The game starts with a visual presentation of Psikyo, the publisher and developer company of Tengai that continues with a video showing a gameplay where we start to meet some characters and game mechanics. This video will keep looping unless the user inserts a coin (it can insert until 9 coin as maximum). In fact, all the time the video works, is showing in the center of the screen a message that asks the user to insert coins to start.

Start & Character Menu

Once the player has inserted a coin to play Tengai, it will appear in the middle of the screen a red "Start" button to press to start the game. As soon as the user press the button the select character menu will be appear with a countdown of nine seconds at the bottom of screen to choose any of five characters (six or seven if the player has Ayin and/or Marion).

UI Options & Settings

The Sega Saturn version provides an interestings options as choosing a difficulty level between 1 and 7, configure controls, set the amount of lives between 1 and 4, and more but MAME Emulator we have used can't show this setting screen so we don't know at all some options and can't confirm the following information we found is absolutely correct because we couldn't test it. According with our search, The option "Game Level" in first image allows the user choose seven different difficulty levels. "Demo mode" contains three game modes that allows to set animations, illustrations, etc. In "Option" the user can choose the amount of lives he wants to have his character between 1 and 4 in section "Fighters". The section "Extend" is related to the kind of puntuation which the user wants to play. Also there is a section for "audio" with two different modes and a "Key config" to configurate the keys.

In Game

The UI elements that form the HUD of Tengai during the gameplay are the followings: At the top left corner we can see the number of the player (always is located the first player in this corner) with the score and his lifes respectively in his right side. In case that there are two players, the second player is located on the opposite side. Bombs icons are always located bellow the number of player in the case of one player and the case of two players. This icon represents the powerful attack of the character which the user can use it if appears in this zone. At the right bottom we can observe the coins that player has inserted. The start button will be appear on right top corner but in the cooperative mode the start button doesn't appear because the zone is busy by second player UI icons like his score, lifes, etc.

Monologue & Team Dialogues

After completing each stage a dialogue box with the character user is playing appears. In this dialogue box the character talks to himself doing in this way a monologue. The cooperative mode has this dialogue box too but in this case, appears the two characters users who are keeping a conversation which sometimes is a bit humorous.

Game Over & Scores

When the player has lost all his lifes int the game, it will be appear the "Game Over" title with a transparent screen that contains advice and tips text for the next game and a "Continue?" title if you want to play another time. Below this screen there is a contdown of nine seconds to insert a coin and play again. If the player doesn't insert any coin the game ends and a ranking screen appears with the last games he played where we can see so much information like score of each game.

Game Completed & End

When the player ends up the second loop, instead of appearing the respective ending according to chosed route, a blue screen appears with the "End" message that makes the user understand that he has completed the game with the character he played.
