Summary

  • Add reused to the use() response. It is true when useExisting returned an instance that was already running rather than starting the submitted pipeline, which until now was indistinguishable from a fresh launch.
  • Log it when the submitted pipeline differs from the running one, so an edit-and-rerun loop says why nothing changed.

Testing

  • Tests added or updated
  • Tested locally
  • ./builder test passes

./dist/server/engine -m pytest packages/ai/tests/ai/modules/task packages/ai/tests/ai/modules/mcp — 915 passed, including 3 new covering the reused flag, the differing-pipeline notice, and its absence when the pipeline is identical. ruff check / format --check clean.

Notes for the reviewer

Reuse itself is the right default — it is what keeps a warm instance cheap, and the PR does not change it. What was missing is that it was invisible.

The cost is not a confusing edit-test loop, it is that the failure produces plausible results rather than errors. From the session that turned this up: an A/B comparison of two pipeline versions returned identical numbers on all four test documents, which reads as "the change had no effect" and is in fact "the second version never ran". A configuration error that had already been fixed kept reappearing, because the value was still alive in an instance the file on disk no longer described. And since reuse carries the instance's accumulated state, run 3 of a benchmark benefits from what runs 1 and 2 taught it — inflating quality numbers in the direction that flatters whatever is being tested.

The notice goes through debug_message rather than warning() because reuse is legitimate and expected in production; a warning on every reconnect would be noise. The reused flag is the part a caller can act on programmatically.

Not included: the restart_if_changed option floated in the issue. restart() already exists and does the work, and making it automatic is a behaviour decision worth taking on its own rather than bundling here.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to dbb4b

The PR adds visibility for reused tasks and improves restart validation, but restart can still assign ownership too early and leave the running task inconsistent with the configuration reported to later callers after a failure. This can cause incorrect disconnect cleanup or stale reuse behavior, so merge requires explicit owner awareness and follow-up.

Explanation

The changes satisfy issue #2153 by adding a reused indicator, logging when a submitted pipeline differs, and preserving reuse without automatic restart. They do not satisfy the primary requirements of issue #2091: the response does not expose the effective trace level, and differing pipelines do not produce an error or change task identity.

@dsapandora, one blocking change: restart_task never updates control.pipeline, so this check breaks after a restart, the doc's recommended flow (restart(P2), then use(P2, useExisting)) warns "differs" for the pipeline that's actually running, and resubmitting the old one stays silent.

Fix: add control.pipeline = pipeline in restart_task, plus a restart-then-reuse test.

Right, and it made the comparison worse than useless — fixed in 731542a.

restart_task swapped the running configuration but left control.pipeline holding whatever was launched first, so the check read a record of something that is no longer running. The documented flow warned about the pipeline that is actually loaded, and resubmitting the replaced one passed silently. The docstring already claimed step 9 updated the control with the new pipeline; it only ever updated the provider.

Added the assignment and a test for the full flow: restart(P2) then use(P2, useExisting) asserts no difference is reported, which fails without the fix.

Good find from @coderabbitai, fixed in c510e4e — my test used pipelines that were already in launched shape, so it could not have caught this.

start_task stamps the resolved source onto the pipeline and gives the source component an empty config when it has none. restart_task stored the raw request, so the same pipeline submitted again arrived normalised and compared unequal — the check reporting a difference the launch itself introduced.

Both paths now go through one _apply_source_defaults() helper rather than two copies of the logic, so they cannot drift again. New test restarts with a pipeline whose source component has no config, then resubmits the same thing and asserts no difference is reported.

@dsapandora: Verified. start_task() and restart_task() now use _apply_source_defaults() before their stored pipelines participate in reuse comparison.

The new regression test covers a source component without config. It verifies the normalized stored pipeline and confirms that resubmission does not produce the differing-pipeline notice.

Right, and worse than it reads — fixed in 58f9961.

_apply_source_defaults raises when the source component is missing, so calling it after restart_task made it a validation that runs too late: the task is already stopped, Task.restart_task already holds the new pipeline, and control.pipeline still names the old one. Three views of the world and none of them running.

Normalising first also removes the second call — the same object goes to restart_task and to the control, so they cannot describe different things. New test asserts restart_task is never awaited for a pipeline whose source component is absent, and that the control still describes what is running.

Validate components before normalization.

start_task calls _apply_source_defaults before the existing list-type check. If pipeline['components'] is a dictionary or string, the helper calls component.get(...) on the wrong shape and raises AttributeError instead of ValueError('Invalid components in pipeline'). Move the type check before normalization, or make _apply_source_defaults validate the shape.

Right again, @coderabbitai — and it was my helper that introduced it. _apply_source_defaults stamps the control's source onto the pipeline, so a restart naming a different source was silently overwritten: the caller would believe it had switched source and be told nothing, while restart_task's docstring says the source is part of the task identity and cannot change.

