documentation, and planning documents for related carry work.

Changes

Guarded update-restart admission

Layer / File(s) Summary
Service-record and supervision evidence
src/cli/update-restart-service-record.ts, src/cli/update-restart-supervision.ts, src/service/systemd.ts, tests/cli/cli-update-restart-service-record.test.ts, tests/cli/cli-update-restart-supervision.test.ts, tests/windows/windows-deploy-close-regressions.test.ts
The new helpers fingerprint service-state candidates and platform definitions, and probe launchd or systemd with trusted executables and bounded commands. Tests cover record drift, probe results, and systemd user-bus environment handling.
Parent admission and rechecks
src/cli/update-restart-home.ts, src/cli/update-restart.ts, tests/cli/cli-update-restart-admission.test.ts, tests/cli/cli-update-restart-home.test.ts, tests/cli/cli-update-restart-desktop-service.test.ts, tests/cli/cli-update-restart.test.ts, tests/cli/system-restart-client.test.ts, scripts/test-layout/layout.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json
Parent admission captures and rechecks home evidence, checks supervision and manager state, and uses a deadline. Tests cover eligible records, refusals, provenance drift, desktop-service changes, and deadline expiry.
Child validation and published contract
src/cli/update-restart-child.ts, tests/cli/cli-update-restart-admission.test.ts, tests/cli/cli-update-restart-child.test.ts, docs-site/src/content/docs/reference/cli/lifecycle.md, structure/ops/service-and-sidecars.md, structure/runtime.md
The child validates the marker’s service-record digest and checks home, supervision, and deadline conditions. Tests and documentation describe admission and refusal conditions.

Prompt-lock claim handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Claim-directory replacement and contention test
src/codex/prompt-lock-claim.ts, tests/codex-integration/codex-prompt-lock.test.ts
The claim handler treats EINVAL as contention only when the claims directory is gone or replaced. The concurrent-contender test extends the child hold period, uses a separate acquisition hang guard, and increases its timeout.

The remaining concerns are localized: lock errors may be reported as contention, a test may delay diagnosing a signaled child, and the roadmap retains superseded absent-root wording. They warrant owner awareness but do not indicate a broad production failure.

2. **Existing-root validation — FIX.** The config dir must `lstat` as a real directory. A file, a symlink or junction that does not resolve to a directory, or EACCES refuses.
3. **D5 contradiction — RESOLVED as admission with a documented limit.** For `source: "standalone"` where the selected executable is exactly `process.execPath` (`bun-runtime.ts:169-170`), the create/remove probe runs in-process; the running process is the selected executable, so the right path policy is exercised. Limitation: there is no child isolation or timeout, and a synchronous filesystem call can block. This is documented in the PR and `structure/runtime.md`. A standalone selection that is not `process.execPath` refuses.
4. **Standalone ownership — corrected.** `standalone` describes executable packaging, not Desktop ownership. The L1 note is now only a coordination reminder.
5. **Acceptance negatives — ADD.** Tests cover an absent root (refuses, no mutation), a non-directory or dangling root, standalone create/remove failure with cleanup, and standalone identity mismatch (refuses). Non-Windows paths make zero filesystem mutations and zero spawns. Existing behavior stays covered: spawn failure, leftover entries, concurrent nonces, and zero probes for healthy or disabled shims.

Align the absent-root criteria with the controlling disposition.

The later code-review disposition controls: the preflight creates an absent config root, and a refused probe leaves that empty root in place. The acceptance negative and reflection item 1 still describe the superseded “refuse with no mutation” behavior. Standalone cleanup is a separate case.

Suggested documentation fix
-- **Superseded wording.** In "Reflection dispositions" below, item 1 (refuse when absent) and the absent-root case in item 5 are superseded by B4 above. Absent roots are created and probed under custody rules.
+- **Superseded wording.** In "Reflection dispositions" below, item 1 and the absent-root case in item 5 are superseded by B4 and the later code-review disposition. An absent root is created and probed; if the probe refuses, the empty root remains.

+5. **Acceptance negatives — ADD.** Tests cover an absent root (the preflight creates it and retains it empty when the probe refuses), a non-directory or dangling root, standalone create/remove failure with cleanup, and standalone identity mismatch (refuses).

Also update reflection item 1 so it no longer says that an absent root is never created.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Clarify that “absent” applies to launchd service labels, not plist files.

The preceding sentence allows an installed but unloaded launchd plist. “Both launchd domains must be absent” can therefore make users think the plist itself must be absent, which conflicts with the supported workflow. The implementation checks that both launchd service labels report absence. Replace “domains” with “service labels” and state the required status.

📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Test the bounded reader without relying on identity drift.

The growth branch rewrites s.definition at tests/cli/cli-update-restart-service-record.test.ts:139. If the total > 1 MiB guard is removed, capture can still reject at src/cli/update-restart-service-record.ts:78-80 because the file identity or captured byte length no longer matches. The test therefore does not isolate the bounded-reader overflow branch.

