Part of #528.

Adds Home › Web Data › NASA Earthaccess… (global list) and Home › Web Data › United States › USGS NLDI…, both in the Web Data pane, laid out like GeoLibre's Earthaccess and NLDI panels.

NASA Earthaccess

  • Dataset: Popular datasets (GeoLibre's presets: ICESat-2 ATL03/06/08, GEDI L2A/L2B/L4A, HLS L30/S30, NASADEM; the cloud-hosted, newest version), or a keyword search of CMR collections with Earthdata Cloud only.
  • Granules: start/end dates and Search this view (CMR granules where the map is, newest first, 25 a page with Load more); their footprints drawn as one layer.
  • Granule cards: browse preview, date · cloud · files, Add (first GeoTIFF as a COG read in place), Download, Zoom, Details (Earthdata Search), and Files (n) with a per-file Add.
  • Earthdata Login token: a password field in the pane (or earthdata.login), kept in memory for the session only (like S3 credentials), never in the project. The native fetcher adds Authorization: Bearer only to https:// hosts ending earthdatacloud.nasa.gov / earthdata.nasa.gov (never urs.earthdata.nasa.gov, no user info or port), re-checked at every redirect hop so it is dropped on the presigned CloudFront/S3 hop; a redirect to urs (or a 401) becomes a clear message (no token / token refused or EULA needed).
  • Web app: search and footprints work (CMR sends CORS); protected files can't be read by the browser (DAACs send no CORS, and GeoLibre's relay at tiles.geolibre.app/earthdata/download only accepts GeoLibre origins), so Add is desktop-only and the pane says why; Download opens the file in a new tab.
  • Commands: earthdata.collections, earthdata.granules, earthdata.login, earthdata.logout, earthdata.status. Searches are in NETWORK; login/logout are user-only (never plugins; the assistant asks).

USGS NLDI

  • Point: a map click (crosshair while the pane is open, the point marked on the map), typed lon/lat + Trace, or Map centre; flowline direction whole / upstream / downstream.
  • Flowline: the pygeoapi nldi-flowtrace POST (inputs as a list, which the process actually reads; GeoLibre's object form fails server-side), falling back to the hydrolocation + COMID flowline with a synthetic raindrop path.
  • Basin from hydrolocation, navigation method + distance (1–9999 km), Load sources & plot (loads the navigation's sources, flowlines first, and plots), Plot another navigation layer, Clear NLDI result. Every result is a styled layer.
  • Commands: nldi.flowline, nldi.comid, nldi.basin, nldi.sources, nldi.navigate (all in NETWORK).
  • New cache::post_json / post_json_blocking (thread natively, set_poster with the browser's fetch on the web) for the flowtrace POST. NLDI 5xx errors are explained (its server often fails on unseen points).

Verified (real network)

  • CLI: earthdata.collections (keyword), earthdata.granules by shortName HLSL30 over Wisconsin (10 granules, footprints exported); layer.addUrl of a protected HLS COG without a token → "NASA asks for an Earthdata Login token…", with a bogus JWT → "Earthdata Login didn't accept the token…" (the token went to the DAAC and the redirect to urs was caught). No public COG was found to add (HLS/OPERA/ASTER/GEDI data links are all protected); browse JPEGs on the public bucket load as card thumbnails.
  • CLI: nldi.flowline at the Yahara River gage (COMID 13293750), nldi.basin, nldi.sources (21 sources), nldi.navigate UM 100 km flowlines (24) and DM 50 km nwissite (10), exported map.
  • ui_shot (light theme): Earthaccess keyword results; HLSL30 granules with footprints and thumbnails; Add without a token shows the token message. NLDI trace → flowline + raindrop path, basin, upstream main-stem flowlines plotted.
  • Unit tests: token host rules (look-alike hosts, http, ports, user info, urs), token store and JWT expiry, CMR request building (dates, antimeridian, paging bounds, bad ids), granule/collection parsing incl. hostile answers, NLDI requests/parsing incl. hostile answers; hostile_params_never_panic green; clippy -D warnings on tiles/engine/ui-egui; cargo build --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-web; pre-commit.

