Pausing a VM doesnt work with Apple Virtualization

Describe the issue
Basically it seems you cannot pause a VM and start it again if you use Apple Virtualization instead of QEMU.
i'm using utm version 4.5.3 on a Macbook Air M3. I installed Ubuntu ARM as a guest using apple virtualization but i have noticed that if i pause the VM and close the window and try to start it again it fails and i get an error saying: " An error occurred while restoring the virtual machine. The virtual machine failed to restore with error “invalid argument”. Looks like this is a bug??

Pausing VMs using QEMU works fine though.

Configuration

• UTM Version: 4.5.3
• macOS Version: Sonoma 14.6.1
• Mac Chip (Intel, M1, ...): M3
• VM: Ubuntu 24.0.1 ARM64

I’ve come across the same problem. I notice it when I close the VM window. It appears to be either pausing or stopping the VM when the window is closed. Then when trying to open the VM again, I get that error.

@okossuth I think the recent UTM update fixed this problem for me. Are you still experiencing this issue?

@cantchooseaname8 I haven't tried recently but which version of UTM are you using now? Also what version of MacOS?

I'm on the most recent version of MacOS which was still causing the same issue for me. However, the most recent update to UTM (4.6.3) seems like it's fixed now.

@cantchooseaname8 I can confirm that pausing/unpausing VMs using Apple Virtualization now works using latest UTM 4.6.3 on a Macbook Air M3 with MacOS Sonoma 14.7.1 👍

@cantchooseaname8 Bad news, i just found that unsuspending a VM after quiting UTM completely and starting it back fails! could you confirm that ???

Steps:

• Suspend the VM
• Close all UTM windows
• Quit UTM completely
• Start UTM back again
• Try starting the VM which is in suspended state, it should show you an error

Re-opening the issue for now :(

@cantchooseaname8 Found a workaround, disabling the entropy device in the VM virtualization settings will fix the problem apparently. Now suspending the VM and quitting/starting UTM and resuming the VM works

@okossuth I just tried pausing the vm (also tried just closing the window without pausing), closing the windows, quitting UTM, reopening UTM, starting the vm that was paused. I still don't get the error. I also still have the entropy device enabled. I wonder what's different that would cause the error for you.

@cantchooseaname8 maybe the MacOS version? I'm on Sonoma 14.7.1, or maybe the VM itself? What OS is your VM using?

I’m running the most recent version of Ubuntu desktop in the vm. It used to do it with both version 24 and 22 of Ubuntu but it seems to be fixed for me now.
