Phase 5: Cleanup & Deprecation - Remove Legacy Monitoring Code #348

Closed

Description

@mrveiss

Overview

Parent Epic: #80 - Consolidate All Monitoring Systems into Prometheus + Grafana

Phase: 5 of 5 - Cleanup & Deprecation

Duration: Week 6

Risk Level: 🟢 LOW (final cleanup, all systems migrated)

Depends on: #347 (Phase 4)

Goals

  1. Remove all legacy metric storage (deques, Redis keys)
  2. Delete redundant monitoring code
  3. Reduce memory footprint by ~50-100MB
  4. Complete consolidation to Prometheus + Grafana

Tasks

Remove In-Memory Buffers

SystemMetricsCollector (src/utils/system_metrics.py):

  • Remove self._metrics_buffer = deque(maxlen=100)
  • Remove store_metrics() method (Redis storage)
  • Delete get_recent_metrics() method (deprecated)
  • Keep only Prometheus push logic
  • Estimated savings: ~10-20MB

ErrorMetricsCollector (src/utils/error_metrics.py):

  • Remove in-memory error list
  • Remove Redis persistence logic
  • Delete get_error_stats() method (deprecated)
  • Keep only Prometheus counter/gauge logic
  • Estimated savings: ~5-10MB

ClaudeAPIMonitor (src/monitoring/claude_api_monitor.py):

  • Remove self._call_history = deque(maxlen=100)
  • Delete get_recent_calls() method (deprecated)
  • Keep only Prometheus metric recording
  • Estimated savings: ~2-5MB

PerformanceMonitor (src/utils/performance_monitor.py):

  • Remove all deques (6+ with maxlen=1440)
  • Remove Redis metric storage
  • Migrate remaining metrics to Prometheus
  • Estimated savings: ~30-50MB

Delete Redundant Files

  • Delete src/metrics/workflow_metrics.py (if not already removed in Phase 2)
  • Delete backend/api/monitoring_utils.py (if no longer used)
  • Remove unused monitoring API endpoints
  • Clean up imports across codebase

Code Reduction:

  • Estimated: ~2000 lines removed
  • Files deleted: 2-3
  • Methods removed: 10-15

Clean Up Redis Metric Keys

Identify and remove old metric keys:

  • metrics:system:*
  • metrics:workflow:*
  • metrics:errors:*
  • metrics:claude_api:*
  • metrics:performance:*
  • Document remaining Redis keys (if any)

Script: scripts/cleanup_redis_metrics.py:

async def cleanup_redis_metrics():
    redis = get_redis_client(database="metrics")

    # Find all old metric keys
    patterns = [
        "metrics:system:*",
        "metrics:workflow:*",
        "metrics:errors:*",
        "metrics:claude_api:*",
        "metrics:performance:*"
    ]

    for pattern in patterns:
        keys = await redis.keys(pattern)
        if keys:
            await redis.delete(*keys)
            print(f"Deleted {len(keys)} keys matching {pattern}")

Estimated savings: ~10-20MB Redis memory

Refactor REST API Endpoints

backend/api/metrics.py:

  • Remove direct buffer access
  • All endpoints must use PromQL queries
  • Add final deprecation notice (removal in v3.0)
  • Consider marking endpoints as @deprecated

backend/api/monitoring.py:

  • Remove in-memory metric access
  • Proxy all requests to Prometheus
  • Add migration guide in response headers

Update Documentation

  • Update docs/api/COMPREHENSIVE_API_DOCUMENTATION.md
  • Document Prometheus metrics list
  • Document Grafana dashboard URLs
  • Document deprecation timeline
  • Update docs/architecture/ with new monitoring stack
  • Create migration guide for API consumers

Final Testing

  • Run full system for 24 hours
  • Verify no metric loss
  • Verify all dashboards functional
  • Verify alerts still firing
  • Memory profiling (before/after)
  • Performance benchmarks

Success Criteria

✅ All legacy metric storage removed
✅ Memory usage reduced by ~50-100MB
