Summary

PUT /api/codex-agent-roles/{role} had no way to clear a role's own reasoning-effort override. An omitted effort and JSON null both kept the existing model_reasoning_effort, so once a role was pinned to high it could only move to another level. This came up in review of #6907: the role table can't offer "Model default" for a pinned row until the API can write it.

Now an omitted effort still keeps the pin, a level still rewrites it, and null removes the root model_reasoning_effort line from the role TOML and reasoning from [codex].agents.<role> in omo.jsonc. That clears only the role-level override: Codex then resolves the effort the way it does for any role without one (explicit spawn value, [agents] default, then the parent), so a cleared role is not guaranteed to run at its model's own default. This is the role-file write only, separate from a session update where reasoning.effort: null resets a live session value.

Change

  • src/codex/agent-role-models.ts: writeCodexAgentRoleModel accepts null and drops the root line it locates with the same TOML-aware scan; a key under a table or inside the instructions string is untouched.
  • src/server/management/codex-agent-role-routes.ts: passes null through to the writer and as reasoning: null to the omo.jsonc mirror, which already removed reasoning for null. The response echoes effort: null.
  • structure/subagents.md and the docs-site integrations guide describe the three cases.

Clearing now preserves a BOM on the first key and refuses unsupported multiline effort values without altering the file. No GUI or CLI change. The role table can offer a clear choice on every row once this lands.

Verification

  • Final local head: 3ea7847d32ac2c3ff5ddff5d105f67a524db8ea9; contains dev 7af092ca4f78828238b425bf351d5989e237f89f via a non-force merge.
  • bun test tests/server/codex-agent-role-routes.test.ts tests/routing/codex-agent-role-models.test.ts tests/clients/omo-role-models.test.ts: 47 pass, 0 fail. BOM removal and multiline refusal regressions were driven red first (18 pass, 2 fail), then green.
  • bun run typecheck, bun run privacy:scan, bun run structure:check: exit 0. Layout/tooling/ratchet/Lab guards: 53 pass, 0 fail; final ratchet check after the writer fix: 9 pass, 0 fail.
  • cd docs-site && bun install --frozen-lockfile && bun run build: exit 0 (569 pages, 79,332 internal links).
  • OCX_TEST_NO_QUEUE=1 bun run test:changed: 7,911 pass, 32 skip, 1 fail across 342 files; the unchanged realtime stage-shutdown test failed under concurrent lane load. Its isolated PR-head rerun passed (1 pass); the same realtime case plus CLI lifecycle cases passed on unchanged dev (37 pass). This broader run is not claimed green.
  • Full bun run test was omitted under the AGENTS.md shared-resource exception: five lanes share this machine. Focused behavior and owning guards were run; hosted cross-platform CI is deferred by the owner to the final integrated dev tip.
  • Fresh independent Sol review at this exact SHA: PASS, no P0–P2 findings, including management authentication/origin, sibling refusal, traversal/regular-file checks, atomic write, mirror preservation and sanitized-error security lens.

  • I resolved all correct Codex and CodeRabbit findings.

  • My PR is ready for review.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Set a role’s effort to null to clear its effort override. Codex then resolves effort from an explicit spawn value, the [agents] default, or the parent session. Omitting effort preserves the role’s existing setting, while providing a level updates it.
  • Documentation
    • Updated integration and role-model guidance to explain how effort settings are preserved, changed, or cleared, and how Codex determines the effective effort.

Role updates now distinguish omitted, null, and string effort values. An explicit null removes the role’s TOML reasoning-effort setting, clears the corresponding omo setting, and appears as null in the update response.

Scoped review at current 9eadeca695f0711bd56dfcff3731c7685353f5e6: the API correctly distinguishes omitted effort, an explicit level and null; the writer removes the role-level key and the existing omo mirror removes its reasoning field. The new route test proves those file mutations, not the native child's effective effort.

Please correct the unconditional "model's default effort" claim in the description, integrations guide, structure contract and test name. Current official Codex subagent documentation resolves effort from explicit spawn values, [agents] defaults and then the parent before applying the role file; a custom file that sets only model preserves that resolved effort. For example, with a high [agents] default and a role model whose own default is medium, deleting the role pin does not itself guarantee medium.

The accurate contract here is "clear the role-level override; effective effort follows Codex's normal inheritance/resolution", unless an additional version-pinned native acceptance test establishes a stronger guarantee. Please distinguish this from the unrelated API session-update contract where reasoning.effort:null may explicitly reset a session value.

For #6907's eventual clear/default choice, keep omitted versus null intent in its mirror retry record so retries cannot restore the cleared pin. No native session, real CODEX_HOME or local executable test was used in this review. Existing exact-head CI and owner review remain separate; this COMMENT is not an approving review.

