feat(ai-powerups): resolve AI models per capability instead of taking the first provider - #5691
Conversation
…e first provider Six AI features each read `providers.presets[0]`, re-derived the SDK name from the model string and decrypted the key themselves, so "which model runs this feature" had six answers that only happened to agree. Nobody chose that; the settings screen was never finished. Replaces it with three layers and one resolver. Connections are a credential and nothing else. The section they replace bundled a key with a single model, so two Anthropic models meant pasting the same key twice and keeping both copies in sync. Model roles are the indirection between a feature and a model: `fast`, `standard`, `vision`. A feature names a role, the project decides which model fills it. For most projects this is the whole configuration, three selects. `vision` exists because image enrichment needs a capability, not a price tier, and modelling it as a role means adding `embedding` later costs nothing. Capabilities are the per-feature exceptions, all empty by default. Features register their own, so the settings screen has no list to maintain and an extension that adds an AI feature gets a row for free. `ResolveAiCapabilityUseCase` is now the only place that knows the precedence rules: a pinned connection and model, else the chosen role, else the declared default role, else `standard`. It also catches a model paired with another vendor's credential, which used to surface as a provider auth error that said nothing about the real mistake. No environment-variable fallback: settings saying one thing while requests use another is the confusion this replaces. Prompt customisation defaults to appending. A project that appends keeps receiving prompt improvements; a project that replaces the prompt is frozen at whatever shipped the day they edited it. Full replacement sits behind a switch, and only for capabilities whose prompt is fixed text. Where the code assembles it per request from a content model schema, the field is not rendered at all. Upgrades stay quiet. `connections` and `modelRoles` seed themselves from the legacy `providers` section on first read, lifting preset 0 into `standard`, which is the only model the old code ever used. An unfilled role falls back to `standard` for the same reason. Two fixes fell out of it. The AI buttons tested `presets.length > 0`, which passed for a row with no key in it, so the button appeared and the request failed; they now check the chain the api will actually walk. And a skipped page translation used to be indistinguishable from a misconfigured one, so it logs. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
`addResolver` accepts the `[abstraction, options]` dependency tuple that the container uses everywhere else. It destructured the tuple, threw the options away, and single-resolved anyway. So a resolver asking for every implementation of an abstraction got one object instead of an array and died on `.map`. It surfaced from the AI Power-Ups settings screen as a GraphQL error reading `e.map is not a function` on `aiPowerUps.listCapabilities`, with nothing in the message pointing at the builder. The regression test reproduces exactly that: revert the one-line fix and it fails with `greeters.map is not a function`. Also stops one settings group from taking down the whole screen. The AI Power-Ups presenter awaited every group's `init()` with `Promise.all`, so this one failing query left the page with a heading, a Save button and no tabs at all, hiding the sections that worked and the personas someone came to edit. `allSettled` now reports which section failed and renders the rest. …dropping stored keys Two bugs that only appear against a running admin app. Saving the settings screen failed validation with four copies of "Invalid input: expected string, received null" and nothing to say which section was at fault. The form sends `null`, not `""`, for a field nobody has touched, and every field in a capability override plus two of the three model roles are untouched by default. The schemas now accept it, and `mapToStorage` keeps the nulls and empty strings out of storage rather than persisting a key per capability nobody configured. The worse one: `UpdateSettingsRepository` built its "existing" snapshot by calling `mapFromStorage` without the full settings blob. `connections` derives itself from the legacy `providers` section until it has one of its own, and that snapshot is what `mapToStorage` diffs against to recognise a masked key and carry the ciphertext forward. Comparing against an empty list matched nothing and wrote an empty key, so the first save after an upgrade would have silently destroyed the project's real API key. Both are covered now, including the carry-forward path and the legacy migration. A repository-level test would pin the second one harder than the handler tests do; noted as a follow-up rather than done here. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
…rited role Both found by looking at the actual screen. `itemTitle` and `itemDescription` take a string as a *field name* to read the value from, not as literal text. Passing prose made the renderer look for a child field called "Cheap, low-latency work where a smaller model is good enough" and render nothing, so every role and capability description was invisible. The titles only survived because the renderer falls back to the field label. They are callbacks now, which is the form that means "literal". That mattered more than it sounds: the Vision role's description is where it says an empty role falls back to Standard and only works there if Standard is multimodal too. That was the one warning on the screen and nobody could read it. The "Inherit (Fast)" entry in a capability's Model role select never appeared either, because the select renderer drops an option with an empty value. So nothing told you which role a feature falls back to. The default role is named in the field description instead, where it always shows; clearing the field still works through the select's own reset control. Found by saving the settings screen and reading back what landed in storage: a project that had never touched a capability came out with verbatim copies of three of our prompts. The admin pre-fills the prompt textarea with our own text, so that flipping "Replace the prompt entirely" shows you what you are about to edit. That default came back on every save, switch on or off, and `mapToStorage` kept it. Behaviour was still correct, because resolution ignores `guidance` unless `replacePrompt` is set. The damage was subtler. A stored copy is a frozen copy: flip the switch a year later and you would get whatever we shipped the day that row was first written, not the current prompt. That is precisely the trap the append-by-default design exists to avoid, arrived at from the other direction. The prompt is now stored only on explicit opt-in, so "you own it from now on" becomes true at the moment it starts being true. Normalising happens before the emptiness check too, so a row holding nothing but the discarded default disappears instead of persisting as an override of nothing. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
…itch The previous commit dropped a stored prompt whenever "Replace the prompt entirely" was off. That stops us persisting our own pre-filled default, which was the point, but it also threw away a prompt somebody had actually written the moment they toggled the switch off and saved. Toggling was lossy, and the doc still claimed it was reversible. The real test is whether the text differs from ours. A verbatim copy of our prompt is dropped, so nothing gets frozen; anything else is kept regardless of the switch, so toggling is lossless and resolution still ignores it until the switch is on. The handler now reads the registered capabilities to know what "ours" is. Also stops persisting `replacePrompt: false`, which is the default for an untouched switch and was riding along in otherwise-clean rows. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Replacing a capability's prompt is gone: the switch, the textarea, the stored `guidance` and `replacePrompt` fields, and the `guidance` field on the `listCapabilities` query. For most capabilities the prompt is not configuration, it is the output contract the surrounding code parses. Revision comparison specifies an HTML table and then regex-matches it to build the summary, including the literal sentence "No differences detected" and a `<tr>` count. Page translation specifies "a JSON object with the same keys" and then `JSON.parse`s the reply, returning null and silently skipping the translation when that fails, after which `buildUpdateData` reads the exact shape the prompt asked for. Hand someone a textarea over either and "replace the prompt" means "replace part of the implementation", with silence as the failure mode. Image enrichment was the one honest case, since its structure comes from `Output.object(...)` rather than the prose. Keeping the feature for one capability out of five is not worth the concept. `additionalInstructions` stays and is meaningfully different: the format spec is still in the prompt, so the model sees both and nobody can delete the contract. A project that needs different behaviour decorates the use case in code, which is how the AI translation itself is built, and is typed and reviewable. This also removes the most expensive thing on the screen. Both preceding commits were about this one control, first for persisting our own prompt verbatim and freezing it, then for the fix that discarded text somebody had written. Neither problem exists now. BREAKING CHANGE: `AiCapabilityOverride` no longer accepts `guidance` or `replacePrompt`, and `AiCapability.guidance` is no longer exposed over GraphQL. Nothing shipped, so no stored data is affected. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
…strip Both still described the prompt override as something a project opts into. Revision comparison now says what its prompt actually is, the output contract the use case regex-matches, which is the reason appending is the only option. Image enrichment notes the opposite case: its structure comes from `Output.object(...)`, not the prose. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

