Fixes #26
Part of #80 (a flashlight toggle and the night-time thresholds need a device)

Base: t3/ios-mvf (merged in up to d9abb8e; f14947e brought the base's coachingHidesReply, which this head builds against)

What changed

Gate coaching no longer flickers in the dark

During the wall walk, the capture gate gives one skip reason per frame: the first check that fails. ScanEngine.walkCoaching debounced that reason by time alone and restarted its clock whenever the reason changed. In the 4.1 night runs the frames' mean luma sat on the gate's 40, and a tilt turned "too dark" into "moving" because motion is checked before exposure. The dark card replaced the task, went away and came back every few seconds.

A new HouseScanKit type, CoachingDebouncer, now turns the per-frame verdicts into coaching:

  • It judges darkness from each measured frame's own luma, not from the gate's reason, with hysteresis. The coaching shows once more than half the frames of the last 2 s are under 40. It clears only once fewer than a fifth are, and every frame has stayed above 48 for 1.5 s.
  • Moving fast, turning fast and blur each keep their own clock. A frame that reports a different problem never restarts a problem that is already showing.
  • Darkness comes first, so a tilt in the dark no longer swaps the card.
  • After about 20 s of mostly dark frames, the card says once: "It's too dark to measure here. Try in daylight."

Every threshold is a named constant in CoachingDebouncer.Config and documented as a guess.

"Slow down" is only for walking (#26)

AutoCapture.evaluate put speed over 1.5 m/s and rotation over 60°/s into one .moving reason, so a normal tilt read as walking too fast. SkipReason.moving is now .movingFast and .turningFast, and speed is still checked first. Turning shows "Turn more slowly".

"Slow down" is not said on aim, tilt, step-back, see-behind, mark-the-end or marking steps, during the end and overhead questions, or on a gap request that asks the homeowner to stand and aim. Two steps ask for walking and still say it:

  • a gap request to walk the stretch far enough out (walkOut, "Walk along this stretch... Follow the dotted line"). GapPlan.Need.asksToWalk in HouseScanKit decides this, with a package test.
  • the corner step ("walk round it, aim at the next wall and mark it"). The mark itself runs as marking, which counts as aiming.

Moving fast while aiming builds no walking-speed spell either, so the first frames of the next walking step can't open with "Slow down".

Blur shows only after 2 s, up from the base's 0.7 s, because the gate's blur test also trips when a tilt changes the view. On its own that would turn blur coaching off: the gate compares a frame with the median of the last 15 measured frames, so after about 8 blurry frames in a row the median is blurry too and the next frame passes, and the gate's spell ends in under a second. So the debouncer also judges each frame's own sharpness against the median sharpness of the 1.5 s before the blur began, held fixed while the blur lasts, at the gate's own ratio (under half counts as blurry). Steady blur now shows from 2 s in ("Hold steady" while aiming, "Slow down" while walking) and clears 0.5 s after the photos are sharp again, and a drop that lasts less than 2 s still says nothing. CoachingDebouncerTests.sustainedBlurThroughTheGateIsCoached runs the real AutoCapture gate into the debouncer: 3 s sharp, 4 s at under a third of that, then sharp again. The gate stops calling the blur blurry after 0.8 s, and the coaching still says blur from 2 s in until it's sharp.

The task card stays under gate coaching

WallWalkScreen.instruction used to replace the task with any coaching. Now the gate's coaching (slow down, turn more slowly, hold steady, too dark, too dark to measure) and "needs texture" keep the task: its title and its own second line both stay, the coaching's title goes on a line of its own under them, and its symbol shows on the card. Tracking problems (initializing, relocalizing, lost) and "past the end of the wall" still replace the card, because nothing the task asks for counts until they clear. The base's coachingHidesReply (f14947e) uses the same four cases to hide the reply. This PR adds turnSlowly and tooDarkToMeasure to its keep-the-reply arm, with no default, so the next new case is a compile error again.

The task's second line has to stay: on aim steps it is the only thing that says where to aim ("The strip along the wall, at your meter.", "At your meter.", the stretch for a tilt up, "tap Wall ends here"), and the dark coaching can now stay up for a whole night walk. Only the coaching's title rides along ("It's dark here.", "Turn more slowly."), so the card grows by one short line. The full coaching copy below is what shows when coaching replaces the card.

The replace-or-ride-along rule (ScanCopy.coachingReplacesTask) and the ride-along copy (ScanCopy.withCoaching) live in ScanCopy, so the walk and the gap request share them.

Two follow-ons from the review:

  • A refusal on the task (the next wall wasn't marked, the wall is too short) keeps its red triangle when ride-along coaching is up, since the refusal's words are on the card. Coaching that replaces the card still shows its own symbol.
  • With the mark tray open, "Turn more slowly" and "Hold steady" are hidden as "Slow down" already was: turning the phone to pick a mark is not a problem ("Slow down" shows while standing still to mark something #26, run 1).

The gap request stays under gate coaching

walk() also runs during a gap request, so the sticky dark coaching carries into it. GapRequestScreen.instruction replaced the request with any coaching, so at night (run 3, 1:42-1:45) the request and "Got it, thanks" would have been hidden for the whole request. It now works as the walk does: tracking problems and past-the-end replace the request, and gate coaching rides along under ScanCopy.gap(gap) with its symbol as the card's tone. Once the view is in, gate coaching no longer shows, so "Got it, thanks" reads as it did. This is unit U9's file: U9's owner, please confirm the change is OK.

Copy

  • Too dark: "It's dark here" / "Some photos won't count. Try your phone's flashlight, or come back in daylight." The old copy said "see the wall" and "Turn on a porch light" whatever the task.
  • New: "Turn more slowly" / "Photos taken while turning come out blurred."
  • New: "It's too dark to measure here" / "Try in daylight."
  • Riding along under a task, gate coaching adds only its title, except the dark coaching, which keeps what helps: "It's dark here. Try your phone's flashlight, or come back in daylight." and "It's too dark to measure here. Try in daylight."

Why

The dark card and "Slow down" hid the step the homeowner was on, and "Slow down" showed while they stood still and tilted. Most of each 4.1 walk is tilt steps (#77), so both problems showed up often. Making the debouncer a value type in HouseScanKit lets the macOS package tests cover the timing without ARKit.

UI changes

Under gate coaching, the walk card and the gap request card now show the task's title and second line with the coaching's title on a third line, instead of the coaching alone. No captures: this machine has no Xcode or Simulator. CI's UI tests attach screenshots of the wallWalk-tooDark, wallWalk-turnSlowly and gapRequest-tooDark states only when the full every-state audit runs.

