fix(terminal): the legacy workflow-step modal can open (#16312) - #16909
Conversation
`showLegacyModal` was set to FALSE at three sites and to true at none, and
`isAdvancedMode` was declared with the comment "Use advanced modal by default"
and never read. So the documented fallback could not open under any condition —
and a route that cannot run is indistinguishable from one that simply never
triggered, which is why this survived.
`requestManualStepConfirmation` now branches on `isAdvancedMode` instead of
always opening the advanced modal. The default stays true, so behaviour is
unchanged: the advanced modal opens exactly as before. What changes is that the
flag is now read, and the fallback is reachable.
Per the no-deletion rule, the fallback is wired rather than removed. The issue
offered retiring it as the alternative if the owner did not want it; that is a
product call, and wiring it is the reversible one — a flag that is read can be
defaulted either way later, while deleted markup cannot.
Three tests, added to the existing suite so they inherit its service mocks:
* the advanced modal opens by default — the control, and what proves the
change is behaviour-preserving rather than just present;
* `isAdvancedMode = false` opens the legacy modal and not the advanced one —
the path this issue exists for, which fails without the branch;
* both paths mark the step pending and set waitingForUserConfirmation, so the
fallback cannot open while the workflow forgets to pause.
Mounted with @vue/test-utils rather than the file's testing-library helper
because the subject is the DECISION, not the rendering: the exposed refs are
what is asserted, and testing-library deliberately does not surface them. That
the legacy modal renders once its prop is true is already covered by
TerminalModals.test.ts, so this does not re-test it.
The block builds its own i18n instance rather than exporting test-utils'
module-private one — same shape, empty messages, warnings off. Exporting a
shared helper to satisfy one test would widen a seam for no gain.

Unmount direct mounts and clear the cursor interval.
mountWindow() returns wrappers that the tests never unmount. Each mounted TerminalWindow starts startCursorBlink() with setInterval() and registers event listeners. These resources can remain active across tests and keep the test runtime open.
Unmount the wrappers in afterEach. Also retain the cursor interval handle and clear it in onUnmounted; the current hook clears only the focus interval and event listeners.

Assert the modal visibility props in the routing tests.
The branch correctly sets showManualStepModal or showLegacyModal, and TerminalWindow.vue binds them to AdvancedStepConfirmationModal.visible and TerminalModals.showLegacyModal. However, the routing tests replace both components with plain <div> stubs and inspect only the parent refs. They would still pass if either template binding were removed or connected to the wrong prop. Capture the stub props, or mount the modal components, and assert the visibility prop for both modes. The pending and waiting-state assertions can remain.

Thinking Path
showLegacyModalwas set to false at three sites and to true at none.isAdvancedModewasdeclared with the comment "Use advanced modal by default" and never read. So the fallback the
template carries could not open under any condition.
That is why it survived: a route that cannot run looks exactly like a route that simply never
triggered. Nothing was red, nothing was missing, and the modal sat in
TerminalModalsbeing testedin isolation —
TerminalModals.test.tsmounts it withshowLegacyModal: trueand it renderscorrectly. The component worked; nothing could reach it.
The issue offered retiring it as the alternative if the fallback is not wanted. I wired it,
because that is the reversible direction: a flag that is read can be defaulted either way later,
whereas deleted markup cannot. Retiring it remains a product call and this does not foreclose it.
What Changed
requestManualStepConfirmationbranches onisAdvancedModeinstead of always opening the advancedmodal. The default stays
true, so behaviour is unchanged — the advanced modal opens exactly asbefore. What changes is that the flag is now read and the fallback is reachable.
Verification
Three tests, added to the existing suite so they inherit its terminal/websocket service mocks:
isAdvancedMode = falseopens the legacy modal, not the advanced onependingWorkflowStepandwaitingForUserConfirmationThe first is the one that makes the second trustworthy: without it, a change that opened the legacy
modal always would pass just as happily.
Mounted with
@vue/test-utilsrather than the file's testing-library helper, deliberately: thesubject here is the decision, and the exposed refs are what must be asserted. Testing-library
does not surface them, by design. Whether the modal renders once its prop is true is already
covered by
TerminalModals.test.ts, so this does not re-test it.The block builds its own i18n instance rather than exporting test-utils' module-private one — same
shape, empty messages, warnings off. Widening a shared seam to satisfy one test is not worth it.
CI is the gate; I cannot run vitest in this checkout.

Single-issue rationale
#16312 is one component's control flow plus its tests. Not batched with the Knowledge-sidebar train
(#16907) — that is navigation across a different surface, and this is a behavioural change a
reviewer should be able to accept or reject on its own. It shares no file with anything else in
flight.
Not in this PR
Nothing sets
isAdvancedModeto false in production yet, so the fallback is reachable byconfiguration and by test, not by a user action. Making it a user setting is a product decision, not
one to slip into a wiring fix — and the second criterion ("no declared-but-unread flag remains") is
satisfied either way, because the flag is now read.