Thanks, that's right. The role write clears only the role-level override and promises nothing about what Codex resolves after that. Fixed in b084568: the integrations guide, the structure/subagents.md contract and the test name now say that null removes the role's own model_reasoning_effort (and the omo.jsonc reasoning), and that the effective effort then follows Codex's normal resolution (spawn value, [agents] default, then the parent) instead of a fixed model default. I updated the PR description the same way and noted that this is separate from a session update's reasoning.effort: null. The route test checks only the file changes, as you said. The omitted-versus-null intent for #6907's mirror retry is covered: as of 2b08275 that record stores the exact body that was sent.

Thanks, structure/clients/integrations.md did leave out the null case. Fixed in 401d492: the role-mirror contract now says an effort of JSON null removes reasoning along with the role file's model_reasoning_effort, and the other cases are worded as before. bun run structure:check passes.

Cover preservation of another selected-role setting.

The null-effort fixture contains only model and reasoning, and the assertion expects only model after clearing reasoning. A regression that reconstructs the selected role as { model } would pass this route test. The direct helper test has the same gap.

Add a non-reasoning role setting and assert that null removes only reasoning.

Follow-up at 401d492f62dd954d8ba920dbc4b62d511faac691: the documentation concern from my previous review is addressed. I checked the complete delta from 9eadeca6: the PR description, public integrations guide and subagent contract now say clear the role-level override, not “force the model's default”; structure/clients/integrations.md explicitly includes removal of the omo reasoning field for JSON null. The route-test name was corrected accordingly.

That delta contains documentation and the test-name correction, not another runtime implementation. I have not rerun unchanged code or claimed a native child's effective effort. Preserve omitted-versus-null intent in the eventual #6907 clear-choice/retry integration; the current #6907 model-only omission fix is a different contract.

This resolves my specific wording objection, not review readiness or approval. Current-head Cross-platform CI 38119105047, Catalog async contracts 38119105053 and React Doctor 38119105070 remain action_required, not passing execution. No workflow approval, scan, sponsorship, approving review or merge was performed.

Readiness follow-up: the same head is now Draft, 3/4, following CodeRabbit's newly published selected-role preservation test gap. I checked that observation: the null-effort route fixture includes only model and reasoning, so reconstructing the role as { model } would pass it. The current helper actually spreads entry before deleting only reasoning; this is a missing regression assertion, not a demonstrated current setting-loss bug. Please add a non-reasoning selected-role field to the route and helper fixtures, assert its preservation, validate and resolve the finding before reattesting. I have not resolved the conversation or waived the gate.

Thanks. The fixtures had only model and reasoning, so a helper that rebuilt the role as { model } on null would still have passed. Fixed in 68ac69e: the route test and the helper test now give the selected role an extra temperature setting and assert it survives every reasoning write, including null. To check that the new assertions can fail, I temporarily changed the helper to rebuild the role as { model } on null: both tests failed, and with the real helper restored, codex-agent-role-routes plus omo-role-models give 25 pass. No runtime code changed.

- PUT /api/codex-agent-roles/{role} treated null like an omitted effort and kept the pin; null now removes model_reasoning_effort and the omo.jsonc reasoning
- Codex resolves a role without its own effort from the spawn value, the [agents] default or the parent, so the docs, structure contract and test name no longer promise the model default
- structure/clients/integrations.md listed the reasoning cases without the null that removes it along with the role file's override
…nc settings

- The route and helper fixtures held only model and reasoning, so rebuilding the role as { model } on null would have passed

…ing effort (#6960)

Carries LilMGenius's LazyCodex role reasoning-effort series (#6909, #6908, #6907) onto dev as one change.

- The omo tab role table has an effort picker next to each model picker; Current shows "model · effort", and "Inherit effort" clears a pinned effort.
- PUT /api/codex-agent-roles/{role} keeps the pin when effort is omitted, sets it for a level, and with null removes the root model_reasoning_effort line and the omo.jsonc reasoning.
- Auto-assign proposes an effort for every sized role whose model has a non-empty ladder; --apply/Apply inserts or replaces it, and an empty ladder never clears a pin.

Maintainer fixes on top: refuse clearing a multiline effort (409 unsupported_model_value) and keep the BOM; keep a pending omo.jsonc mirror retry's effort across later saves and Apply; clear an unterminated last effort line in place; publish a confirmed save into the role store when the reload fails; docs and structure/subagents.md match the behavior.

Supersedes #6907, #6908 and #6909.

Superseded by #6960 (merged as 7258420), which carries #6907, #6908 and #6909 onto current dev as one change with a Co-authored-by trailer crediting @LilMGenius. Exact-head review on the carried head confirmed this PR's null-effort clear is fully carried, plus fixes for clearing a multiline value, keeping the BOM, and clearing an unterminated last line without touching the previous line terminator. Closing; thank you for the series.
