HOW TO: Configure the Network Meter to monitor a VPN connection or a virtual network interface

If you need to monitor a virtual network adapter, the recommended approach is to create a copy of the Gadget suite in a separate folder, as follows:

  1. Navigate to your Rainmeter installation folder, typically C:\Users\<username>\Documents\Rainmeter\Skins.
  2. In the Skins folder, create a new folder to hold a duplicate Gadgets suite; for example, Gadgets (VPN).
  3. Copy the @Resources, Settings, and Network Meter subfolders from the main Gadgets folder into your new folder.
  4. Right-click the Rainmeter icon in the system tray and select the Refresh all option to refresh Rainmeter.
  5. Right-click the Rainmeter icon in the system tray and select Skins > Gadgets (VPN) > Network Meter > Network Meter.ini.
  6. From the Network Meter, click the wrench icon to open Network Meter Settings.
  7. IMPORTANT: Ensure your VPN adapter or other virtual adapter is active.
  8. Click the List my network adapters option to display your available network interfaces. Copy the name of your virtual adapter into the Ethernet Interface text box. Leave all other interface text boxes blank.

FAQ:
Q: Why do I need to create a duplicate gadget? Can't I just monitor my virtual adapter along with all the others?
A: Virtual adapters are software that use a physical adapter to do their work. As a result, if you try monitoring your VPN along with your physical network connection, all your statistics will be doubled (due to being counted twice).
