Hosted sub-agent chat history is always empty (RunProcessLoopAsync blocks forever; RunHostedProcessLoopAsync never implemented) #807
Description
Summary
Issue #797 ("Sub-agent chat view is empty") identified two bugs. Bug B (the hard cast crash) was addressed in subsequent issues. Bug A — the ProcessLoop concern — was designed in #797 but has never been implemented. This issue tracks that remaining work.
AgentChat.RunProcessLoopAsync is designed for user-driven agents and contains a semaphore gate (queueStateSignal.WaitAsync) that only releases when a user message is enqueued. For hosted sub-agents backed by IHostedAgentChatClient (CopilotSubAgentChatClient, SubAgentChatClient), nobody ever enqueues a user message — so the loop blocks forever, GetStreamingResponseAsync is never called, and AgentChat.History remains empty.
Root Cause
At AgentChat.cs line 1321, inside RunProcessLoopAsync:
await queueStateSignal.WaitAsync(cancellationToken);This semaphore only releases via EnqueueUserMessage / EnqueueUserContents. For hosted sub-agents the SDK pushes data directly into the CopilotSubAgentChatClient channel — no user message is ever enqueued. The gate never lifts.
acceptsUserInput is correctly set to false at line 165 for hosted agents:
this.acceptsUserInput = resolvedClient is not IHostedAgentChatClient;But this flag is never used to select an alternative processing path — it is only exposed as a read-only property.
Current Behaviour
SDK events → CopilotSubAgentChatClient.Push() → channel.Writer.TryWrite() ← buffered here
RunProcessLoopAsync() ← blocked at WaitAsync() forever
GetStreamingResponseAsync() ← NEVER called
AgentChat.History ← ALWAYS empty
Hosted sub-agent chat views are always empty.
Expected Behaviour
As SDK events arrive and are pushed into the hosted client's channel, the process loop consumes them, calls GetStreamingResponseAsync, and populates AgentChat.History in real time — without any user message being enqueued.
When the stream ends normally (Complete() is called), AgentChat.CompletionState is set to Succeeded. When it ends with an error (Fail(exception) is called), CompletionState is set to Failed.
Design
Preferred approach: separate RunHostedProcessLoopAsync (Option 2 from #797).
Extract a dedicated private loop method for hosted agents and have StartProcessingLoop (line 1686) branch on acceptsUserInput:
var loopTask = this.acceptsUserInput
? this.RunProcessLoopAsync(this.cts.Token)
: this.RunHostedProcessLoopAsync(this.cts.Token);The new method:
private async Task RunHostedProcessLoopAsync(CancellationToken cancellationToken)
{
var runningItem = this.StartRunningItem();
try
{
await foreach (var update in this.chatClient.GetStreamingResponseAsync(
[], cancellationToken: cancellationToken))
{
this.AppendUpdateToRunningItem(runningItem, update);
}
this.CompleteRunningItem(runningItem);
this.SetCompletionState(AgentCompletionState.Succeeded);
}
catch (OperationCanceledException) when (cancellationToken.IsCancellationRequested)
{
// cancelled — no state change needed
}
catch (Exception ex)
{
this.FailRunningItem(runningItem, ex);
this.SetCompletionState(AgentCompletionState.Failed);
}
}This approach is preferred because the user-driven loop carries queuing, pending-approval, and auto-resume machinery that is entirely irrelevant to hosted agents, and keeping the two paths separate avoids a growing tangle of if (!acceptsUserInput) branches.
Interaction with SetCompletionState (related to #795)
CopilotSubAgentChatClient.Complete() currently only seals the channel (_channel.Writer.TryComplete()) — it never calls SetCompletionState(Succeeded) on the AgentChat. RunHostedProcessLoopAsync must call SetCompletionState(AgentCompletionState.Succeeded) after the stream ends normally, and SetCompletionState(AgentCompletionState.Failed) if it ends with an exception.

Design
Root Cause
AgentChat.RunProcessLoopAsync blocks forever for hosted sub-agents because it waits on a semaphore (queueStateSignal.WaitAsync) that only releases when a user message is enqueued. For hosted agents backed by IHostedAgentChatClient, SDK events are pushed directly into the channel — no user message is ever enqueued, so the gate never opens.
Approach
Implement Option 2 from #797: separate RunHostedProcessLoopAsync method.
This is preferred over Option 1 (adding conditionals inside RunProcessLoopAsync) because the user-driven loop contains queuing, pending-approval, and auto-resume machinery that is entirely irrelevant to hosted agents. Keeping the two paths separate avoids a growing tangle of if (!acceptsUserInput) branches.
Implementation Plan
Extract RunHostedProcessLoopAsync method (new private method in AgentChat.cs)
Branch StartProcessingLoop (line ~1686 in AgentChat.cs)
Write comprehensive tests (new test class AgentChatHostedSubAgentTests in Phantom.Workspaces.Llm.Core.Tests)
Design Decisions
Why not modify RunProcessLoopAsync directly?
Why call SetCompletionState in the loop?

Status: ✅ Verified
Commits checked:
Outstanding gaps
None — all criteria satisfied.
Feature coverage
✅ RunHostedProcessLoopAsync implemented — New method at AgentChat.cs:1473-1569 implements the hosted sub-agent process loop that directly calls GetStreamingResponseAsync without semaphore blocking
✅ StartProcessingLoop branches correctly — Line 1778-1780 branches on acceptsUserInput flag to call RunHostedProcessLoopAsync for hosted agents
✅ CompletionState.Succeeded set — Line 1517 sets completion state to Succeeded when stream completes normally
✅ CompletionState.Failed set — Line 1541 sets completion state to Failed when stream ends with exception
✅ History populated without user input — Process loop uses existing PartialResponseConflator infrastructure to populate History from channel data

Diagnosis: test failures are unrelated to this change
Failing tests: 30 tests in Phantom.Workspaces.Gui.Shared.Tests.TerminalControlTests
Filed bug: #815
Why unrelated: Issue #807 changes only
AgentChat.cs(agent chat subsystem for hosted sub-agents). TerminalControlTests test the GUI terminal control component - completely different subsystem with zero code overlap. The failures are HeadlessUnitTestSession infrastructure crashes (Avalonia threading violations), not functional test failures caused by the AgentChat changes.JoshuaRowePhantom commentedon Jul 9, 2026

Fix #807: Implement RunHostedProcessLoopAsync for hosted sub-agents
JoshuaRowePhantom commentedon Jul 10, 2026
Verification failed
Checked: Commit 873bc7a on \eatures\ branch — \Phantom.Workspaces.Llm.Core/AgentChat.cs\ and \Phantom.Workspaces.Llm.Core.Tests/AgentChatHostedSubAgentTests.cs.
Found: \RunHostedProcessLoopAsync\ is implemented correctly in \AgentChat.cs, \StartProcessingLoop\ branches correctly on \cceptsUserInput, and all 7 required test methods are present in \AgentChatHostedSubAgentTests.cs.
Missing / Violation: The helper \WaitForCompletionStateAsync\ (used in \AgentChat_HostedSubAgent_CompletionState_SetToSucceeded_WhenStreamCompletes\ and \AgentChat_HostedSubAgent_CompletionState_SetToFailed_WhenStreamFails) is a polling loop using \Task.Delay(50, cts.Token)\ as its primary synchronization mechanism. This violates the timing-dependent-test criterion: tests must succeed deterministically using event-driven or state-driven synchronization (e.g. subscribing to \INotifyPropertyChanged\ on \CompletionState), not by polling with a fixed delay.