Verification

Run here (Windows, no Swift toolchain):

  • I ported CoachingDebouncer line for line to Python and ran every CoachingDebouncerTests scenario through it. All gave the results the Swift tests expect: luma swinging 40 ± 6 for 30 s shows once and clears once; a tooDark/movingFast flip shows "too dark" within 0.4 s and holds it; a 1.8 s blur spell says nothing; "Slow down" is suppressed while aiming; persistent dark is said once per scan. This checks the logic, not that the Swift compiles.
  • A trial merge of the old head into the base failed to compile on coachingHidesReply's exhaustive switch. This head merges t3/ios-mvf (f14947e) and fixes that switch. I re-read every switch on Coaching, GuidanceStep and GapPlan.Need in the merged tree for exhaustiveness, and every call site of the moved replacesTask/withCoaching.
  • No server files changed, so I didn't run the server checks.

Only CI can verify:

  • swift test --package-path ios/HouseScanKit -Xswiftc -warnings-as-errors: new CoachingDebouncerTests (including aWalkOutRequestStillSaysSlowDown), and AutoCaptureTests for a pure 90°/s turn (turningFast), a 2 m/s walk (movingFast), both at once (movingFast) and a slow 40°/s turn (kept).
  • The app build of the merged head.
  • The UI tests testGateCoachingKeepsTheTaskOnTheCard (the demo walk with -uiDemoCoaching tooDark shows "Walk slowly to your right", "Keep the wall and the ground in view" and "It's dark here") and testGateCoachingKeepsTheGapRequestOnTheCard (the demo gap request shows "Show the ground", its second line and "It's dark here"). Both read the card once from a snapshot, as the base's "Can't get there" during the walk can put the wall's end at the meter, and the rest of the walk is dropped #24 fix requires.
  • The every-state audit, with the new wallWalk-tooDark, wallWalk-turnSlowly and gapRequest-tooDark states and text expectations, runs only with the full-ui label.

Only a device can verify:

  • The thresholds (40/48 luma, the 50% and 20% shares, 1.5 s, 20 s, 0.7 s, 2 s). They need a night run on a phone (unit U16).
  • Whether a tilt at 10 Hz still trips turningFast often enough to be noisy.
  • Whether the three-line card reads well at the largest text sizes. The audit states for the new coaching don't run at AX5.

Files touched

  • ios/HouseScanKit/Sources/HouseScanKit/Capture/AutoCapture.swift: split SkipReason.moving.
  • ios/HouseScanKit/Sources/HouseScanKit/Guidance/CoachingDebouncer.swift (new), with GapPlan.Need.asksToWalk.
  • ios/HouseScanKit/Tests/HouseScanKitTests/AutoCaptureTests.swift, CoachingDebouncerTests.swift (new).
  • ios/HouseScan/Runtime/ScanEngine.swift: walkCoaching, isAiming, coaching(for:aiming:), coaching(for:skip:), and the debouncer reset in both reset paths.
  • ios/HouseScan/Contract/ScanContract.swift: Coaching.turnSlowly and .tooDarkToMeasure.
  • ios/HouseScan/UI/Copy/ScanCopy.swift: coaching copy, symbols, coachingNote, coachingReplacesTask and withCoaching.
  • ios/HouseScan/UI/Screens/WallWalkScreen.swift: instruction, tone (refusal over ride-along coaching), the tray-open filter in coaching, and the two new cases in coachingHidesReply. reply and InstructionCard are untouched.
  • ios/HouseScan/UI/Screens/GapRequestScreen.swift (U9's file): instruction, tone and a coaching filter.
  • ios/HouseScan/UI/Preview/DemoEngine.swift, UIDemo.swift: demo arguments for the new cases.
  • ios/HouseScanUITests/ScreenStatesUITests.swift: the two tests and the new states.

Dependencies

Risk

  • Blur coaching changes from the base. The base said "Slow down" after 0.7 s of the gate's blurry verdicts, which the gate's adapting median usually cut off within a second. This PR shows blur after 2 s and holds it against the sharpness from before the blur. Unmeasured on a phone: looking for more than 2 s at a much plainer surface than the one just before (sky, a smooth wall after grass) also reads as a big drop in sharpness, and would say "Hold steady" or "Slow down" until the view is textured again. Check it on the device run (U16).
  • The dark coaching now counts only frames with their own luma. On the phone, every frame the walk judges is measured (one in six camera frames, about 10 a second). In a replay, frames without a photo carry no luma and don't count. Before, the gate reused the last measured luma for those frames.
  • "Turn more slowly" replaces "Slow down" on aim steps. Someone who really is walking fast during an aim or tilt step won't be told to slow down. Walk-out requests and the corner step still say it.
  • .limited(.excessiveMotion) from ARKit still says "Slow down" at once, whatever the step, as before.

Checklist

  • The scope is focused; related changes belong together
  • I explained what changed and why
  • N/A before/after images: no Xcode or Simulator on this machine; CI's UI tests attach the new states
  • N/A video: coaching timing depends on live frames, and a device run is planned (U16)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Scan guidance now distinguishes moving too quickly from turning too quickly, and can provide separate advice for prolonged darkness.
    • Photo-quality coaching can appear alongside the current task, with guidance to hold steady, slow down, or use a flashlight or return in daylight.
  • Improvements
    • Coaching is timed to avoid reacting to brief capture issues and adjusts to whether you’re aiming or walking.
    • Guidance remains visible alongside walk and gap-request tasks when appropriate.

…ays "Turn more slowly" for turns

The walk's capture-gate coaching was debounced by time only and restarted its
clock whenever the gate's per-frame reason changed. At night the kept frames'
luma sat on the gate's 40, and a tilt swapped "too dark" for "moving", so the
card replaced the task and came back every few seconds (#80). Turning the
phone in place also read as walking too fast (#26).

