Summary

Removes the last few instances of automatic task file generation that were missed in the initial cleanup, completing the transition to on-demand file generation.

Changes Made

  • scripts/modules/task-manager/add-subtask.js: Changed default generateFiles parameter from true to false
  • scripts/modules/task-manager/remove-task.js: Commented out automatic generateTaskFiles() call after task removal operations

Context

Task file generation was previously made optional to improve performance and give users control over when individual task files are created. However, a few automatic generation calls remained in the codebase that were missed during the initial refactor.

This PR completes that cleanup by ensuring:

  • Task operations focus solely on data manipulation without file generation overhead
  • All task file generation happens only when explicitly requested via taskmaster generate
  • Consistent behavior across all task management operations

Impact

  • Improved performance for add-subtask and remove-task operations
  • Consistent on-demand file generation behavior throughout the application
  • No breaking changes - users can still generate task files manually when needed

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Updated task and subtask commands to require explicit confirmation for regenerating task files using a new --generate flag.
    • Disabled automatic regeneration of task files by default after adding or removing tasks and subtasks.
    • Improved consistency and clarity in command-line options and related documentation regarding task file generation behavior.

Walkthrough

The changes revise the default behavior and CLI options related to automatic regeneration of task files after adding or removing subtasks or tasks. The default for regenerating files after adding or removing subtasks is now disabled unless explicitly enabled. The regeneration after task removal is fully disabled by commenting out the code. Corresponding CLI flags and documentation were updated to use a positive --generate flag instead of --skip-generate. A changeset file records these updates.

.cursor/rules/*.mdc: Cursor rule files must follow the required structure: a YAML frontmatter block with description, globs, and alwaysApply fields, followed by main points in bold, sub-points, and examples/explanations in markdown.
When referencing files in Cursor rule files, use the format filename or filename.
When including code examples in Cursor rule files, use language-specific code blocks and clearly mark DO and DON'T examples.
Cursor rules should start with a high-level overview, include specific actionable requirements, show examples of correct implementation, reference existing code when possible, and keep rules DRY by referencing other rules.
Maintain Cursor rule files by updating them when new patterns emerge, adding examples from the actual codebase, removing outdated patterns, and cross-referencing related rules.
Use bullet points for clarity, keep descriptions concise, include both DO and DON'T examples, reference actual code over theoretical examples, and use consistent formatting across rules.

Update relevant '.cursor/rules/*.mdc' files and include tagged system considerations in architecture docs when adding new features.

548-557: Consistent with add-subtask, yet global guideline still out-of-date

Same inconsistency noted above applies to the remove-subtask command description. Make sure the global docs no longer mention skipGenerate.

636-641: Example quoting fixed – LGTM

Switching from ANSI-C $'...' quoting to standard double-quoted string greatly improves readability.

1-6: LGTM! Changeset properly documents the performance improvement.

The changeset correctly identifies this as a patch-level change and provides a clear, user-facing description of the cleanup. This aligns well with the PR objective to complete the transition to on-demand task file generation.

Consider adding a trailing newline to address the static analysis hint:

📄 CodeRabbit Inference Engine (.cursor/rules/changeset.mdc)

.changeset/*.md: When running npm run changeset or npx changeset add, provide a concise summary of the changes for the CHANGELOG.md in imperative mood, typically a single line, and not a detailed Git commit message.
The changeset summary should be user-facing, describing what changed in the released version that is relevant to users or consumers of the package.
Do not use your detailed Git commit message body as the changeset summary.