🚓 Slop Cop ✅ Nothing worth flagging. The diff looks consistent with the PR's stated intent and the code-style rules. Large but coherent PR: the diff matches the stated intent (per-capability AI model resolution), with no evidence of accidental deletions, leaked secrets, debug leftovers, or merge-conflict markers, and the added code appears to follow the project's style rules. Automated, non-blocking heads-up from an LLM. It can be wrong — use your judgment. Regenerates on every push. |
|
Superseded for now by #5693, which targets Keeping this open as a draft rather than closing it: the 6.5.0 version differs (image enrichment is an older implementation there and keeps a soft skip, and the GraphQL fix lives in |
…nsole Both skip paths added with the capability resolver used `console.error` with a hand-rolled `JSON.stringify`. They now take the injected `Logger` and pass the context object directly, which is what pino wants anyway, so the structure survives instead of arriving as an escaped string. `warn` rather than `error`: neither case is a failure. A page saves without its translation, and an upload completes without enrichment, both because no model is configured. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ng a prompt Three of the five call sites read `withAdditionalInstructions(capability.guidance, capability)`, which says the same thing twice and reads like a mistake. `baseText` is now the second parameter and defaults to the capability's own guidance, so those three are just `withAdditionalInstructions(capability)`. The two generation use cases still pass their own text, because they build a prompt per request from a content model schema or a component catalog and the capability declares no fixed guidance to fall back on. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The tab rendered capabilities in container registration order, which put "Page generation" above "CMS entry generation" for no reason a reader could infer, and would shuffle whenever a feature's registration moved. Sorted by label, which is the text people actually read, using `localeCompare` so accented labels from an extension land where someone would expect. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
…he resolver
The `listCapabilities` resolver read the registered capabilities straight off the
container and shaped them inline. `ListAiCapabilitiesUseCase` now owns that, so
the resolver is one line and the wire shape is decided next to the abstraction
it describes, like every other resolver in the file.
The summary type has no `guidance` field, which makes the omission structural
rather than something the next person editing the resolver has to remember. A
capability's prompt is implementation, and there is no reason to ship ours to
everyone who can read the settings screen.
Side effect worth noting: this was the only `addResolver` call using the
`[abstraction, { multiple: true }]` dependency form, so this branch no longer
depends on the `handler-graphql` fix. The use case takes that dependency through
`createImplementation`, which always handled it correctly.