Fixed in the latest commit: the explicit source is compared before the helper runs, and a mismatch is refused naming both sources. Test asserts restart_task is never awaited for that request.

@dsapandora Verified. restart_task() now rejects an explicit source that differs from control.source before _apply_source_defaults() can overwrite it.

The error identifies both sources. The regression test uses a valid alternate source and confirms that Task.restart_task() is not awaited. This addresses the finding.

* fix(task): tell the caller when useExisting returned a running instance

use() with useExisting accepts a pipeline, ignores it when a task with that
token is already running, and returns the live instance with a response
identical to a fresh launch. The caller has no way to tell that the
configuration it just sent was not applied.

An A/B comparison across two pipeline versions returns the same numbers for
both and reads as 'the change had no effect'. A configuration error that was
already fixed keeps reappearing, because the value lives on in an instance the
file no longer describes. The instance also carries whatever state earlier runs
left behind, so a benchmark's later runs benefit from its earlier ones.

Add 'reused' to the response, and say in the log when the submitted pipeline
differs from the running one. Reuse stays the default - it is what keeps a warm
instance cheap; what was missing is that it was invisible.

* fix(task): a restart updates the pipeline the control describes

restart_task swapped the running configuration but left control.pipeline
holding whatever was launched first, which the docstring already said it
should update. The comparison added in this PR then read a record of something
that is no longer running: restart(P2) followed by use(P2, useExisting) - the
documented way to apply new configuration to a live token - warned that the
submitted pipeline differed, while resubmitting the replaced one passed
silently. Exactly backwards.

* fix(task): store a restarted pipeline in the shape a launch would

A launch stamps the resolved source onto the pipeline and gives the source
component an empty config when it has none. restart_task stored the raw
request, so the same pipeline submitted again arrived normalised and compared
unequal to what was stored - the comparison reporting a difference that the
launch itself had introduced.

Both paths now go through one helper, so they cannot drift apart again.

* fix(task): validate the restarted pipeline before the task is stopped

_apply_source_defaults raises when the source component is missing, so calling
it after restart_task made it a validation that runs too late: the task is
already stopped, Task.restart_task already holds the new pipeline, and
control.pipeline still names the old one - three views of the world and none of
them running.

Normalising first also removes the second call: the same object goes to
restart_task and to the control, so they cannot describe different things.

* fix(task): refuse a restart that names a different source

The source is part of the task's identity and a restart cannot change it, as
restart_task's own docstring says. But _apply_source_defaults stamps the
control's source onto the pipeline, so a request naming a different one was
overwritten without a word: the caller would believe it had switched source and
be told nothing.

Compared before the helper runs, so the request is refused rather than quietly
rewritten.

- .gitignore: keep this branch's removal of the three client package READMEs
(they are committed generated copies that docs:check verifies); take
  develop's new packages/chat-widget/README.md entry.
- llm_anthropic: take develop's extended-thinking table. Verified against
  llm_native_stream.py:60-142 — Claude 4.7+ rejects the legacy
{enabled, budget_tokens} shape with a 400, so the legacy list is an
allowlist and unknown models default to adaptive. This branch's table was
stale and would have documented a shape that errors.
- clients/index.md: take develop's package names. Verified against
  pyproject.toml and package.json — all three artifacts are `rocketride`
1.3.0; the `rocketlib-*` names here were stale, including in the install
  examples below the table.
- 8 store_* nodes: fold in the honored tool filter/metadata keys from #1753,
verified at document_store.py:775-796 (filter honors objectId/nodeId/parent,
additionalProperties false) and :934-943 (metadata defaults).
- text_output, llm_openai, store_chroma, tool_slack: fold develop's new facts
into this branch's schema structure rather than reverting the migration.
- 6 modify/delete paths: keep the delete. Five were already covered in the new
tree (connect/cli.mdx, db_hotdata's README). The sixth was not — the
`reused` flag from #2165 appeared nowhere under docs/public/, so it is
ported into the TypeScript and Python pipelines.md and reference.md.

Stale tables develop invalidated, refreshed from services.json:

- llm_openai: 36 missing profiles added, 6 token mismatches corrected (#1784).
- llm_anthropic: claude-fable-5-1 added; claude-opus-5-fast moved to the
  collapsed table.
- store_weaviate: default profile flipped cloud -> local (#1952).

Node README migration for the 7 nodes develop added while this branch was
open — chunker, db_firestore, search_hybrid, tool_crustdata, tool_gcs,
tool_notion, tool_vertex_search — all now conform to the README schema.

docs/README-chat-widget.md moves to docs/public/chat-widget/README.md so the
three-subtree contract holds; docs:gather ignores README.md, so it stages
nothing, and the clients page links it by URL. The widget has no site route
yet and is not in the clients table.

Verified: docs:build (232 pages, 150 nodes, no broken links), docs:check,
docs:test (57/57), validate-client-docs.py, and validate-node-readme.py
across all 19 touched nodes (0 failed, 0 warnings).
