GHC 8.8.4 not available on Mac OS M1 architecture

Describe the bug
The project seems a bit outdated. ghc 8.8.4 is not available for modern Macs (neither via ghcup nor nix).
Attempt to update the resolver to something supported results in quite a lot dependency problems which I was not able to fix.

There is already one PR #216 in the project which addresses some of the problems, however it is now almost a year old as well.

To Reproduce
Try to install a sample project via the cookiecutter template.

• OS name + version: Mac OS 14.5, M1
• Version of the code: generated by cookie cutter