…n side The api types the role map as `Record<AiModelRoleId, ...>`, so all three keys are enforced. The admin settled for `Record<string, ...>`, which would accept a typo as a valid role and never complain. The ids move to `~/admin/domain/modelRoles.js` so `features/` can use them without importing from `presentation/`; the labels and descriptions stay where they were, since those are words on a screen. The map stays a record rather than becoming a list, deliberately. Roles are a closed set of three named slots that a project fills, not a collection anyone appends to, and every read is by key: the resolver does `roles[requestedRole]` and `roles.standard`, and the form addresses fields as `modelRoles.roles.standard.connectionId`. Array indices would also be a poor storage key, shifting meaning if the order ever changed. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
… exists
`Record<string, AiCapabilityOverride>` says every string key is present, so a
lookup types as a defined override and the `?? {}` both callers write looks like
dead code to the compiler. A miss is the common case: most capabilities have no
override at all.
Now `Partial<Record<...>>` on both the api and admin sides, which is honest
about that. Unlike model roles this cannot be a union of known keys — features
register capabilities at runtime and extensions add their own, so there is no
compile-time set to enumerate. The fix is the value type, not the key type.
Turning it on immediately caught a real hole in `mapToStorage`: it filtered with
`Boolean(override)` to drop missing entries, which reads correctly but narrows
nothing, so the `undefined` that filter exists to remove flowed straight into
`dropEmptyValues`. It is a type guard now.