- AutoCapture splits SkipReason.moving into movingFast and turningFast.
- New HouseScanKit CoachingDebouncer: each problem keeps its own clock;
darkness comes from the frames' luma with hysteresis (on above 50% dark
frames in 2 s, off below 20% and above 48 luma for 1.5 s), and after about
  20 s of mostly dark frames it says once that it's too dark to measure;
"Slow down" is not said on aim, tilt, step-back, see-behind or marking
steps; blur shows after 2 s. Thresholds are guesses for a night run.
- ScanEngine.walkCoaching feeds it the gate reason and the frame's luma. The
tracking coaching and the past-the-end debounce are unchanged.
- WallWalkScreen keeps the task title for gate coaching and puts the coaching
on the second line with its symbol; tracking problems and past-the-end
  still replace the card.
- New copy for too dark, too dark to measure and turn more slowly.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is scan-local guidance and shared package callers. Manipulating the inspected frame-derived coaching inputs can alter displayed advice, but the traced output has no authority to accept a photo or persist a packet. Broader external caller exposure was not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The inspected enforcement boundary remains between frame evidence and accepted keyframes, not between coaching visibility and capture. Against d9abb8e, the movement checks retain the same thresholds while splitting their reported reasons; delayed or suppressed coaching does not suppress those checks.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Equal timestamps are accepted into darkness sample history, and blur keeps a fixed reference while its spell persists. These can affect advisory history, with timestamp uniqueness unresolved. The inspected persistence path remains independently generation-guarded across asynchronous saves, credits coverage only after successful storage, and drains pending-save accounting on every exit.

Explanation

The PR includes changes that have no direct connection to issue #26. CoachingDebouncer adds darkness hysteresis and persistent-dark coaching, adds fixed-reference blur coaching, and adds tooDarkToMeasure copy and demo states. GapRequestScreen integrates coaching for multiple gap-request types. These changes address separate darkness, blur, and gap-request behavior rather than the standing-still marking problem in #26.

Adversarial review of U5 (head c4dec62, base t3/ios-mvf). I read the diff, the full changed files, #26 and #80 with their comments, and the 4.1 run analyses (run 3 for the dark card). I checked the Swift by reading it; there is no Swift toolchain on this machine.

Must fix

  1. ios/HouseScan/UI/Screens/WallWalkScreen.swift:94-97 (withCoaching): gate coaching now replaces the task's second line, and at night that line is hidden for the whole walk. The brief asked to keep the task card and add a small badge. This PR keeps the title but swaps task.detail for ScanCopy.coachingNote(...). For aim steps the detail line is the only thing that says where to aim: "The strip along the wall, at your meter." (aimAtGround), "At your meter." / "Around 5 ft left of your meter." (aimAtWall), the stretch for tiltUp, the place for seeBehind, "tap Wall ends here" for markEnd, the fix for a markNextWall refusal, and what to do next after wallTooShort. The new hysteresis is meant to keep the dark coaching up, so on a night walk those lines disappear for as long as it is dark. After 20 s they are replaced by "Try in daylight." Failure scenario: in run 3 the tester spent 73 s on "Tilt down to show the ground… at your meter" (A41-2055-04). With this PR, that card reads "Tilt down to show the ground / It's dark here. Some photos won't count. Try your phone's flashlight, or come back in daylight." for the whole stretch, so "at your meter" never shows. Fix expected: keep task.detail, and add the coaching as its own short line after it, for example detail: [task.detail, ScanCopy.coaching(coaching).title].compactMap { $0 }.joined(separator: "\n"), or the title plus a shortened note. The badge is already carried by tone. Extend testGateCoachingKeepsTheTaskOnTheCard (ScreenStatesUITests.swift:179) so it also checks the task's detail, for example "Keep the wall and the ground in view".

  2. PR body, "Dependencies: None required", is wrong. This PR must not merge before #102. WallWalkScreen.swift:284 still builds the "Can't get there" / "I can't see behind it" reply only when state.coaching == nil. Before this PR the dark card flickered, so the reply came back every few seconds (run 3, 1:30.5 shows it half faded in). With the new hysteresis the dark coaching stays up: it clears only after 1.5 s in which under 20% of frames are dark and every frame is above 48 luma. Failure scenario: if #104 merges and ships without #102, a night walk like run 3 hides the only way out of an unreachable stretch for the whole time it is dark, not just part of the time. That makes #80's "hides the way out" worse. Fix expected: in the PR body, state that #102 has to merge first or together (coachingHidesReply in #102 fixes this), and say it again under Risk.

Should fix

  1. ios/HouseScan/UI/Screens/GapRequestScreen.swift:82: the gap request still replaces its instruction with any coaching. walk() runs in .gapRequest too (ScanEngine case .wallWalk, .gapRequest: walk(frame)), and the debouncer isn't reset when the phase changes. At night the gap screen will now show "It's dark here" (later "It's too dark to measure here") in place of the requested view the whole time. Run 3 hit exactly this at 1:42-1:45 ("4 more views to finish" under the dark card). Before, the request at least flickered through. U9 owns this file, so either apply the same ride-along there with that owner's agreement, or list it under Risk and file a follow-up.

  2. WallWalkScreen.swift:116-122 (tone): ride-along coaching overrides the refusal tone. When the title is a markNextWall(_, refusal?) refusal or wallTooShort, the card now shows the refusal words with an amber coaching symbol instead of the red triangle. Before this PR the coaching replaced the whole card, so that mix never appeared. When !Self.replacesTask(coaching), the refusal tone should win (or at least be checked first).

  3. WallWalkScreen.swift:112: the tray-open suppression covers only .slowDown. e760327 hid coaching while the mark tray is open because turning the phone to pick a mark read as moving (#26, run 1). That turning now arrives as .turnSlowly (and blur while aiming as .holdSteady), which the filter lets through. So with the tray open, turning the phone brings up "Turn more slowly" on the card: the same false alarm under a new name. Suppress .turnSlowly and .holdSteady with the tray open too.

