Login Fails with "Unexpected error" After the Latest WebApp Update

Hello,

I'm using Desktop version 3.40.5217 on Windows (with a personal account).

Yesterday there were 2 updates for the web version. I clicked on the first one, the desktop app restarted and everything was fine.
Later there was another one and after the app restart I can no longer log-in. The current version shown in the about window is Wire for web version 2025.07.18.14.08.31

When I start the app it asks me for login details but when I provide them I get "Unexpected error" as response.

If I enter a wrong password I'm getting: "Please verify your details and try again" as response.

I tried reinstalling the app - nothing changed.
I removed everything from "C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Wire" and it let me login fine (which is why I'm opening the issue here and not in the web app repo) but a new device was registered and I obviously have no history there.

I restored the copy I made of "C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Wire" before deleting it and I'm back to the "Unexpected error" on login.

I also renamed the IndexedDB folder inside "C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Wire" but then I got the error "You were signed out because your device was deleted.", so I closed the app and restored the original version of IndexedDB (and again I'm back to the "Unexpected error" on login).

How can this be fixed without losing my history from the past years?

I started the app with --enable-logging and got this in the console around the time I entered my password and pressed Enter:

Could't log out from meny but when I right clicked on my avatar I allowed me to log out. Seems I lost chat history on this device again. Starting to get annoyed with this situation. Would like to be able to recommend Wire when become CTO this autumn but this is just to sketchy...

App on iOS with correct login details is working perfectly.

I have the same problem - file version 3.40.5217.0.
(Logging in via browser and the Android app works.)

It's been almost a week and no response from the team.
Is the strategy here to stay silent until we get tired of waiting and continue without our history?

At the very least you should let us know if someone has even taken a look at the issue and whether it can be fixed or not...

And it's not that I'm too impatient but you're the ones who put a 2 week limit on offline messages, so if this isn't fixed in a week we'll be losing newly received messages since the issue occurred.

Not sure if this will help with anything, but I have 2 accounts in that client and both of them get the same error.

I don't know how exactly is the chat history stored, but in case it's separate, then it should still be intact and something else is broken.

Perhaps if we knew which files contain the chat history we could copy only them to a fresh install of the client?