Not done

  • Downloading whole granules / ICESat-2 & GEDI .h5 opening (GeoLibre opens them in its lidar reader): Download hands the file to the browser.
  • Signing in with user + password for a token (GeoLibre's find_or_create_token): paste a token instead.
  • CMR's CMR-Hits header (total count) isn't exposed by the download path, so the pane says "Showing N" rather than "N of M".

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added NASA Earthdata search for collections and granules, with date and map-area filters, result previews, file links, and map footprints.
    • Added Earthdata Login token controls for accessing eligible data files.
    • Added USGS NLDI tools to trace streams from a map point or coordinates, view basins, and explore navigation routes and sources.
  • Documentation
    • Added user-guide instructions and command examples for Earthdata and NLDI tools.

A new Web Data button beside Add Data gathers the web services and
catalogs: Boundaries, OpenStreetMap, Overture Maps, Search Open Data,
Source Cooperative and STAC Search move there from Add Data, which
keeps local files and connections. Services covering the world go in
one alphabetical list; those covering one country will go in a
submenu named after it.
Home › Web Data gains ArcGIS Portal, Earthdata GIS, GeoLens, Hugging
Face, Ocean Data Platform, OpenAerialMap, France › IGN LiDAR HD and
United States › US Federal/State/Local GIS and USGS 3DEP DEM. Each is a
portal kind of portal.search (new kinds: arcgis-portal, earthdata-gis,
openaerialmap, usgs-dem, ign-lidar, geolens, huggingface, ocean-data),
with portal.files listing a Hugging Face dataset's files. The US
portals (24 federal, 68 state, 146 local) are a built-in catalog.

Every Web Data entry, the existing STAC Search, OpenStreetMap,
Boundaries, Overture Maps, Source Cooperative and Search Open Data
included, now opens in a Web Data pane on the right instead of a
dialog. portal.add adds an ArcGIS map or image service's whole map
rather than its first sublayer.
- OpenAerialMap: with words, ask for 200 images and keep to the words
before cutting to 50, rather than filtering only the newest 50.
- A Socrata portal among the US catalogs says it needs words.
- Hugging Face: strip the dataset page prefix once (strip_prefix).
- The result count names the catalog the search began on.
- A search by place stays where the map is even when view is false.
Each result is a card with the service's picture of it, what it is,
who shared it and when, and Details, Portal, Zoom and Add. ArcGIS
portals gain web maps (Add lists their layers), All/Imagery/Maps/
Features/Web maps chips, newest items on opening, "Showing N of M" and
Load more (OpenAerialMap pages too). portal.search takes "type" and
answers each dataset's kind, date and thumbnail; portal.files lists a
web map's layers.
- A portal's thumbnails get the same address check as its resources.
- bbox4 checks every coordinate's range.
- OpenAerialMap keeps every match on a page (Load more continues
after all the images fetched); LiDAR HD lists its first 50 tiles.
- A new search drops the earlier results' pictures and textures.
- portal.files reaches the network: the assistant asks first, plugins
need the network permission; files_query has a unit test.
- The guide says what the searches by place, Hugging Face listings and
the Ocean Data Platform's catalogue read, and that the web app's ODP
  features pass through GeoLibre's relay.
NASA Earthaccess searches CMR collections (keyword or popular
datasets) and a collection's granules where the map is between two
dates, draws their footprints and adds a granule's GeoTIFF as a COG.
An Earthdata Login token, kept for the session only, is sent only to
HTTPS Earthdata data hosts and dropped on redirects leaving them.

USGS NLDI traces a point's flowline (flowtrace, with the
hydrolocation fallback), its basin, and navigation up- or downstream
to flowlines and linked sources, each added as a layer.