Notes

  • ScanEngine.swift:1761: .limited(.excessiveMotion) still maps to .slowDown ("Walk a little slower…"), undebounced and regardless of isAiming. The brief says to leave the tracking coaching alone, so this is fine for now. But "Fixes #26" assumes the 4.1 slow-downs came from the gate. Run 3's photos are all tracking: normal, so there's no evidence either way. U16 should check that the log shows skipped: movingFast/turningFast rather than limited tracking when "Slow down" appears.
  • The mental compile passes. SkipReason has 8 cases, and CoachingDebouncer.evidence covers all of them plus nil. isAiming covers all 13 GuidanceStep cases. Both ScanCopy switches and replacesTask cover the two new Coaching cases. Every other Coaching switch uses default. The overloads coaching(for:skip:) (instance) and static coaching(for:aiming:) differ by label. CoachingDebouncer and its [(time:, dark:)] storage are Sendable under Swift 6 mode. The test's inout capture is inside map, which doesn't escape. .redundant exists. I traced every CoachingDebouncerTests scenario by hand, including the floating-point edges at 0.7 s and the 26.6 s clear, and the expected values hold. The new AutoCaptureTests rotations are pure yaw about world +y, so rotationAngle equals the yaw.
  • coaching(for:skip:)'s new .turningFast arm can't be reached: every caller passes skip: nil. It's harmless.
  • Log strings change from skipped: moving to skipped: movingFast / skipped: turningFast. I searched every origin branch and nothing parses the old string.
  • The "said once" persistent dark stays up until the light returns rather than showing once. That matches the PR body and is a reasonable reading of the brief.
  • Scope: no project.yml/project.pbxproj changes. UIDemo.swift is outside the unit's file list, but the change is a one-line doc update for the new demo arguments.
  • Public-repo check on the diff, PR body and commit message: no names, meter numbers, addresses, emails, private/ content or media. The link in the body goes to the old repo name, which redirects.
  • PR body has Fixes #26 / Part of #80, the base, CI-only vs device-only checks, files touched and the attribution line. Dependencies needs correcting (item 2).
  • Checks: "Label PR size" passes. "iOS build" is skipped because this is a draft with no PR-triggered iOS run, so neither swift test (the new CoachingDebouncerTests/AutoCaptureTests) nor the app build/UI tests have run. They need a CI run (or a Mac) before this leaves draft.

…tone, tray hides turn/steady coaching

Ride-along coaching no longer replaces the task's detail: on aim steps that
line is the only thing that says where to aim, and the dark coaching can now
stay up for a whole night walk. The coaching's title goes on its own line
under it. A refusal on the task keeps the red triangle over ride-along
coaching, and with the mark tray open "Turn more slowly" and "Hold steady"
are hidden like "Slow down" was.

Addressed the review (#104 (review)) in 9b0acc5.

Must fix

  1. Ride-along coaching replaced the task's second line. Fixed. withCoaching now keeps task.detail and adds the coaching on its own line under it: [task.detail, ScanCopy.coachingNote(coaching)].compactMap { $0 }.joined(separator: "\n"). coachingNote is now just the coaching's title with a period ("It's dark here.", "Turn more slowly."). So the aim steps' "at your meter" / stretch / "tap Wall ends here" lines, the markNextWall refusal fix and wallTooShort's next step all stay on the card under a night-long dark coaching. The coaching's longer advice ("Try your phone's flashlight...") no longer rides along; the symbol and the title carry the warning. testGateCoachingKeepsTheTaskOnTheCard now also checks "Keep the wall and the ground in view". coachingNote has one caller (withCoaching), and the wallWalk-tooDark audit expectation ("It's dark here", label contains) still holds.
  2. Dependencies was wrong. Fixed in the PR body. Dependencies now says ios: card replies name the task, stay under gate coaching, and lock after a new card #102 must merge first or together, and why: reply on the base still requires state.coaching == nil, and the dark coaching is now sticky. Risk says it again.

Should fix

  1. GapRequestScreen still replaces the request with any coaching. Not changed here: the file belongs to unit U9, and none of the open PRs that touch it (ios: card replies name the task, stay under gate coaching, and lock after a new card #102, ios: gap-loop follow-ups, upload ticks, the nearer unseen end and request stretches (#39, #31, #83, #75) #109, ios: 'I can't get there' moves on to the next requested view (#39) #49) change that line. It's listed under Risk in the PR body as needing the same ride-along, for U9's owner.
  2. Ride-along coaching overrode the refusal tone. Fixed. tone now checks, in order: the marking refusal; coaching that replaces the task (its own symbol); the markNextWall refusal; wallTooShort; then ride-along coaching. Each check keeps its old conditions (the markNextWall check still only needs marking == nil), so the only change in behaviour is that a refusal now wins over ride-along coaching.
  3. The tray-open filter covered only .slowDown. Fixed. With the tray open, .slowDown, .turnSlowly and .holdSteady are all hidden. Tracking coaching, darkness and texture still show. reply still reads state.coaching directly, as before (ios: card replies name the task, stay under gate coaching, and lock after a new card #102 replaces that).

Notes

  • I checked the Swift by reading it; there's no toolchain here. The new coaching switch uses optional patterns (.slowDown?) with a default, the array literal infers [String?], and coaching, tone, withCoaching and coachingNote are only used inside WallWalkScreen.swift and ScanCopy.swift.
  • No server files changed. CI still has to run swift test and the app build and UI tests before this leaves draft.

@AidenJohnston Independent review at 9b0acc5 found two remaining coaching cases:

  • ScanEngine.swift:617 classifies every .gap as stationary aiming, but .walkOut explicitly asks the homeowner to walk and beginGap assigns .gap at line 1306. CoachingDebouncer then suppresses movingFast while AutoCapture still rejects those frames; blur becomes Hold steady during a walking task. Please distinguish walkOut from stationary gap requests and test routing.
  • GapRequestScreen.swift:82 still replaces the request with coaching. Persistent darkness now sustains that loss of the requested view. ios: card replies name the task, stay under gate coaching, and lock after a new card #102 preserves the reply but not the instruction. Please retain the task and append coaching here as on WallWalk.

The earlier lost walk-task detail, refusal-tone and tray-filtering findings are repaired at this head. #102 remains a dependency. Current-head iOS is skipped; these conclusions are from source review, with no build or device run.

Fresh adversarial review of U5 at head 9b0acc5 (base t3/ios-mvf, now at f14947e). I read the PR diff, body and commits, the full changed files, #80 and #26 with their comments, run 3's public analysis, the two earlier reviews on this PR, and did a trial merge of this head into the current base (git merge-tree). There is no Swift toolchain here, so the Swift was checked by reading it.

Must fix

  1. The PR breaks the build once merged into the current base. ios/HouseScan/UI/Screens/WallWalkScreen.swift:270-275 on t3/ios-mvf: since this branch was cut, the base took f14947e ("Keep "Can't get there" on screen through the capture gate's coaching"). That commit added coachingHidesReply, an exhaustive switch state.coaching with no default:
case nil, .slowDown?, .needsTexture?, .tooDark?, .holdSteady?: false / case .initializing?, .relocalizing?, .trackingLost?, .pastWallEnd?: true.
This PR adds Coaching.turnSlowly and .tooDarkToMeasure. Git reports the merge as clean because the lines don't overlap, but the merged WallWalkScreen.swift:298-303 fails to compile with "switch must be exhaustive". CI can't catch this before merge: the draft's iOS build is skipped, and it would build this head, not the merge result. Fix: rebase onto origin/t3/ios-mvf and add .turnSlowly?, .tooDarkToMeasure? to the false arm. Both are gate coaching, so they must keep the reply, which is the point of #80's "never hide Can't get there". Don't add a default:, so the next new case is a compile error again. Then update the Dependencies/Risk sections. The reply-under-gate-coaching fix they say must come from #102 is already on the base in f14947e. #102 (t3/41-card-replies, still open) will conflict with f14947e on coachingHidesReply whatever happens here.

