Compiler is out of memory

Description

I am editing a ~50 pages scientific paper with a lot of images in it. Recently I started experiencing "compiler out of memory" errors every few other edits.

Firefox process manager reports the typst process utilizes ~4GB of memory before OOM.

I've noticed that it happens more often, when I continue editing the page before previous edit was reflected in preview.

Unfortunately, until very recently WASM was limited to 4 GB of memory. Even now, support for 64 bit memory addressing is only present in newish versions of Firefox and Chrome, and not at all in Safari.

In your case I'd suggest either using typst locally, or make a draft version with placeholders

It's worth mentioning that Typst's incremental compilation is very memory-intensive and not yet optimized at all for memory usage. We plan to do that in the future (and there's been some work in that direction by a contributor), but it's not an immediate priority.

Out of curiosity, does Typst support 64 bit memory addressing in wasm? Or it still needs to be implemented even if supported by a browser.

It's not supported. It would need a separate wasm file and logic to select the correct one.
