Summary

  • Problem: selecting a Codex account or pin through the management API could report success while a newer disk snapshot won the subsequent whole-config reconcile. The next requests then routed and authenticated as a different account. Re-selecting the account that the live config already held was the reproducible case, on 2.77.0, 2.81.0 and dev.
  • Fix: explicit select, pin and clear now go through the existing scoped persisted-config transaction (src/codex/auth-api/account-selection.ts). The target is revalidated against the current disk snapshot (removed, paused, legacy-main and validation-pending targets are refused). The committed selection and its merge baseline are adopted, and only then is routing reset. A rejected write leaves routing untouched, and an exception after publication reconciles to the durable selection. Credential storage and Pool/Direct behavior are unchanged.
  • This carries fix(codex): commit explicit account selections atomically #6813 by @hulkbig onto current dev. The fork PR's runtime CI cannot start without workflow approval, so the carry runs repository CI. Both commits keep their original author, and the content is identical: the carry tree 3d755f0d31 equals git merge-tree --write-tree origin/dev refs/remotes/pr/6813 for dev 37e9294125.

Carries #6813.

Verification

Run locally on this branch's head, with a temporary HOME and the carry checked out:

  • bun test tests/codex-integration/codex-account-selection-atomicity.test.ts tests/codex-integration/codex-auth-api.test.ts tests/config/config-user-edits.test.ts tests/codex-integration/codex-pool-rotation.test.ts: 543 pass, 0 fail.
  • bun test tests/test-layout.test.ts tests/test-layout-tooling.test.ts: 19 pass, 0 fail.
  • bun run typecheck, bun run structure:check, bun run privacy:scan: all passed.
  • The full suite, docs build, and the Windows and macOS shards were not run locally (sweep lane, minimal local scope). Exact-head hosted CI covers them.
  • Independent gpt-6.1-sol security and correctness reviews, given no builder context. Their verdicts are recorded in a comment before merge.
  • The original PR's evidence: a red regression on unmodified 2.77.0 for the same-value selection cases, plus 630 focused, adjacent and layout tests on 91e24b0.

Checklist

  • Scope stays focused and avoids unrelated cleanup.
  • Docs or release notes were updated when needed. Management API reference in five locales, plus structure/config.md and structure/providers/openai-accounts.md.
  • Security-sensitive changes were reviewed for secrets, auth, and unsafe defaults. A separate independent security review is required before merge.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Account selection changes are committed against the latest saved settings, preserving unrelated configuration.
    • Selecting or clearing an account requires an explicit request. Unavailable, paused, removed, or unvalidated accounts are rejected without changing the active selection or routing.
    • Successful responses report the committed selection and may include a reason for releasing an account pin.
    • The API reference documents these behaviors and the account_selection_unavailable conflict response.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The active-account API now validates and persists manual Codex account selections through a coordinated mutation. Confirmed selections update live configuration and routing. Integration tests and API references cover request validation, persistence outcomes, and selection behavior.

Changes

Codex account selection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Request validation and persisted selection
src/codex/auth-api/routes.ts, src/codex/auth-api/account-selection.ts, docs-site/src/content/docs/*/reference/management-api.md
The route validates that requests include a string or null accountId, then delegates selection. The persistence handler validates targets and configuration, commits under lock, and reports unavailable mutations or unconfirmed writes. The API references describe selection and clearing semantics, conflict responses, and successful responses.
Adopt confirmed selection
src/codex/auth-api/account-selection.ts, src/config/live-reconcile.ts, src/config/rebase-provenance.ts, structure/config.md, structure/providers/openai-accounts.md
After confirmation, the handler adopts persisted active and pinned values, records the config path, and resets routing. Live reconciliation updates the config and its merge baseline, while deletion-intent handling clears only the consumed selection fields. The architecture notes describe this behavior.
Verify selection outcomes
tests/codex-integration/codex-account-selection-atomicity.test.ts, scripts/test-layout/layout.json, tests/fixtures/test-layout-expected.json
The integration suite checks successful selection and clearing, target and persistence rejection cases, routing state, and preservation of unrelated configuration. Both test-layout mappings include the suite.

Clearing selection can steer one subsequent unbound round-robin request to the main account rather than leaving account choice automatic; this bounded routing inconsistency should be fixed or explicitly accepted.

CodeRabbit review on #6824: the injected post-publication failure tests
start from a seeded config, so the missing-config initializer path was not
covered. A failure there must still report the published selection with
config_bookkeeping_failed and route to the selected credential.

🟡 Minor · Use a non-manual reset when clearing selection. · account-selection.ts:95-99

src/codex/auth-api/account-selection.ts:95-99
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Use a non-manual reset when clearing selection.

A PUT with accountId: null passes __main__ to resetCodexRoutingForManualSelection. That helper records a manual preference and seeds the shared pool. seedPoolRotationAccount forces the next sticky or round-robin pick to that account. Therefore, with round-robin enabled and multiple eligible accounts, the next unbound request can be routed to __main__ once.

The clear test defines the opposite behavior: clearing means automatic selection. Keep the reset cleanup for clear operations, but do not record a preference, seed __main__, or overrule main-account health. Keep the current manual reset for explicit account selections.

Maintainer integration record (MAINTAINERS.md, dev exception), on the maintainer's instruction to merge this sweep lane's PRs.

  • This carries fix(codex): commit explicit account selections atomically #6813 by @hulkbig. The original commits keep their author, and the squash body carries Co-authored-by: hulkbig. The carried tree was identical to the fix(codex): commit explicit account selections atomically #6813 union on dev 37e9294125. One test-only commit (35c3332) adds the CodeRabbit-suggested initializer-failure case.
  • Exact head 35c3332c782dcd63f556578325dd05712102133f: every check passed (ci aggregate success, test 1/4 through 4/4, gates, keyring, npm-global, docker smoke, storage policy, structure gate, docs site build, enforce-target, hygiene, label). Skipped jobs did not apply to these paths.
  • Union: this head merged onto the latest dev d10fc26f05 without conflicts. That dev already includes fix(cli): name the reviewed recovery for Aside profiles that read off (stale) #6825, fix(cli): admit update restart past an inactive service record bound to a full record fingerprint #6808, and other lanes' additions to the layout registries. On that union (tree a8248883e1), 572 focused, layout and ratchet tests passed, typecheck was clean, and structure:check passed.
  • Security review (MAINTAINERS.md requires an explicit one for authentication changes): an independent gpt-6.1-sol security reviewer gave PASS on the change and PASS on the test fold. It checked target eligibility (removed, paused, legacy-main, validation-pending), concurrent writers under the SQLite mutation lock, routing resets only after confirmed persistence, recovery validation, unchanged management authorization, and no credential or token exposure. An independent correctness review also gave PASS. On a red check, 23 of the 30 new tests fail with the dev implementation of the three runtime files.
  • The CodeRabbit thread is resolved; no change requests are outstanding.
