Review panel (Opus 5.5) finding on #417: the macOS service file freezes the install-time `runtime/versions/<X>` directory into PATH. Since the rename that directory holds a `j5`, so after an in-app update agents could run the install-time CLI ahead of the appended current one. The server now drops other versions' directories from the same runtime tree before appending its own. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

…es it alone Review panel (Opus 5.5, Astra) second pass on #417: - `<home>/bin` first on PATH made a `j5 update` typed inside J5 resolve the agents' link as "the link I was started through", so it repointed that and left the installer's `~/.local/bin/j5` on the old version. The lookup now skips the agents' directory; - the server now puts `<home>/bin` first for every run mode that finds a `j5` there, not only the release executable. The desktop app's backend rebuilds PATH from the login shell, which pushed the directory the app had set behind the person's own; Astra reproduced an older `j5` winning; - the link is swapped by rename, so `j5` never goes missing. Agents and terminals inherit the server's PATH, so whether they could run `j5` depended on the person's shell setup; on a stock Mac they couldn't. A release server now appends its own executable's directory to PATH right after hydrating it from the login shell. It goes last, so a `j5` already on PATH still wins and the transition `t3` link never shadows an installed T3 Code. Part of #397. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

…first on PATH Decided with Jackson on 2026-10-03, replacing "append the executable's directory". The server keeps `<home>/bin/j5` pointed at its own executable and puts `<home>/bin` first on the PATH its agents inherit. The directory holds only `j5`, so agents get exactly their server's CLI, a stale `j5` earlier on PATH can't win, and the archive's `t3` link is never on PATH. The desktop app uses the same directory. | - **The one-time step.** An update from the app never replaces the service's launcher, and an old launcher starts every new version as `t3`. Shipping a `t3` link indefinitely would leave the migration unfinished, and removing it later would break those servers. Refusing the update with a clear message moves each server and its launcher across together. | ||
| - **Following updates.** On the dogfood box the command ran 0.0.44 while the service ran 0.0.47, so agents called a CLI three versions behind their server (#398). Upstream has the same gap with `t3`; the fix is in the give-back backlog (#276). | ||
| - **The installer and `PATH`.** A stock macOS shell doesn't have `~/.local/bin` on `PATH`, so a fresh install's `j5` wasn't found until the person edited their profile (#397). Jackson chose a profile line over linking into `/usr/local/bin`, which needs an admin prompt and a root-owned file the server couldn't repoint. | ||
| - **Agents.** An agent that can't find `j5` tends to work around it without saying so. Giving every agent its server's CLI, whatever the person's shell setup, removes that failure. The directory is J5's own and holds only `j5`, so it can go first without shadowing anything, including an installed T3 Code's `t3`. |

Keep <baseDir>/bin exclusive before prepending it to PATH.
exposeOwnCliToAgents replaces only j5 and preserves other directory entries. When j5 exists, mergePathEntries puts the directory before inherited PATH, so another executable there can shadow the same command for agents and terminals. Skip prepending when the directory contains entries other than j5.

| 53. Agents and terminals can run the server's own `j5` (#397; Jackson's 2026-10-03 choice of a J5-owned directory placed first). `apps/server/src/server.ts` imports J5-owned `apps/server/src/j5/cli/agentPath.ts` and runs `exposeOwnCliToAgents(config.baseDir)`, with errors logged and ignored, right after upstream's `fixPath()`, so it sees the login-shell `PATH`. A release executable first points `<home>/bin/j5` at itself (a temporary link renamed over it). Then any server that finds a `j5` there, which includes the desktop app's backend (case 54), puts `<home>/bin` first on `PATH` with upstream's `mergePathEntries`; `fixPath()` puts login-shell entries ahead of inherited ones, so only a step after it can keep the directory first. Agents, terminals and other children inherit the result. The directory holds only `j5`, so the archive's `t3` link (case 50) is never on anyone's `PATH`; that is why it isn't the executable's own directory. A shell that re-reads the person's profile, as a terminal does, can put their directories ahead again. Source runs find no `j5` there and are unchanged, and Windows is skipped. `apps/server/src/cli/update.ts` resolves the link it was started through with `withoutAgentCliOnPath`, because inside J5 a bare `j5` is the agents' link, and repointing that would leave the installer's link on the old version. `j5 uninstall` removes the agents' link when it was started through it and otherwise leaves it, inside the J5 home. If two servers share one home, the last one started owns the link. On a pin advance, re-check that `fixPath()` is still where the server hydrates `PATH` before spawning anything, and how `runUpdate` resolves its launcher. Proofs: `apps/server/src/j5/cli/agentPath.test.ts` (first on `PATH` without repeating; the link moved to the running version; a desktop script kept and put first after hydration; nothing for a source run; `j5 update`'s lookup skipping the agents' link). | ||

Qualify the source-run guarantee.
exposeOwnCliToAgents skips creating the link when HostProcessIsExecutable is false, but it still prepends <home>/bin if <home>/bin/j5 already exists. A source server that shares a home with a release installation therefore changes child PATH and exposes that release CLI.
Limit the statement to source runs without an existing link.
Proposed wording
- Source runs find no `j5` there and are unchanged, and Windows is skipped.
+ Source runs without an existing `<home>/bin/j5` are unchanged; Windows is skipped. This control flow is in apps/server/src/j5/cli/agentPath.ts, Lines 28–50.

Stack 4/5. Depends on #416.
Problem
Agents and terminals inherit the server's
PATH, so whether they could runj5depended on the person's shell setup. On a stock Mac they couldn't, and an agent that can't findj5tends to work around it without saying so. Part of #397.What changed
PATHfrom the login shell (fixPath()), a release server points<home>/bin/j5at its own executable. Then any server that finds aj5there, which includes the Mac app's server (feat(desktop): the Mac app gives its agents the j5 command #418), puts<home>/binfirst onPATH. Agents, terminals, and other children inherit it.j5. So what the server starts directly gets its server's CLI ahead of any otherj5, and the archive'st3link (feat(cli): the release executable is named j5 #414) is never on anyone'sPATH. A shell that re-reads the person's profile, as a terminal does, can put their own directories ahead again. Putting the executable's own directory there would have exposed that link.j5there and leavesPATHalone.j5 updatetyped inside J5: a barej5there is the agents' link.j5 updatenow skips that directory when it works out which link it was started through, so it repoints the person's own link. Before, it would have repointed the agents' link and left~/.local/bin/j5on the old version.<home>/bin/j5.This doesn't change the