… types The connection shape was written out three times: inline in `IAiPowerUpsSettings` and again as a local `ConnectionRow` in each of the two settings tabs that read it. Three places to keep in step, and nothing to make them. `IAiPowerUpsConnectionPreset` now holds it, and both tabs import it. The role assignment gets a name too, so every section of the settings interface refers to a named type rather than one or two doing it inline. `projects.presets` is still inline. It predates this work and nothing else references it, so naming it would be diff noise in a PR that does not otherwise touch that section. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Finishes what the previous commit started: `IAiPowerUpsSettings` now refers to a named type in every section, with no anonymous shapes left inline. The project preset was the last one, and the worst of them — a seven-field file object nested inside another anonymous object, three levels deep in an interface that is meant to be read at a glance. Answers a review question about whether an existing project keeps working after upgrading without saving the settings screen. It does, but nothing was proving it, and the part that makes it work is a coincidence waiting to be broken. `ModelRoles` seeds `standard` from the legacy `providers` section with `connectionId: legacy.id`, while `Connections` derives its preset with `id: p.id`. Two handlers in different files agreeing on an id by convention, with no shared constant and nothing the compiler checks. If they ever drift, every AI feature in an upgraded project fails at once with "connection no longer exists" on a blob nobody touched. The test reads a legacy blob the way the repositories do, feeds the result through the real resolver, and covers the three things that have to hold: the capability resolves to the legacy model and decrypts the legacy key, the seeded role names the derived connection, and image work still runs by falling back to standard rather than failing on an empty `vision`. Verified it bites by renaming the id in `ModelRolesHandler`: three of the four fail. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
… file `types.ts` held two functions, which is not what anyone expects to import from a file named types. Splitting them also separated two concerns that had no reason to share a home. `readLegacyProviderPresets` and its type move to `Connections/legacyProviders.ts`. It is the only part of this feature with an expiry date: when the legacy `providers` section is finally dropped, that file and its two callers go with it, which is easier to see when it is not buried among types that are staying. `ModelRolesHandler` now imports that leaf directly instead of reaching into another feature's `types.js`. `sdkNameFromModel` moves to `shared/modelId.ts`. It was never a connections concept: it is a fact about the `"<sdkName>/<modelId>"` format, read by `Connections` and `Capabilities` alike, and the latter was importing it through the connections barrel to get at it. No behaviour change. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The comment claimed that after switching to `allSettled` a failing group init is reported "and every other tab still renders". That is not true in the case it was written for. All these queries fire in the same tick, so `BatchingGraphQLClient` sends them as one HTTP request, and `executeBatchGroup` rejects every operation in a batch when any one of them errors. A group whose query fails against the server therefore rejects `getSettings` too, and the screen still lands in the catch with no tabs, exactly as before. The change is still worth keeping, just for less than it said: a group that throws inside its own `init()`, a query that missed the batch window, and the reporting, which now names the failing section instead of surfacing one opaque error. The comment says that, and notes what fixing the batched case would cost. Also documented why the `flatMap` index is safe, since it is load-bearing and silent: `allSettled` resolves in input order. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
"Groups that build fields from server data get to load it first" read as though the array positions sequenced something. They do not: both calls are made in the same tick and `Promise.all` only waits, so position picks which result is `data` and which is `initResults`, nothing more. The ordering that is real is against `buildForm()`. A group's `init()` loads what its own `buildForm` then reads, so every init has to have settled first, and the `await` is what guarantees it. Same-tick dispatch also has a consequence the next paragraph already relied on without naming: it is precisely why these land in one `BatchingGraphQLClient` batch and share a failure. Said so, rather than stating it twice as an unrelated fact. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The comment explained the concurrency and the error handling but never the plainest thing: these two calls load different kinds of data. `getSettings` fetches the saved values, which go into the form. A group's `init()` fetches the catalogue its fields are built from: the registered capabilities to render a row each, the model list for the dropdowns. The blob does not say which fields exist and the catalogue does not say what is configured, which is why they run together rather than one after the other. Reordered so that comes first and the concurrency notes follow from it, instead of answering "why is this parallel" before saying what the two things are. Protect saved capability overrides when capability loading fails.
If CapabilitiesSettings.init() rejects, buildForm() can create capabilities.overrides with no registered capability children. FormModel.setData() hydrates only registered ObjectField children, and submit() returns getData(), so saved override keys can be discarded before updateSettings.execute(data). The settings page keeps Save Settings enabled even when vm.errors reports the initialization failure. Disable Save when a structure-loading failure exists, or preserve the original capabilities.overrides payload during submission.

Clear the model when connectionId changes. getModelOptions can remove the current model, but the form keeps the model value because the connection and model fields are persisted independently. ModelRolesHandler.mapToStorage then saves the stale pair. ResolveAiCapabilityUseCase rejects that pair when the model provider differs from connection.sdkName, so capability resolution fails and the user sees the “cannot run on” configuration error instead of the role using the new connection.
Clear modelRoles.roles[roleId].model in the connectionId change handler.

