Embedded System Weighing Scale (Load Cell-Based)

Overview

This project implements a digital weighing scale system using a load cell sensor and embedded processing.

It demonstrates the full signal chain from analogue sensing → signal conditioning → digital processing, combining hardware and software to produce accurate weight measurements.

Features

  • Load cell-based weight sensing
  • Signal conditioning for low-level analogue signals
  • Microcontroller-based data acquisition and processing
  • Real-time weight measurement output
  • System calibration and validation
  • Integrated hardware and software design

System Architecture

The system is composed of multiple stages:

Sensing Stage

  • Load cell converts applied force into a small electrical signal
  • Produces low-level analogue voltage proportional to weight

Signal Conditioning

  • Amplification of the load cell output
  • Improves signal strength for accurate measurement
  • Reduces noise and stabilises readings

Data Acquisition & Processing

  • Microcontroller reads conditioned signal
  • Converts analogue signal to digital values
  • Applies scaling and calibration to output weight

Output Stage

  • Displays or transmits processed weight data
  • Provides real-time feedback to the user

System Operation

  1. Load is applied to the weighing platform
  2. Load cell generates a corresponding analogue signal
  3. Signal is amplified and conditioned
  4. Microcontroller processes and converts the signal
  5. Final weight value is output in real time

Testing & Validation

  • Calibrated system using known weights
  • Compared measured values with expected results
  • Analysed accuracy and repeatability
  • Refined system performance through iterative testing

Hardware Components

  • Load cell
  • Signal conditioning circuitry (amplifier)
  • Microcontroller (Arduino / similar)
  • Weighing platform and structural components
  • Power supply
