I've amended the Static HTML Export documentation to clarify new best practices and clear up some ambiguities and caveats. This should resolve most of the issues raised in vercel/documentation#534.

Can we still depend on exportPathMap and next export working into the future? We investigated getStaticProps/getStaticPaths for our large, CMS-driven, static site, but ran into some issues given the requirement of dynamic routes since we don't use next/router and we allow CMS pages to specify arbitrary URLs that don't jibe with dynamic routes. We've also invested in 'fine-grained exports' whereby we use some filtering options to only export the static pages that need to be updated, based on change events from our CMS, and we think this is a better fit for us than the fallback option.

Are we likely to be OK into the future or should we expect exportPathMap and next export to be fully deprecated at some point in the future. If we can lend a hand to keep this code path working I'd be happy to help.

@chrisrichard next export and exportPathMap won't be deprecated. Having that said I recommend you to look more into Dynamic Routes + SSG + Incremental Static Revalidation if you want to use our latest features!

Thanks @lfades. We do want to figure out a way to get aligned with the new features. We have a small number of Next pages that act as generic templates; content authors are able to choose arbitrary URLs in the CMS and have broad control over which components untimately get rendered on a given page. We mostly have different Next pages to expose different subsets/groupings of related components so that we don't lose the benefits of bundle splitting. As a result we use the same Next page to generate hundreds of pages, some of which have completely different URL structures. Any thoughts on how we can bridge this gap?

@lfades Thanks - we'll try it. Do you know if every catch-all route needs to be prefixed with with a non-parameterized part? i.e. can I have pages/[...path] and will that interfere with pages/blog/[...path], etc. ?