The new NASA Earthaccess and USGS NLDI tools work, with some rough edges. With the NLDI pane open, map clicks can start traces instead of reaching the active tool. A failed "Load more" request can silently skip a page of results. Old footprints stay on the map after the dataset changes. Footprints that cross the antimeridian render as near-global bands. The session token is also sent to public NASA services that do not need it. These problems are bounded, but they are worth fixing soon.

Code review

I read the engine commands, the cache/POST changes, the web post_json, and the token handling in earthdata.rs. I did not read the UI files (earthaccessui.rs, nldiui.rs), the NLDI parsing in crates/tiles/src/nldi.rs, the docs, or the tests. I only skimmed the token handling.

Bugs

  • No definite bugs found.

Security

  • POST agent skips the public-only resolver (medium-low confidence). native::post and post_json_blocking use download_agent, which has no PublicOnly resolver. address::check only vets the literal URL, so a hostname that resolves to a private address (DNS rebinding) is not caught. The URLs are fixed NLDI addresses today, but post_json is a general pub API. See the inline comment at crates/tiles/src/cache.rs:763.
  • The Earthdata token handling looks sound:
    • It is sent only over HTTPS to hosts under earthdatacloud.nasa.gov or earthdata.nasa.gov, never to the login host.
    • Hosts with user info or a port are rejected.
    • The token is re-checked at each redirect hop, and it is not sent to presigned URLs.
    • earthdata.login and earthdata.logout are in the plugin NEVER list.

Performance

  • Nothing notable. The POST threads are bounded by the 60 s timeout, and reads are capped at MAX_BYTES.

Quality

  • The wasm fetch_post in nldi.rs falls back to a plain GET (it calls fetch), which only returns an error. That is harmless but a little odd. Returning an explicit error would be clearer. (Low confidence, nit.)
  • earthdata::fetch and nldi::fetch are near-duplicates, so the error-mapping differences between them could drift.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, expect or panic in non-test code, as far as I saw.
  • The wasm path is covered: the browser installs a poster and post_json has a web build.
  • I did not check the new tl! wrapping in the UI files, or whether hostile_params_never_panic covers the new commands. They are worth confirming.

Code review

I read the full diff and the redirect and agent setup in cache.rs. I did not build or run anything. The PR is well structured and the hostile-input handling is good. The redirect logic checks the token host at every hop, max_redirects(0) is set on the agents, and the new parsers are bounded. I found one security concern and a few smaller points.

Bugs

  • crates/engine/src/cmd/nldi.rs (wasm fetch_post): it ignores the body and sends a GET to the flowtrace URL, which gives a misleading error on wasm. It should return the "use the app" error directly. Confidence: medium-low. Inline comment posted.
  • crates/tiles/src/earthdata.rs (is_date): it accepts days up to 31 for any month, so 2024-02-31 passes and the error comes back from CMR instead of the local check. Confidence: low, minor.

Security

  • crates/tiles/src/earthdata.rs (is_data_host): only the exact host urs.earthdata.nasa.gov is excluded. Other names under *.earthdata.nasa.gov, such as uat.urs.earthdata.nasa.gov, would get the bearer token. Excluding the whole urs subtree with !within(&h, LOGIN_HOST) matches the documented intent. Confidence: medium. Inline comment posted.
  • earthaccessui.rs (thumbnails): the pane decodes up to 4 MB of remote images with image::load_from_memory and no dimension cap. A very large decoded size could use a lot of memory. Confidence: low.

Performance

  • earthaccessui.rs: failed thumbnails are never retried. This is fine, but each pane session can start up to 200 background downloads. Confidence: low.
  • cache::post_json (web): the size cap is checked after the whole response is buffered. Confidence: low.

Quality

  • earthaccessui.rs: found.len() >= 20 for "more collections" duplicates the page-size literal used in search_collections. A shared constant would keep them in step.
  • nldiui.rs: picking defaults to true, so any Explore-tool click on the map while the NLDI pane is open fires a network trace. That takes the click away from identify and select. It is documented behaviour, but defaulting it off, or showing a visible hint, would be safer. Confidence: low.
  • nldiui.rs: the flowtrace answer is parsed once in poll and again inside nldi.flowline. This is harmless duplication.

