Web client: transcript zoom gap, command redaction, plain scene, -84% boot payload - #1561
Conversation
The working indicator built its "Running <command>" label by cutting the raw command to 72 characters, so a key in the command reached the screen, and a key sliced at the cut still showed its `sk-ant-` prefix. The renderer is shared, so desktop and the web client both leaked. New shared/secretRedaction.ts: `redactCommandLine` masks provider keys by prefix, Authorization/Bearer values, URL credentials, PEM blocks, and secret-named assignments and flags in command lines; `oneLineRedacted` redacts before it flattens and truncates. Command-only: code, diffs and Edit/Write content are never passed through it, and main/utils/redaction.ts is unchanged for its existing callers. Applied to: the working-indicator label, command rows, tool target headers, the shell `command`/`cmd` field in expanded tool bodies (ChatWorkLogBlock too), approval detail, subagent rows, the `ade code` TUI `run` line, and three host-side strings that reach the Work row and sync clients (approval headline, background-task title and summary). iOS shows the raw command too (WorkActivityIndicator.swift summarizeCommand, WorkStatusAndFormattingHelpers.swift workToolArgPreview); not changed here. The hosted web client applies display zoom with `body { zoom }`.
getBoundingClientRect() then returns zoomed screen pixels, while scrollTop,
offsetHeight, clientHeight and the stored row heights are layout pixels.
MeasuredEventRow stored max(offsetHeight, rect.height), so at 110% every row
was recorded 10% too tall. Over a long turn the virtual list's height overshot
by more than a screen: a blank band above the working indicator, the indicator
far below the latest output, and a pinned reader left 120-230px above the real
bottom, past the stick threshold, so Jump To Latest showed with no scrolling.
lib/webZoom.ts gains toLayoutPx(), which divides by the factor
applyHostedWebZoom already stored (no layout read). Every rect length or rect
difference that the list mixes with layout values goes through it: row
measurement, row-top readers, list-root and content-column boxes. At factor 1,
and in Electron (webFrame zoom), it is the identity, so desktop is unchanged.
Measured in the browser mock (last row to indicator, pinned):
110%: 122px -> 43px; 125%: 234px -> 47px; stick holds, no pill.

