Epic: Consolidate All Monitoring Systems into Prometheus + Grafana #80

Closed

Description

@mrveiss

Overview

Migrate all disparate monitoring, metrics, and dashboard systems to a unified Prometheus + Grafana stack for centralized observability.

Current State

AutoBot has 10+ separate monitoring systems with overlapping functionality:

  • Multiple in-memory metrics collectors
  • Various REST API endpoints for metrics
  • Several frontend dashboards
  • Partial Loki + Grafana setup

Goal

Single source of truth for all metrics via:

  • Prometheus - Time-series database for all metrics
  • Grafana - Unified dashboards and alerting
  • Loki - Centralized log aggregation

Benefits

  • ✅ Unified observability - Single pane of glass
  • ✅ Reduced complexity - One metrics system vs. 10+
  • ✅ Better alerting - Prometheus AlertManager
  • ✅ Historical data - Long-term storage and trending
  • ✅ Standard tooling - Industry-standard stack
  • ✅ Resource efficiency - Eliminate duplicate collectors

Migration Targets

High Priority (Easy Wins)

  • System Metrics (src/utils/system_metrics.py)
  • Workflow Metrics (src/metrics/workflow_metrics.py)
  • Error Metrics (src/utils/error_metrics.py)
  • Claude API Monitor (src/monitoring/claude_api_monitor.py)

Medium Priority (Infrastructure)

  • Service Health Checks → Prometheus gauges
  • Loki + Grafana integration completion
  • Frontend dashboards → Grafana embedded panels

Low Priority (Cleanup)

  • Deprecate redundant REST endpoints
  • Remove in-memory metric stores
  • Consolidate alert systems to AlertManager

  (Backend, NPU, (System, Workflows,
Redis, AI Stack) API, Errors, etc.)

Success Criteria

  1. All metrics accessible via Prometheus queries
  2. Unified Grafana dashboards for all monitoring
  3. AlertManager configured for critical alerts
  4. No more custom in-memory metric storage
  5. Historical metrics retention (30+ days)

    🏗️ Architecture Design Complete

Systems Architect Analysis: Comprehensive consolidation architecture designed.

    📊 Current State Summary

30+ monitoring files across 7 major subsystems:

    • PrometheusMetricsManager (already exists) - Timeout, Redis, Circuit Breaker, Workflow, GitHub, Task metrics
    • SystemMetricsCollector - CPU, Memory, Disk, Network, Service Health
    • WorkflowMetricsCollector - Execution stats (redundant with Prometheus)
    • ErrorMetricsCollector - Error tracking with alerting
    • ClaudeAPIMonitor - API monitoring
    • MonitoringAlertsManager - Custom alert rules
    • PerformanceMonitor - GPU/NPU/multimodal metrics

    Problems identified:

    • Fragmented data (7+ independent stores)
    • Inconsistent retention (1000-10000 entries, no time-based)
    • Redundant metrics (workflow in 2 places)
    • Multiple alerting systems
    • Redis sprawl (different key patterns)
    • No long-term storage (in-memory deques lost on restart)

    🎯 Consolidation Strategy

Architecture: Push to Registry, Pull by Prometheus

    Components → PrometheusMetricsManager → Prometheus → Grafana
                      (Push) (Pull/Scrape) (Visualize)
                                              ↓
                                        AlertManager → WebSocket

Memory Savings: ~50-100MB (remove 6+ deques + Redis keys)

Code Reduction: ~2000 lines of metric collection code

    📅 Migration Phases

Phase 1: Foundation (Week 1) - Quick Wins

    • Extend PrometheusMetricsManager with system, error, Claude API metrics
    • Create adapter layer for dual-write during migration
    • Deploy Prometheus server (scrape interval: 15s)
    • Risk: LOW - Additive changes only

Phase 2: Consumer Migration (Week 2-3) - Core Systems

    • Migrate SystemMetricsCollector → Prometheus
    • Migrate ErrorMetricsCollector → Prometheus
    • Delete WorkflowMetricsCollector (redundant)
    • Migrate ClaudeAPIMonitor → Prometheus
    • Risk: MEDIUM - Behavior changes

Phase 3: Alert Migration (Week 4) - AlertManager

    • Convert monitoring_alerts rules → Prometheus AlertManager YAML
    • Create /api/webhook/alertmanager for WebSocket integration
    • Dual-run both alert systems for validation
    • Risk: HIGH - Critical alerts must not be missed

Phase 4: Grafana Integration (Week 5) - Dashboards

    • Create Grafana dashboards (Overview, System, Workflow, Errors)
    • Vue GrafanaDashboard embed component
    • REST API compatibility layer (PromQL proxy)
    • Risk: MEDIUM - Frontend integration

Phase 5: Cleanup (Week 6) - Remove Legacy

    • Delete deque buffers, reduce memory
    • Remove workflow_metrics.py entirely
    • Clean Redis metric keys
    • Risk: LOW - Final cleanup

    🔑 Key Technical Decisions

    Decision Choice Rationale
Data Flow Push to registry, pull by Prometheus Standard pattern, no push gateway
Caching Minimal (100 items for WebSocket) Prometheus handles retention
REST APIs Deprecate but maintain Gradual migration, PromQL backend
Alerts Gradual dual-run Can't risk missing critical alerts

    📈 Success Metrics

    Metric Target
    Metric Endpoints 1 (from 9+)
    Memory Usage -50%
    Code Lines -2000
    Query Latency <100ms
    Alert Latency <30s
    Dashboard Load <2s

    🚧 Risk Mitigation

    1. Cardinality Explosion → Use bounded labels (workflow_type not workflow_id)
    2. Scrape Latency → Optimized generate_latest(), monitor duration
    3. Data Loss → Parallel systems during transition
    4. Alert Disruption → Keep old alerting until validated

    Rollback: Each phase independently rollbackable