  2. ios/HouseScan/Runtime/ScanEngine.swift:617: every .gap counts as "aiming", including a request that asks the homeowner to walk. beginGap sets state.guidance = .gap (:1306) for all requests. GapRequest.Reason.walkOut says "Walk along this stretch about N ft out from the wall… Follow the dotted line" (ScanCopy.swift:281-285). With aiming == true, CoachingDebouncer.update never returns .movingFast, and coaching(for:aiming:) turns blur into "Hold steady". Failure: on a walkOut request, someone walking faster than 1.5 m/s has every frame refused (skip(.movingFast)) and is never told to slow down. If blur does trip, a walking homeowner is told "Hold steady", which is the advice the old walkCoaching comment specifically avoided. This is SamGu-NRX's open finding on this head, and it hasn't been answered yet. Fix: in isAiming, treat .gap as aiming only when state.gap?.reason is not .walkOut, and cover the routing with a test. Either make isAiming a static func isAiming(guidance:gapReason:marking:…) that can be tested, or add a ScanEngine-level test if one exists.

  3. ios/HouseScan/UI/Screens/GapRequestScreen.swift:82 (and the tone at :29): the gap request is now hidden for as long as it is dark. walk() also runs in .gapRequest (ScanEngine.swift, case .wallWalk, .gapRequest: walk(frame)), and the debouncer isn't reset on the phase change. So a dark coaching that is up at the end of the walk carries straight into the request. GapRequestScreen.instruction still returns ScanCopy.coaching(coaching) for any coaching. Before this PR the dark card flickered, so the request showed through between flickers. With the new hysteresis it never does. Failure (run 3, public analysis, 1:42-1:45): at night, "Show the ground out to about 14 ft from the wall. Around your meter." is replaced from its first frame by "It's dark here", and after 20 s by "It's too dark to measure here / Try in daylight.". The "Got it, thanks" confirmation is hidden too. U9's brief (the owner of this file) doesn't cover this line, and none of the open PRs touching the file change it (#102 only adds task: to the reply). So as things stand nobody fixes a regression this PR creates. SamGu-NRX raised it too. Fix: apply the same ride-along here, which is a few lines. Replace the request only for initializing/relocalizing/trackingLost/pastWallEnd. Otherwise keep ScanCopy.gap(gap) (or the satisfied copy) and append ScanCopy.coachingNote(coaching) to its detail. Keep the coaching symbol as the tone. Get the U9 owner's OK in the PR, and add a gapRequest-tooDark state/expectation to ScreenStatesUITests.

Should fix

  1. CoachingDebouncer.swift:63 (blurShowAfter = 2) together with AutoCapture.swift:39,135: in practice blur coaching can never show, and the PR body doesn't say so. The gate calls a frame blurry when its sharpness is under half the median of the last 15 measured frames. Every walk frame is measured (pose-only frames return before walk). After 8 blurry frames in a row the median is itself a blurry value, so the 9th frame passes. That makes a blurry spell at most about 8 frames, roughly 0.8 s at about 10 Hz, and any passing frame ends a spell that hasn't shown yet (updateMotion). Failure: steady real blur (shaky hands at night, a long exposure) never produces "Hold steady" or blur-"Slow down". The body's "Blur shows only after 2 s… reads as Slow down while walking and Hold steady while aiming" describes behaviour that can't happen on a device. Only the synthetic 2.5 s test reaches it. Either say plainly in the body and the Config doc that this effectively turns blur coaching off (that is a product call, so flag it for U16), or judge blur by its share of the window (as darkness is) instead of an unbroken run.

  2. ScanEngine.swift:617: .markNextWall counts as aiming, but that step says "walk round it, aim at the next wall and mark it" (ScanContract.swift, GuidanceStep.markNextWall). Walking round a corner too fast gets no "Slow down". It is lower impact than walkOut, but it belongs to the same fix. Decide it deliberately and note it in the body.

  3. ios/HouseScanUITests/ScreenStatesUITests.swift:187-189: the new test reads card.label live three times. After bc5a1ac/94e87b5 (the #24 flake fix) the base reads audit elements once from a snapshot (ElementRead.snapshot, AccessibilityAudit.swift:41), because a live read of a gone element records a failure that can't be caught. After the rebase, read let label = ElementRead.snapshot(card)?.label ?? "" once and assert on it. With -uiDemoFreeze the risk is small, but it goes against the base's rule.

  4. PR body is stale after the base moved. "Dependencies: #102 must merge first" and the matching Risk item describe a problem f14947e has since fixed on the base. The body also doesn't mention the rebase, the exhaustive-switch fix (item 1), or the gap-screen change (item 3). Update it once those land.