AGENTS.md

  • The no-unwrap/panic rule and the tl!/i18n::fmt usage look followed. I saw no unwrap in the non-test code.
  • earthdata.login and earthdata.logout are added to the plugin NEVER list, and the network commands are added to NETWORK. Both are good.
  • I could not confirm that hostile_params_never_panic exercises the new commands. The PR says it is green. Confidence: n/a.
  • The PR adds no assets, so no ATTRIBUTION.md rows are needed.

- Keep the Earthdata token from every login host (*.urs.earthdata.nasa.gov),
and treat a redirect to any of them as a refusal
- nldi.flowline in the web app says to use the pane instead of sending
  the flowtrace as a GET

Code review

I read the diff and the token handling in crates/tiles/src/earthdata.rs. I did not read the new UI files, crates/tiles/src/nldi.rs, or the rest of earthdata.rs, and I did not build or run anything. I found no confirmed bugs. I posted no inline comments, because the points below are minor and I wasn't sure enough of any of them to pin to a line.

Bugs

  • None confirmed.
  • Low confidence: in nldi::flowline (crates/engine/src/cmd/nldi.rs), the snapped parameter only takes effect when answer is also given. A caller who passes snapped without answer gets it silently ignored. The command text says "with a COMID's flowline", so this may be intended.
  • Low confidence: nldi.flowline calls fetch(&nldi::comid_url(c)), which treats the body as a flowtrace. That works only if parse_flowtrace also accepts a bare COMID flowline FeatureCollection. I didn't check parse_flowtrace.

Security

  • No problems found in the token handling:
    • authorization() gives the token only to HTTPS Earthdata data hosts.
    • The host check excludes the login host and public hosts.
    • The header is re-decided at each redirect hop and left off for presigned URLs.
    • set_token validates the token's characters and length.
    • earthdata.login and earthdata.logout are in the plugin NEVER list.
  • post_json runs address::check first. On native it uses the public-only agent (no local-network resolution) and does not follow redirects. In the browser it uses RequestRedirect::Error. The response size is capped on both.
  • Low-severity gap: earthdata.login is not in NETWORK, so it isn't treated as a network command. That seems right, since it only stores the token. Confirm the assistant's approval gate still covers it. The token comes from the user and never reaches the model, so the risk is small.

Performance

  • post_json_blocking and the blocking fetch calls run on the command thread. BLOCKING_TIMEOUT bounds them, so this is acceptable for the CLI. The app is meant to use the answer path instead.
  • nldi::add builds the full GeoJSON string (fc.to_string()) before the 256 MB check. The oversize case therefore costs a large allocation first. The input is already capped at MAX_BYTES, so this is minor.

Quality

  • earthdata::fetch returns the raw download error. nldi::fetch wraps it in nldi::explain. Using the same wrapper in both would give consistent messages.
  • The two fetch/fetch_post stubs in nldi.rs, and the one in earthdata.rs, use #[cfg(target_arch = "wasm32")] with the same message. That is fine, but a shared helper would remove the duplication.
  • In the Look match in nldi::add, Flowline | Navigation is split again with matches! inside the arm. Separate arms would read more clearly.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, expect or panic in the new non-test code. Locks use unwrap_or_else(|e| e.into_inner()).
  • wasm: the post_json poster is installed in web.rs, and the blocking functions are cfg-gated.
  • Not verified from the diff:
    • Whether the hostile-parameters test (hostile_params_never_panic) picks up the new earthdata.* and nldi.* commands. It probably does, since it iterates the registry.
    • Whether tl! is used throughout the new UI files (earthaccessui.rs, nldiui.rs).
    • Whether docs/user-guide/data.md was updated. It was, per the stats.