📄 CodeRabbit Inference Engine (.cursor/rules/ai_services.mdc)

scripts/modules/task-manager/*.js: Centralize all LLM calls through generateTextService or generateObjectService.
Do not import or call anything from the old ai-services.js, ai-client-factory.js, or ai-client-utils.js files.
Do not initialize AI clients (Anthropic, Perplexity, etc.) directly within core logic (task-manager/) or MCP direct functions.
Do not fetch AI-specific parameters (model ID, max tokens, temp) using config-manager.js getters for the AI call. Pass the role instead.
Do not implement fallback or retry logic outside ai-services-unified.js.
Do not handle API key resolution outside the service layer (it uses utils.js internally).
Determine the appropriate role (main, research, fallback) in your core logic and pass it to the service.
Pass the session object (received in the context parameter, especially from direct function wrappers) to the service call when in MCP context.
Use generateTextService and implement robust manual JSON parsing (with Zod validation after parsing) when structured output is needed, as generateObjectService has shown unreliability with some providers/schemas.
Be aware of potential reliability issues with generateObjectService across different providers and complex schemas. Prefer generateTextService + manual parsing as a more robust alternative for structured data needs.

Files in scripts/modules/task-manager/ should each handle a specific action related to task management (e.g., add-task.js, expand-task.js), supporting the tagged task lists system and backward compatibility.

scripts/modules/task-manager/*: All core functions in scripts/modules/task-manager/ must accept a context parameter and use it to extract projectRoot and tag
All core functions in scripts/modules/task-manager/ must use readJSON(tasksPath, projectRoot, tag) and writeJSON(tasksPath, data, projectRoot, tag)

📄 CodeRabbit Inference Engine (.cursor/rules/telemetry.mdc)

scripts/modules/task-manager/**/*.js: Functions in scripts/modules/task-manager/ that invoke AI services must call the appropriate AI service function (e.g., generateObjectService), passing commandName and outputType in the params object.
Core logic functions in scripts/modules/task-manager/ must return an object that includes aiServiceResponse.telemetryData.
If the core logic function handles CLI output (outputFormat === 'text' or 'cli'), and aiServiceResponse.telemetryData is available, it must call displayAiUsageSummary(aiServiceResponse.telemetryData, 'cli') from scripts/modules/ui.js.

Do not call AI-specific getters (like getMainModelId, getMainMaxTokens) from core logic functions in scripts/modules/task-manager/*; instead, pass the role to the unified AI service.

**/*.js: Declare and initialize global variables at the top of modules to avoid hoisting issues.
Use proper function declarations to avoid hoisting issues and initialize variables before they are referenced.
Do not reference variables before their declaration in module scope.
Use dynamic imports (import()) to avoid initialization order issues in modules.

24-24: Excellent change that improves performance while maintaining flexibility.

Changing the default generateFiles parameter from true to false successfully implements the on-demand file generation approach. Users retain full control by explicitly passing true when file generation is needed, while the default behavior now avoids unnecessary overhead.

526-537: --generate flag contradicts earlier --skip-generate guideline & example code

The new --generate flag is a welcome change, but the rest of the rule file still:

  1. Endorses --skip-generate in the “Boolean Flag Conventions” section (lines 186-197).
  2. Shows example logic that relies on options.skipGenerate (lines 135-146).

The mixed guidance will confuse contributors and may lead to copy-pasted code that fails at runtime (options.skipGenerate is undefined).

Proposed fix (update doc examples, keep the new flag):

@@
- // ✅ DO: Regenerate task files after destructive operations
-  if (!options.skipGenerate) {
+ // ✅ DO: Regenerate task files after destructive operations
+  if (options.generate) {
@@
- - ✅ DO: Use positive flags with `--skip-` prefix for disabling behavior
+ - ✅ DO: Use positive flags to *enable* optional behaviour (e.g. `--generate`)
+ - ✅ DO: Use `--skip-foo` only when *disabling* something that is *on* by default
@@
- .option('--skip-generate', 'Skip generating task files')
+ .option('--generate', 'Regenerate task files')
@@
-  const generateFiles = !options.skipGenerate;
+  const generateFiles = options.generate;

This keeps the new opt-in design while ensuring all guidance & snippets stay coherent.

548-556: Same inconsistency for remove-subtask command

The remove-subtask section now documents --generate, but earlier code examples still rely on skipGenerate. Once the primary section above is addressed, replicate the same changes here (variable name, option description, help text).

