Register package with the general registry?

Any chance this package could be registered with the general registry (in addition to your private BoffinStuff registry)?

I just wanted to give this a bump: I still think it would be nice to register this package: it provides useful, self-contained functionality that otherwise requires very heavy dependencies (e.g. Nemo). Would you consider registering this in the general registry?

OTOH, you can never "de-register" a package from the general registry. Is there some functionality that Pkg.jl provides for packages in the General registry that it doesn't provide for other packages? I.e. other than not having to specify a long URL such as https://github.com/wildart/SmithNormalForm.jl?

As I understand it, it is impossible for any registered package to depend on an unregistered package. So, if, say, I depend on SmithNormalForm.jl (I do), I cannot register my package.

Another aspect is e.g. CI: e.g., to run CI for any package that depends on SmithNormalForm.jl, I have to first add the BoffinStuff registry in the CI script. It's just a bit of a headache to carry around. The only alternative is to vendor the whole package, but that has its own drawbacks.

I didn't intend to register this package for Julia's general registry. This package serves some of my research interests, and I don't have time support it. Thus, I saw no reason to put it in the general registry. Managing my own registry, allowed me better control on the version update cycle, and that was sufficient for me.

However, I understand your problem wanting to keep this package as a dependency. And, I think that Issue need to be addressed with the Julia package manager, Pkg.jl. Current third party registry support in the package manager is rudimentary, but given the time it can be improved.

Please, do not be discourage by my answer. The issue, you raised, will keep me motivated to find the solution.

No worries, that's understandable.

Would you mind if I vendored this package (i.e. just hard-copy it to a subdirectory, license included) in my package? That way I can still use the functionality but there's no maintenance debt on your part.

I wound't, so far the licence allows it.