Notes

  • The rest of the mental compile holds. SkipReason has 8 cases, and CoachingDebouncer.evidence covers all of them plus nil. The evidence order matches AutoCapture.evaluate (tracking, speed, turn, exposure, sharpness, then tooSoon/redundant), so tooSoon counting as "checked and clean" is correct. isAiming covers all 13 GuidanceStep cases. replacesTask, both ScanCopy switches and DemoEngine.coaching(_:) cover the new cases, and the other Coaching switches on this head use default. coaching(for:skip:) (instance) and static coaching(for:aiming:) differ by label. CoachingDebouncer's public API (type, GateProblem, Config, init, update, forgetMotion, isDark) is public, and its tuple storage is Sendable. The AutoCaptureTests yaw helper is a pure rotation about world +y, so rotationAngle equals the yaw: 36° in 0.4 s is 90°/s, and 20° in 0.5 s is 40°/s, which is at least 15° and so gives .keep(.spacing). I checked the CoachingDebouncerTests edges (0.7 s show at exactly 7/10, said[10], said[30], and the persistent-dark once-per-scan sequence) and the expected values hold.
  • No other open branch adds a new use of SkipReason.moving. The only ones are the existing ScanEngine/AutoCapture lines this PR renames, so a rename conflict elsewhere is just a textual rebase. Nothing parses the skipped: moving log string.
  • .limited(.excessiveMotion) still maps to "Slow down", with no debounce and whatever the step (ScanEngine.swift:1761). That stays by the brief, but U16 should check whether the 4.1 slow-downs during tilts or crouching were gate (skipped: movingFast/turningFast) or ARKit. Crouching on a walk step can also exceed 1.5 m/s vertically and still say "Slow down".
  • The brief's UI test asks for "the task title and the badge". The badge symbol is accessibilityHidden, so the test checks the coaching's words instead. That's fine, but it doesn't prove the symbol shows.
  • Scope: no project.yml/project.pbxproj changes and no server files. UIDemo.swift (a doc line) is outside the unit's file list but harmless. reply and InstructionCard are untouched, as U6 requires.
  • Public-repo check on the diff, PR body and both commit messages: no names, meter numbers or serials, addresses, emails, private/ content or media. The body's permalink uses the old repo name, which redirects.
  • PR body has Fixes #26 / Part of #80, the base, CI-only vs device-only checks, files touched, dependencies, risk and the attribution line (see item 7 for what's stale).
  • Checks: "Label PR size" and CodeRabbit (skipped as draft) pass. "iOS build" is skipped because this is a draft with no PR-triggered iOS run. So neither swift test (the new CoachingDebouncerTests/AutoCaptureTests) nor the app build or UI tests have run, and item 1 would only show on a build of the merge result. It needs a green iOS run on the rebased head before it leaves draft.

Verdict: blocked

…still say slow down

- WallWalkScreen.coachingHidesReply (from the base's f14947e) lists turnSlowly and
tooDarkToMeasure in its keep-the-reply arm, so the merged switch stays exhaustive.
- GapRequestScreen: tracking problems and past-the-end still replace the request; the
capture gate's coaching now rides along under it with its symbol as the tone, as on the
walk. Once the view is in, gate coaching no longer shows. The replace/ride-along rule and
the ride-along copy move to ScanCopy so both screens share them.
- ScanEngine.isAiming: a gap request counts as aiming unless it asks to walk
(GapPlan.Need.asksToWalk, walkOut only), and markNextWall ("walk round it") counts as
walking, so hurrying there is told to slow down.
- CoachingDebouncer.Config.blurShowAfter says plainly that it turns blur coaching off in
practice (the gate's median-based blur test ends a spell within about 8 frames).
- Tests: asksToWalk routing in CoachingDebouncerTests, a gapRequest-tooDark screen state
and a test that the request stays on the card; the walk test reads the card once from a
  snapshot.

Addressed the review at 9b0acc5 in 633c26d (merge of t3/ios-mvf at f14947e in eec3862, then one fix commit).

Must fix

  1. Merged build broke on coachingHidesReply. Fixed. I merged origin/t3/ios-mvf into the branch instead of rebasing, because a rebase would need a force-push. The result is the same tree. coachingHidesReply now reads case nil, .slowDown?, .needsTexture?, .tooDark?, .tooDarkToMeasure?, .holdSteady?, .turnSlowly?: false, with no default. I re-read every switch on Coaching in the merged tree: ScanCopy.coaching/coachingSymbol, ScanCopy.coachingReplacesTask (new, moved from WallWalkScreen), coachingHidesReply and coaching(for:aiming:) are exhaustive, and the rest use default. The body's Dependencies/Risk sections no longer say the reply fix has to come from ios: card replies name the task, stay under gate coaching, and lock after a new card #102, and they note that ios: card replies name the task, stay under gate coaching, and lock after a new card #102 must keep the two new cases when it resolves against f14947e.
  2. isAiming treated a walk-out request as aiming. Fixed. .gap counts as aiming only when !(gapPlan?.need.asksToWalk ?? false). GapPlan.Need.asksToWalk is a new public HouseScanKit property with an exhaustive switch (true only for .walkOut). The app has no unit-test target, so the classification lives in the package, where CoachingDebouncerTests.aWalkOutRequestStillSaysSlowDown covers it and the routing: a 3 s movingFast spell says .movingFast on a walk-out request and nothing on a ground-out one. I used gapPlan.need rather than state.gap?.reason because beginGap derives .walkOut from the plan's need, and gapPlan and state.gap are set and cleared together.
  3. The gap request was hidden for the whole night. Fixed. GapRequestScreen.instruction replaces the request only when ScanCopy.coachingReplacesTask is true (initializing, relocalizing, trackingLost, pastWallEnd). Otherwise it returns ScanCopy.withCoaching(ScanCopy.gap(gap), coaching), which keeps the title and second line and appends coachingNote, and the tone keeps the coaching symbol. The walk uses the same two helpers, now in ScanCopy. One deliberate difference: once the view is in (isSatisfied), gate coaching is dropped, so "Got it, thanks" shows plain, because there is nothing left to photograph. Tracking coaching still replaces it, as before. I added a gapRequest-tooDark state with an expectation ("Show the ground") and testGateCoachingKeepsTheGapRequestOnTheCard, which checks the title, its second line and "It's dark here". U9's owner: this touches your file. Please confirm it's OK. The body flags it too.

Should fix

  1. Blur coaching can't show in practice. Documented, not changed. Config.blurShowAfter's doc and the body now say plainly that the gate's median-of-15 blur test ends a spell within about 8 frames, which effectively turns blur coaching off. They flag share-based blur for U16. Rewriting the blur rule is a product call with new thresholds, so I didn't slip it into this fix.
  2. .markNextWall counted as aiming. Decided: the corner step now counts as walking ("walk round it"), so movingFast there says "Slow down". The mark itself runs as state.marking, which still counts as aiming. Since turning is now its own reason, movingFast needs real translation over 1.5 m/s, so standing and aiming at the next wall won't trip it. The isAiming doc and the body say this.
  3. Live card.label reads. Fixed. Both card tests read ElementRead.snapshot(card)?.label once.
  4. Stale body. Updated: base merge, the exhaustive switch, the gap-screen change, asksToWalk, the corner decision, the blur note, Dependencies (nothing needs to merge first now) and Risk.

Checks: there's no Swift toolchain here, so I re-read every changed call site and switch by hand. No server files changed. CI still has to run swift test and the app build and UI tests on this head before it leaves draft.