Test readBoundedRecord directly with the same descriptor and a mocked one-byte read at the limit. This keeps the descriptor identity unchanged and makes the assertion depend on the total > UPDATE_RESTART_SERVICE_RECORD_MAX_BYTES guard.

lidge-jun force-pushed the codex/service-restart-journal-carry branch from d7d9e71 to 48b6d7f Compare October 9, 2026 11:13
Under contention a peer's final directory removal can delete the claims
directory between the identity check and the link into it. Linux reports
ENOENT, which already meant busy; macOS link reports EINVAL, which escaped
tryAcquire and crashed the contender. Treat EINVAL as busy when the claims
directory is gone or replaced. The contenders test now reports a crashed
child's exit and stderr instead of only timing out. Reproduced locally:
3 crashed rounds in 60 before, 0 in 80 after.

Do not treat every lstat failure as proof that the claims directory is gone.

OwnerDeps.lstat uses lstatSync by default, which can fail for permission, I/O, and resource errors. claimDirectoryGone() currently returns true for every failure. If the directory still exists and lstat fails, the EINVAL branch at line 118 can incorrectly report ordinary contention instead of the actual error.

Only treat ENOENT/ENOTDIR, or a changed device/inode, as evidence that the directory is gone.

official Bun 1.4 Bun.spawn ChildProcess exitCode signalCode signal termination documentation

💡 Result:

Bun 1.4’s official docs describe `Bun.spawn()` as returning a **`Subprocess`** (not Node’s `ChildProcess`). The current API reference lists:

- `exitCode`: synchronous exit code, or `null` if the process hasn’t exited.
- `signalCode`: synchronous signal code, or `null` if the process wasn’t terminated by a signal.
- `exited`: a promise that resolves when the process exits.
- `onExit(subprocess, exitCode, signalCode, error?)`: callback invoked on exit, including non-zero exits.
- `kill(signal?)`: sends an exit code or signal to the process. ([bun.sh](https://bun.sh/reference/bun/spawn?utm_source=openai))

So, **check `signalCode` to distinguish signal termination from an ordinary exit**; use `exitCode` for the exit status. The official reference documents these fields, though the page is current documentation rather than a version-pinned Bun 1.4 declaration. Bun’s official 1.4 release announcement is dated August 20, 2026. ([bun.com](https://bun.com/blog/bun-v1.4?utm_source=openai))

Check signalCode when detecting a child exit.

Line 139 checks only exitCode. Bun reports signal termination through signalCode, so a signaled contender can be missed when exitCode is null. The test can then wait for the completion deadline instead of reporting the contender's stderr.

…s launchers (replaces #6695) (#6812)

* fix(service): preflight the selected Bun before baking it into Windows launchers

Under a Windows application-control policy the same Bun bytes can write
the profile from one path and get EPERM from another. A durable launcher
that bakes a denied path crash-loops. Before a Windows service install,
repair, or Codex shim install/refresh changes anything, run the already
selected runtime itself to create and remove a probe entry in the config
directory. On failure refuse with OCX_RUNTIME_PREFLIGHT_FAILED and
guidance (reinstall through a permitted npm global install, or select a
trusted Bun with OPENCODEX_BUN_PATH). No alternate runtime is discovered
or persisted.

An orchestrated install admits the runtime once before the existing
service is stopped and passes that frozen selection to rendering and the
install record. Direct installer calls keep their own admission. The
preflight never deletes the config root. Shim auto-restore defers with
guidance and startup continues. Other platforms are untouched.

* fix(service): explain the probe child's deliberate catch blocks

Co-authored-by: ismell0992-afk <ismell0992@gmail.com>

* test(service): allow the preflight's empty config root during fresh scheduler staging

On Windows the runtime preflight runs before staging and may create the absent config root. It never deletes it and leaves it empty, so ownership initialization still claims it; assert emptiness instead of absence.

Co-authored-by: ismell0992-afk <ismell0992@gmail.com>

* fix(service): claim fresh scheduler ownership before runtime preflight

Admit the frozen runtime after registration and ownership initialization, before preparation, so fresh installs clear cached ownership refusals and denied probes roll back the new registration.

Co-authored-by: ismell0992-afk <ismell0992@gmail.com>

* docs(service): document the fresh scheduler preflight order and the published package name

A first-time scheduler install registers and claims the config root before the runtime check, and a refusal rolls back that registration. The reinstall guidance now names the published @bitkyc08/opencodex package.

Co-authored-by: ismell0992-afk <ismell0992@gmail.com>

* test(service): cover Desktop refusal before runtime admission

Keep repair admission after ownership and auth checks, preserve the admitted runtime through install and repair, and verify Desktop refusal never spawns the runtime probe.

Co-authored-by: ismell0992-afk <ismell0992@gmail.com>

* docs(structure): fit the restart and runtime preflight contracts in the service doc budget

Both the guarded update restart section (#6808) and the Windows selected-runtime
preflight section landed in structure/ops/service-and-sidecars.md. Keep both
contracts and reflow them so the doc stays within the 600-line structure budget.
