you can do that calling searchpos(), the results will contain [line, col], with the 'n' flag the cursor will not be moved. Could then setpos() for '< / '> marks and select them using the builtin mapping gv.

The advantage in that is that its arguably 'less work' i.e. just pattern matching, doesnt change the user's search, and if no region matched you wouldn't have to worry about restoring the cursor position.