@AidenJohnston Bounded review at 633c26d confirms my three source findings are repaired: coachingHidesReply handles the new cases, walkOut uses gapPlan.need.asksToWalk and receives walking-speed coaching, and GapRequestScreen retains the request title/detail with gate coaching appended. The added package test covers walkOut versus stationary routing, and the new UI test checks the request title, detail and darkness note. These tests have not run on this head: iOS is skipped and no manual exact-head run is listed.

For the combined app, retain these new coaching cases when merging #102's exhaustive switch, and retain #109's accessibility-size stop-button placement when combining GapRequestScreen. Those are integration requirements, not new defects in this corrective diff. No current-head CI clearance claimed; device blur coaching remains the documented limitation.

P2 Badge Clear suppressed movement spells while aiming

When an aim step reports .movingFast for at least 0.7 seconds, this condition hides the advice but leaves the fully matured spell in spells. If guidance then changes to a walking step, even the first calm frame preserves that spell for clearAfter because updateMotion only deletes spells that have not reached the show threshold, so the UI briefly says “Slow down” despite the user no longer moving. Clear or avoid accumulating .movingFast while aiming so suppressed evidence cannot leak into the next task.

[Medium risk] Adds new coaching states and debouncing logic for camera guidance.

The PR should not merge until sustained blur can produce coaching; the dark card should also retain actionable advice.

Fix All in Claude CodeFindings

  1. P1 Sustained blur loses coaching ▶
  2. P2 Darkness advice disappears ▶
Fix with agent prompt
### Issue 1
ios/HouseScanKit/Sources/HouseScanKit/Guidance/CoachingDebouncer.swift:70
**Sustained blur loses coaching.** During normal capture, the gate compares sharpness with the median of its last 15 measured frames. After roughly eight blurry measurements, that median becomes blurry too, so the gate stops reporting blur before this new two-second threshold is reached. The previous 0.7-second debounce could show feedback; now someone taking persistently blurry photos will not see “Hold steady” or “Slow down” for that problem.

### Issue 2
ios/HouseScan/UI/Copy/ScanCopy.swift:127-129
**Darkness advice disappears.** When dark coaching appears beneath a walk task or gap request, `withCoaching` adds only its title. The flashlight and daylight advice lives in the coaching detail, so users see that it is dark but not what they can do about photos that will not count.

For each issue above, determine whether it is valid and should be fixed. If so, fix it directly.
Summary

The PR separates walking speed from turning, adds per-problem gate coaching with darkness hysteresis, and keeps walk and gap tasks visible beneath gate coaching.

  • It adds package tests for gate timing and capture decisions, plus UI states for the combined task/coaching card.
  • The blur threshold prevents sustained-blur coaching, and the combined card omits the dark coaching’s actionable detail.

Correction: in my earlier update (comment 5855716738) I wrote that you had accepted this limitation. You hadn't. You asked for a follow-up or a gate-to-coaching regression. It also wasn't there "before this PR": the base showed blur after 0.7 s, and this PR's 2 s is what shut it off.

Addressed in a097c66, still open for your check:

  • CoachingDebouncer also judges each frame's own sharpness against the median sharpness of the 1.5 s before the blur began, held fixed while the blur lasts, at the gate's ratio (0.5). The gate's adapting median can't end the spell any more.
  • The 2 s show time stays, so a drop shorter than that (a tilt) still says nothing.
  • New sustainedBlurThroughTheGateIsCoached drives the real AutoCapture into the debouncer: 3 s sharp, 4 s at under a third of that, then sharp again. It checks that the gate stops calling the blur blurry by 4.5 s, that the coaching says blur from 5.0 s until the frames are sharp, and that it clears after. shortSharpnessDropSaysNothing covers a 1.8 s drop.
  • Not verified on a phone: looking for more than 2 s at a much plainer surface than the one before also reads as a drop. That risk is in the body for the device run (U16).

Confirmed — this follow-up addresses the concern. CoachingDebouncer now derives blur evidence from each frame’s sharpness against a fixed pre-spell reference, so AutoCapture’s adapting 15-frame median can no longer terminate a sustained blur spell before the 2-second coaching threshold.

The new sustainedBlurThroughTheGateIsCoached test verifies that the real gate stops reporting .blurry around 4.5 seconds while coaching remains active from 5 seconds until sharp frames resume. shortSharpnessDropSaysNothing also covers the intended sub-2-second case. The previously reported finding is resolved.

Caretaker check at 5f8f877: fixed. 040d9a6 is in this head. ScanCopy.coachingNote keeps the flashlight and daylight advice for .tooDark and .tooDarkToMeasure (ScanCopy.swift:114-122), and both ride-along UI tests assert "flashlight" (ScreenStatesUITests.swift:246, 264). Greptile confirmed the blur thread in 4115595121.

@AidenJohnston Checked Greptile findings4115035862 and4115035866 against633c26d. The darkness advice loss is confirmed: coachingNote keeps only the title, and withCoaching never includes the flashlight/daylight detail. Preserve the task's aim instruction while retaining a short actionable darkness instruction.

The blur finding matches the limitation already documented at CoachingDebouncer61-69: the gate's15-frame rolling median adapts before the2s continuous spell can normally show. That disclosure does not establish acceptable phone behavior. Please retain this as an explicit follow-up or supply a gate-to-coaching regression with sustained sharpness loss before treating blur coaching as working. I am not attributing all blurry captures to this path, and this does not add a hold on the lead's controlled ordinary-demo beta run. Source ownership remains yours.

…t helps

Moving fast while aiming now drops the walking-speed spell instead of
keeping it hidden, so the next walking step can't open with "Slow down"
on a calm frame. The ride-along dark coaching keeps its advice
(flashlight, daylight), since it can stay up for a whole night walk.

The sustained-blur finding4115035862 remains: blurShowAfter is still2s and the adaptive gate stops the usual continuous spell sooner. Please preserve that open disposition; source comments disclose it but do not verify acceptable behavior. Current-head CI/review remain pending.

Updated for review at 040d9a6.

Base merge. b70f1c8 merges t3/ios-mvf at e62be65 (the 37 commits). It merged cleanly. I re-checked every switch on SkipReason and Coaching in the merged tree: no stale .moving, and coachingHidesReply still lists turnSlowly and tooDarkToMeasure.

