fix(live): join client-created voice calls as the caller that owns them - #6678
Conversation
ChatGPT voice can hand a live call to a Codex thread, and Codex Desktop creates the call itself when its renderer owns it. In both cases the WebRTC call is created with the caller's own ChatGPT login and only the V3 existingCall sideband join reaches opencodex. In Pool mode the join was re-authenticated with a Pool-selected account, so it reached the upstream as a different ChatGPT account and Codex reported 502 realtime websocket handshake failed. Record the call ids handleLive creates (extracted from the create Location the way openai/codex reads it) and, for a join to any other call, forward the caller's explicit ChatGPT credential through the Direct passthrough. Calls created through opencodex keep Pool selection and thread affinity (#35830).

| # Realtime voice: sideband joins for calls opencodex did not create | |||
|
|
|||
| ChatGPT voice ("GPT Live") can now hand a call to a Codex thread on the user's Mac: the ChatGPT client creates the WebRTC call with its own ChatGPT login, and the local Codex app-server joins the call's control sideband (`V3`, `transport=ExistingCall`). With opencodex injected, that join arrives at `ws://127.0.0.1:<port>/v1/live/<call_id>`, and opencodex re-authenticates it with whichever Pool account it selects. The join therefore reaches the upstream as an account other than the caller that started the call, and Codex reports `502 Bad Gateway: realtime websocket handshake failed` after five attempts. The credential overwrite is confirmed in source and in the user's ledger; that the upstream refused the join because of the account (rather than another handshake fault) is a strong inference, because Bun hides the upstream handshake status. | |||

Remove unreleased security triage from the tracked devlog
This tracked _plan document publishes the authentication weakness, failure mode, affected client versions, and runtime evidence while the credential-handling fix is still unreleased. Pushing the review branch therefore discloses pre-release security triage in permanent public history; keep these investigation details in .tmp/ and publish only an appropriate outcome after the fix ships.

Not applying this one. The defect fails closed: a join for a client-created call was re-authenticated with another of the user's own Pool accounts, and OpenAI refused it, so nothing was exposed or gained, only voice failed. This PR's diff already shows the old and new credential choice, which is the test AGENTS.md gives for whether a note may live in devlog/. The plan carries no account identifiers. Leaving the thread open for a maintainer decision.

Maintainer decision: keep the note. The fix and its description are already public in this PR, and the defect failed closed (the upstream refused the join; nothing was exposed), so the AGENTS.md test for devlog placement is met.

Summary
Voice through opencodex fails when the call was created by the client itself. In both cases the call is created with the user's own ChatGPT login and only its V3

existingCallvoice starts from the ChatGPT iOS remote client (1.2026.266 and 1.2026.267) on Oct 3 and Oct 5, twenty 502 rows inusage.jsonl, joined under two different Pool accounts, neither of which is the ChatGPT account of the Codex login that issued the join. The last voice session that completed its handshake (Sep 30) was a call opencodex created itself, where create and join share one Pool account.After this change:
POST /v1/live//v1/realtime/calls, extracted from the create Location exactly as openai/codex reads it. Joins for those calls keep Pool selection and thread affinity (openai/codex #35830, unchanged)./v1/live/<id>,/v1/realtime/calls/<id>,/v1/realtime?call_id=<id>) forwards the caller's own explicit ChatGPT credential through the existing Direct passthrough: bearer claim must matchchatgpt-account-id, never the proxy admission secret, same matched-main hard-lock and credits policy, no Pool outcome recorded.