Clone locally clones onto "this machine", which the hosted web client does not have. The project menu already hid it with !webMode; the top-bar pill did not. The pill and the palette's Clone from GitHub entry are now desktop-only. On desktop the pill still shows only for a remote project with no local checkout. The web client defaulted to the desktop's shuffle scene, so every load fetched a wallpaper picture, sampled its palette and painted it behind the top bar. New scene mode `plain`: the theme's flat CSS background with no picture and no WebGL mesh. It is the web default, chosen when preferences are read (scene preferences live in this origin's localStorage and do not sync to desktop), and nothing new is persisted. An untouched shuffle default the web client saved earlier reads as plain; any pick the user makes sets `choiceMade`, so a deliberate Shuffle stands. Desktop's default is unchanged; Appearance gains a Plain card on both. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A cold signed-out load of the hosted client transferred 9.4 MB across 122 requests to show the sign-in card. Two causes: - history/TimelineListView looked icons up by name on `import * as PhosphorIcons`, which keeps the entire @phosphor-icons/react library (4.9 MB, every icon in every weight) in one shared chunk that every icon-using component, the gate included, depends on. It now uses an explicit map (history/eventIcons.ts) with a CircleDashed fallback. Two taxonomy names that Phosphor 2.1.10 does not export (ArchiveBox, Webhook) rendered a dot; they map to Archive and WebhooksLogo. Desktop's renderer sheds the same chunk. - WebClientRoot awaited the App graph (App, chatCardPrimitives, ProviderLogos, appStore, federated adapter) before painting, because the sign-in card lived inside App's LaunchGate. A signed-out boot now installs only window.ade.account and renders a lazy WebSignInScreen (WebSignInGate + GateBackdrop, ThemeDocumentSync moved out of App). Account privacy pruning still runs first. When a refresh session is stored, the workspace modules start downloading alongside bootstrap(), so a signed-in reload does not wait longer. The desktop gate path is unchanged. Cold signed-out load (bench:webclient, median of 3): 122 -> 47 requests, 9,403 KB -> 1,552 KB transferred, JS 8,455 KB -> 736 KB. webClientShell.test.tsx: 10 tests fail on purpose (stub account client lacks hasPersistedSession; 7 expect a signed-out visitor to mount App) - left for /test. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
apps/desktop/scripts/bench-webclient.mjs drives Chrome over CDP with no new dependencies. Sections, each repeated --runs times (median, min-max, every run): - bundle: builds the web client and reports entry HTML, eager JS (raw/gzip), total JS/CSS, chunk counts and the largest chunks (reuses the entry graph from check-webclient-entry.mjs, which now exports readWebclientEntryGraph and checkWebclientEntry and still runs as the build guard). - load: cold start of dist/web-client from a local static server: FCP, React mount, signed-out gate visible, requests and bytes by type, largest transfers, long tasks, heap after GC. - chat: the shared renderer in the desktop browser mock, replaying a real transcript through scripts/perf-chat-stream.mjs (now also reports openToFirstRowsMs): open-to-first-rows, per-event script/style/layout, React commits and DOM mutations per streamed event, frame pacing, and composer keystroke-to-paint latency idle and while streaming (real click focus, Input.insertText). --root/--compare run two trees interleaved in one session with the load average recorded per run, so before/after numbers come from the same harness and conditions. The signed-in hosted client over Relay is not automated. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Every poll in the web adapter is a relay round-trip to the user's machine. - Cursor fleet (ai.cursorCloudFleet, up to 100 rows) polled every 2 s while any listener existed. It now backs off 2 -> 4 -> 8 -> 15 s after three identical snapshots and resets on a change, on the tab becoming visible, and after any fleet-changing action. - App Control status polled every 3 s while a listener existed; same backoff to 15 s while the session is unchanged. The panel's own getStatus resets it. - The OAuth status drain polled every 1 s until a terminal state or a 21-minute deadline, so a cancelled flow (and every Pi cancel, which has no cancelled state) kept polling. It now drops to 5 s after a quiet minute, and cancel ends it after one final drain. All three pause while the page is hidden and read at once when it is visible again (infra/pageVisibility.ts; with no document, e.g. Node, the page counts as visible). Adapter-level command counts per minute (fake timers, 60 s windows): fleet 30 -> 7 visible, 30 -> 0 hidden; App Control 20 -> 7 visible, 20 -> 0 hidden; OAuth 300 -> 108 over five minutes, 60 -> 0 after cancel. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ants web-client/README: the signed-out boot renders WebSignInScreen without the App graph (appStore still in it) and preloads the workspace for a stored session, with the measured cold-load numbers; relay poller pacing, hidden-tab pause and OAuth cancel; App Control on web is watch-only (two stale lines said it was unavailable); pageVisibility.ts and appControl.ts entries; runtime_processes heartbeats are local-only and never produce an invalidation. visual-language and onboarding-and-settings: the `plain` scene mode and the web client's plain default. chat/README fragile wiring: transcript measurement in layout pixels under web zoom (toLayoutPx), and command text redacted before truncation. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… event AgentChatPane re-derived every subagent snapshot from the whole transcript on each streamed event (deriveChatSubagentSnapshots, ~117 ms per 400 events in the dev profile). The derivation reads only subagent lifecycle events (normalizeSubagentLifecycleEvent; everything else is skipped), so when the new events array is the previous one plus events with no lifecycle event, the previous result is exactly what a full pass returns. deriveChatSubagentSnapshotsIncremental checks the prefix by element identity and the tail with the same normalizer; a trim, reorder, rewritten event or new lifecycle event takes the full path. Snapshots also keep their identity, so subagent cards are not handed a new array per delta. Streaming bench (11,685-event transcript, 400 events at 30/s, dev server, 5 interleaved pairs vs HEAD): script ms per event 12.8 [12.7-14.8] -> 11.7 [11.4-12.2], lower in every pair; task ms 18.9 -> 17.6; style/layout 469/200 -> 432/183 ms. React commits per event unchanged at 2.2. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Problem
In the hosted web client, a chat transcript showed a large blank area and a "Jump To Latest" pill while an agent was working. The working indicator also sat far below the latest output.
The working line rendered raw commands, including API keys. "Clone locally" appeared even though the web client has no local disk. The web client opened on a wallpaper scene instead of ADE's theme. The client felt slow.
Cause
body { zoom }. The transcript's virtual window measured rows withgetBoundingClientRect(zoomed pixels) but scrolled in layout pixels. At 110% every row counted 10% too tall.import * as Icons from "@phosphor-icons/react", which pulled the whole 4.9 MB icon library into the entry graph.Change and boundary

Boot.

Streaming. Subagent snapshots are derived incrementally, so a streamed delta with no lifecycle event reuses the previous snapshots.
Bench.
npm run bench:webclientruns a CDP headless Chrome with an interleaved A/B (--root/--compare).Not changed. iOS still shows raw commands (WorkActivityIndicator.swift:383, WorkStatusAndFormattingHelpers.swift:427 and :1773). That and the remaining perf areas are tracked in ADE-175.

Streaming script time went from 12.8 to 11.7 ms per event.

Note
Medium Risk
Touches display-time secret handling and hosted sign-in/boot paths; redaction is display-only but mistakes could hide needed context or miss leaks; polling and session-restore timing affect background relay traffic.
Overview
This PR hardens command display and improves hosted web client load and behavior.
Secret masking adds shared
redactCommandLine/oneLineRedactedand shell-toolmaskShellCommandArgs, applied before truncation across chat (working line, tool rows, approvals, work log, background jobs), the main-process approval/background summaries, theadeTUI, and iOS work activity. Localhost terminal drafts skip runnable commands when masking would leave<redacted>in the string. Edit/diff/prompt content is not redacted.Hosted web fixes transcript virtualization under body zoom by converting rect measurements to layout pixels via
toLayoutPx. Signed-out boot usesAppearanceRoot+WebSignInScreenso theme/motion match the app; history stops importing the full Phosphor namespace viaeventIcons.ts. Default scene is Plain on web (user choices persist viachoiceMade); clone-from-GitHub UI is hidden where there is no local disk.Relay polling for fleet, App Control, and quiet OAuth drains uses a shared backoff poller that pauses hidden tabs and resumes with an immediate read. Subagent snapshots reuse prior derivation when streamed events have no lifecycle changes.
Tooling:
npm run bench:webclientadds a CDP benchmark harness;check-webclient-entryexports graph reading for reuse.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit 4631853. Configure here.