Review items

  • Sam, the new tests hadn't run at 633c26d: they had, in run 36305050676 (the CoachingDebouncerTests suite, all 12 tests, including aWalkOutRequestStillSaysSlowDown, testGateCoachingKeepsTheTaskOnTheCard, testGateCoachingKeepsTheGapRequestOnTheCard). That run failed only on testFullFlowFromReplay "screen.wallWalk: Contrast failed … 'Mark something'". That's the known wallWalk contrast flake: base b90fb8e hit the same thing in run 36307478637 (testFullFlowFromLidarReplay). It passes at this head (below).
  • Codex P2, a spell held back while aiming leaks into the next step: fixed in 040d9a6. While aiming, CoachingDebouncer.update drops the movingFast spell, so the next walking step starts clean. New test: movingFastWhileAimingDoesntCarryIntoTheNextStep.
  • Greptile P2, dark advice drops out of the ride-along line: fixed in 040d9a6. ScanCopy.coachingNote keeps what helps for the two dark cases ("It's dark here. Try your phone's flashlight, or come back in daylight." / "It's too dark to measure here. Try in daylight."). Other coaching still adds only its title. Both card UI tests now also check for "flashlight".
  • Greptile P1, sustained blur never coaches: not changed. This is the documented limitation Sam already accepted (Config.blurShowAfter, body). The cause is the gate's median-of-15 blur test. A shorter show time or a share-based rule needs new thresholds, which is a product call for the device run (U16).

CI at 040d9a6

No review-clear claimed; that's Sam's call.

The gate compares each frame with the median of its last 15, so steady
blur stops reading as blurry within a second, and with blur shown only
after 2 s its coaching never came up. The debouncer now also counts a
frame as blurry when it is under the gate's ratio of the median
sharpness from the 1.5 s before the spell began, held fixed while the
spell lasts. A short drop, such as a tilt, still says nothing, and steady
blur shows from 2 s in until the photos are sharp again. A package test
runs the real gate into the debouncer. The dark walk card is also
checked at AX5.

With no request yet, the reply's task was nil, so the lock keyed on the
card's words, coaching included, and locked the reply again each time
coaching came or went. It now keys on the gap step's own words. The
InstructionCard note on coaching no longer says coaching always replaces
the words, which stops holding once coaching can ride along (#104).

@AidenJohnston Verified at 5f8f8777e1f0b03400b88a7be7dbe2b314a9def5: the held reference and real-gate regression address the original adapting-median problem. Thank you for correcting the earlier acceptance claim.

The new reference needs a recovery rule for changing views. CoachingDebouncer.swift:198-211 retains it while sharpness stays below half the earlier median. A detailed view at 100 followed by a sharp but less textured view at 30 therefore keeps blur coaching active indefinitely, even after the capture gate accepts that view. The caller at ScanEngine.swift:618 passes no scene/task identity. The new regression recovers only by returning to the original sharpness.

Please retain this as the specific U16 follow-up you identified, with a sharp low-texture scene-transition regression and an explicit recovery policy or device evidence supporting a bounded disposition. This is a source-derived behavior, not a measured phone failure. It does not request another CI sweep or hold the ordinary demo release.

@AidenJohnston Current-head CI follow-up. At 5f8f8777e1f0b03400b88a7be7dbe2b314a9def5, run36323854478 failed testFullFlowFromLidarReplay and testSomethingThereChecksTheWallAgain at FullFlowUITests267: screen.wallWalk: Contrast failed on a SwiftUI accessibility node without an element identifier. Package tests passed483/80suites; UI ran21 cases with1skip and2failures. The log alone does not identify the failing control or prove the coaching change caused it.

The app build passed. This run explicitly excluded the full every-state accessibility audit. Please diagnose within the existing UI/CI ownership; I have not retried the job or changed assertions.

Rebase blur coaching after an accepted scene change.

gateCoaching keeps blurReference while the blur spell remains active. AutoCapture can accept a frame after its median adapts, but CoachingDebouncer can still compare that frame with the old reference and renew the blur spell. Ordinary scene changes do not reset the debouncer while tracking remains normal.

This stale coaching does not block capture. walk evaluates capture before it updates coaching, and the UI displays capture coaching as supplementary task text. Rebase or clear blurReference when an accepted frame establishes a stable new sharpness baseline. Do not use a blind time cap that can hide genuinely sustained blur. Add a regression test for sharpness 100 → 30 → 40 and assert that coaching clears after the new scene is accepted.

@AidenJohnston Caretaker check at 5f8f877 (a097c66 is in it), source-traced only, not run. There are two mechanisms in CoachingDebouncer.updateMotion (CoachingDebouncer.swift:195-218).

  1. Duplicate, still open: this thread and Sam's 5856949057 already cover it. While a blur spell lasts, blurReference is frozen at the old scene's median (line 211). FrameQuality.swift:35-36 says sharpness only compares within one scene. Sharp detail at 100 followed by a sharp, plain view at 30 is "blurry" on every frame, so the spell never ends and coaching never clears.

  2. New: the reference median is taken (line 198) before this frame appends and prunes sharpness (lines 212-217). The 1.5 s window is therefore only enforced when a measured frame arrives. When measured frames pause (walkCoaching runs only from walk(_:), ScanEngine.swift:601-618, and quality can be nil), the next frame is judged against history from long ago.

    • Input: update(time:, skip: nil, meanLuma: 128, sharpness: 100, aiming: true) every 0.1 s from 0 to 2.9 s, then nothing, then sharpness: 30 every 0.1 s from 30.0 s.
    • Expected: at 30.0 there are no samples from the last 1.5 s (the median needs minDarkSamples = 5), so there is no reference. 30 becomes the new baseline and nothing is coached.
    • Actual: at 30.0 the median of the 1.4–2.9 s samples is 100, and 30 < 100 × 0.5 marks the frame blurry. The spell starts, line 211 freezes the reference at 100, and .blurry shows from 32.0 s and never clears (mechanism 1).

Root's candidate is taking 040d9a6 (the dark note) only. a097c66 is held until both are fixed. Suggested fix: prune expired samples before taking the median, and give the reference a recovery rule for a steady new scene (not a blind timeout). Add regressions for the gap sequence above and for 100 → 30 → steady 30.

…t helps

Moving fast while aiming now drops the walking-speed spell instead of
keeping it hidden, so the next walking step can't open with "Slow down"
on a calm frame. The ride-along dark coaching keeps its advice
(flashlight, daylight), since it can stay up for a whole night walk.

(cherry picked from commit 040d9a6)

Picked into the #191 candidate on root's decision after a fresh Sol review. #104's
a097c66 (blur reference) is left out: it can freeze a pre-blur reference across a
lower-texture scene and seed a stale median from expired samples. Blur coaching stays
parked.