655-660: Remove-subtask help suffers from the same $'...' quoting issue

If you adopt the previous nit-pick, align this example too for consistency.

Each module in scripts/modules/ should be focused on a single responsibility, following the modular architecture (e.g., commands.js for CLI command handling, task-manager.js for task data and core logic, dependency-manager.js for dependency management, ui.js for CLI output formatting, ai-services-unified.js for AI service integration, config-manager.js for configuration management, utils.js for utility functions).

scripts/modules/*.js: Export all core functions, helper functions, and utility methods needed by your new function or command from their respective modules. Explicitly review the module's export block to ensure every required dependency is included.
Pass all required parameters to functions you call within your implementation and verify that direct function parameters match their core function counterparts.
Use consistent file naming conventions: 'task_${id.toString().padStart(3, '0')}.txt', use path.join for composing file paths, and use appropriate file extensions (.txt for tasks, .json for data).
Use structured error objects with code and message properties, include clear error messages, and handle both function-specific and file system errors.
Import all silent mode utilities together from 'scripts/modules/utils.js' and always use isSilentMode() to check global silent mode status. Wrap core function calls within direct functions using enableSilentMode() and disableSilentMode() in a try/finally block if the core function might produce console output.
Core functions should check outputFormat === 'text' before displaying UI elements and use internal logging that respects silent mode.
Design functions to accept dependencies as parameters (dependency injection) and avoid hard-coded dependencies that are difficult to mock.
Keep pure logic separate from I/O operations or UI rendering to allow testing the logic without mocking complex dependencies.

.cursor/rules/*.mdc: Cursor rule files must follow the required structure: a YAML frontmatter block with description, globs, and alwaysApply fields, followed by main points in bold, sub-points, and examples/explanations in markdown.

🔇 Additional comments (8)
.cursor/rules/taskmaster.mdc (1)

161-161: LGTM! Documentation correctly reflects the behavior change.

The update from skipGenerate to generate option aligns with the PR objective to move from negative to positive logic for task file generation control. This change makes the CLI more intuitive by requiring explicit opt-in for file generation rather than opt-out.

Also applies to: 289-289

scripts/modules/task-manager/remove-subtask.js (2)

20-20: LGTM! Correctly implements on-demand task file generation.

Changing the default from true to false aligns with the PR objective to make task file generation opt-in rather than automatic, improving performance and user control.

114-114: LGTM! Enables conditional file generation when requested.

Uncommenting the generateTaskFiles call ensures that file generation occurs when explicitly requested via the generateFiles parameter, completing the implementation of on-demand generation.

assets/rules/taskmaster.mdc (1)

160-160: LGTM! Consistent documentation updates across multiple rule files.

These changes mirror the updates in .cursor/rules/taskmaster.mdc, ensuring documentation consistency across different rule directories. The shift from skipGenerate to generate option correctly documents the new positive logic for task file generation control.

Also applies to: 288-288

scripts/modules/commands.js (4)

2657-2657: LGTM! Improved CLI semantics with positive flag.

The change from --skip-generate to --generate improves the user experience by using positive logic and making file generation explicitly opt-in rather than default. This aligns well with the PR objective of cleaning up automatic task file generation.

2668-2668: Correct implementation of opt-in logic.

The logic change from !options.skipGenerate to options.generate || false correctly implements the new opt-in behavior for file generation. The explicit || false default is good defensive programming.

2841-2841: Consistent implementation across remove-subtask command.

The changes to the remove-subtask command mirror the add-subtask command changes perfectly:

  • Positive --generate flag instead of negative --skip-generate
  • Correct opt-in logic with options.generate || false

This consistency ensures a uniform user experience across related commands.

Also applies to: 2852-2852

2818-2818: Proper documentation update for the new flag.

The help text correctly updates to show the new --generate option with an accurate description. This documentation update is essential for users to understand the new opt-in behavior for file generation.