Validate capability IDs at the shared capability collection boundary.
AiCapability registrations use { multiple: true }, so the DI container provides every registered implementation and does not validate the runtime id property. If two reachable implementations use the same id, ResolveAiCapabilityUseCaseImpl keeps only the last one in its Map, while ListAiCapabilitiesUseCaseImpl returns both entries. The settings page can therefore show metadata for an implementation different from the one used during execution.
Create one validated capability collection that rejects duplicate IDs, then inject it into both use cases. Separate validation in ResolveAiCapabilityUseCaseImpl and ListAiCapabilitiesUseCaseImpl is not necessary.

Return a Result.fail when API-key decryption fails.
With a configured key, EncryptionImpl.decrypt() can throw from decipher.final() when stored ciphertext is malformed or fails authentication. ResolveAiCapabilityUseCaseImpl.execute() does not catch this error, so callers do not receive the declared Result and cannot handle it with isFail().

The port to `next` carried the fix for the first `mapFromStorage` call site but not the second. `release/6.5.0` passes `persisted` on both. The argument lets a section read one it does not own, which is how `connections` and `modelRoles` derive their first value from the legacy `providers` section. The post-save re-read happens to be safe without it today, because every handler has just written its own section and none needs the fallback. That is a property of the current handlers rather than of the call, and it is not worth leaving the two branches disagreeing on a line this load-bearing. Use capability-specific model resolution.
This check always reads the standard role. The API first evaluates a complete capability pin and then the capability role override.
If standard is empty but the capability has a valid pin or configured fast role, this helper hides a working feature. It can also show a feature when its capability pin references an unusable connection.
Pass the capability identifier or metadata to this helper. Apply the same selection precedence as ResolveAiCapabilityUseCase.

Clear model when the pinned connection changes.
The form retains the existing model value when connectionId changes. The new options hide that model, but submission can still contain the old model paired with the new connection.

When roleId === null, a pinned capability override selected the connection and model. These errors direct the user to Model roles. Changing a model role cannot fix the error because the pinned override still has precedence.

Require a new API key when the vendor changes. The form accepts the existing non-empty mask after sdkName changes. mapToStorage then preserves the old encrypted key. A model for the new vendor passes resolver validation, which decrypts that key and passes it to ai.generateText with the new provider. This can send the old vendor credential to the new provider. Preserve the encrypted key only when both the mask and vendor are unchanged; otherwise require and store a new key.

In the webiny/webiny-js repository, the packages/ai-powerups/src/api/features/Connections/ConnectionsHandler.ts file and legacyProviders.ts are components of the AI PowerUps package, which provides AI-driven functionality to the Webiny CMS [1]. The AI PowerUps package was introduced to integrate AI features—such as content generation, image enrichment, and project context management—into Webiny [1][2]. The architecture relies on a central Ai service (introduced in [3]) that utilizes a gateway to route requests to various LLM providers (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic) [3]. Regarding the specific files mentioned: - ConnectionsHandler.ts: This is part of the AI PowerUps feature set, specifically handling AI connections [1]. The system uses a DI (Dependency Injection)-native handler architecture [4] to manage these features. - legacyProviders.ts: While not explicitly detailed in the summaries of recent PRs, such files in the Webiny codebase are typically used to maintain backward compatibility or provide adapter layers for earlier versions of service integrations as the framework migrates toward its modern, DI-driven service architecture [4][3]. Webiny's AI architecture has undergone significant evolution, moving toward a decoupled system where: - The Ai service acts as a single, DI-friendly abstraction [3]. - AI-specific logic (like image enrichment and content generation) is modularized into features within ai-powerups [2]. - Context and file management (e.g., reading project files for prompts) are handled via abstracted services to avoid circular dependencies and ensure scalability [2][5]. For the most accurate and up-to-date implementation details, you should refer directly to the source code on the webiny/webiny-js GitHub repository, as internal file paths and handler structures evolve rapidly with the project's development cycle [6].

Parse persisted connection presets before mapping them.
ConnectionsHandler.mapFromStorage casts persisted without validating presets. A non-array value reaches .map, and an array containing null reaches p.id, either of which can throw. readLegacyProviderPresets checks only that providers.presets is an array; its cast does not validate each element, so a malformed element can throw at p.id in the legacy mapping path. Validate the persisted array and each preset against the persisted shape before mapping.
