Overview

OpenCloud version 2.0.5 is now available and includes critical fixes that address data synchronization issues and trash-bin functionality. We strongly recommend applying this patch to all production environments.

What's Fixed

1. File Upload Synchronization Issue PR #387

Problem:
In previous versions, files being uploaded could be read by concurrent operations (such as folder listings) before the upload was completely finished. This caused the file's ETag (a unique identifier used to track file versions) to change during the upload process, leading clients to incorrectly believe the file had been modified remotely.

Impact:

• Desktop and mobile sync clients would unnecessarily re-download files immediately after uploading them
• Increased bandwidth consumption and storage I/O load
• Poor user experience with apparent "sync conflicts" or duplicate downloads
• Higher failure rates with large files or when post-processing was enabled
• Issue frequency increased with concurrent user activity

Solution:
File uploads are now atomic operations. Files are written to temporary locations and only made visible once completely ready, ensuring consistent ETags throughout the entire upload process.

Testing Results:

• Before fix: 41 failures out of 838 uploads (4.9% failure rate)
• After fix: 0 failures out of 871 uploads (0% failure rate)

2. Trash-Bin Restore Issue PR #381

Problem:
When restoring files from the trash-bin, extended file attributes were not properly preserved, which could lead to unexpected side effects and data inconsistencies.

Impact:

• File metadata loss during restore operations
• Potential conflicts when restoring files
• Inconsistent file state after restoration

Solution:
Extended attributes are now correctly preserved during trash-bin restore operations, maintaining complete file integrity.

Why You Should Apply This Patch

1. Eliminate Unnecessary Downloads: Stop sync clients from re-downloading files they just uploaded, saving bandwidth and improving performance
2. Improve User Experience: Remove false sync conflicts and duplicate download scenarios
3. Ensure Data Integrity: Maintain complete file metadata during trash-bin operations

Recommended Action

Apply this patch immediately, especially if you experience:

• Users reporting files being re-downloaded after upload
• High bandwidth usage during sync operations

Installation

For docker and kubernetes installations, just raise the patch level of the used opencloud container image and apply the upgrade. There is no downtime needed.
