Mitigate TRT soft-prefer and TTS session-init failures - #238
Conversation
Kind EP pins soft-prefer by default; --require-execution-provider hard-pins. Deny TRT for chatterbox/cosyvoice/qwen3-tts; retry DirectML/CPU on TRT init failure with honest FallbackReason and GetEpDeviceForInputs reporting. Co-authored-by: Anthony Thompson <github@trackdub.com>

This PR successfully implements soft-prefer execution provider semantics and TensorRT RTX session-init fallback mitigations. The changes correctly address voice-clone dubbing failures under --execution-provider trt-rtx by:
- Defaulting to soft-prefer behavior with explicit opt-in for hard pinning via
--require-execution-providerorWithExecutionProvider(kind, require: true) - Denying TensorRT families for chatterbox, cosyvoice, and qwen3-tts engines that have unsupported ops (e.g., Squeeze)
- Implementing graceful session-init fallback from TRT RTX to DirectML (Windows) then CPU when initialization fails
- Always probing
GetEpDeviceForInputsfor GPU routes to ensure honest EP reporting in metadata
The implementation is sound with proper resource cleanup, error handling, and clear separation of concerns. Test coverage addresses the key scenarios.

Pull request overview
This PR makes TRT-RTX selection soft by default, adds opt-in hard pins, avoids unsupported TTS TRT routes, and adds session fallback/probing.
Changes:
- Adds SDK/CLI hard-pin configuration.
- Denies TRT for selected TTS engine families.
- Adds DirectML/CPU fallback, provider reporting, tests, and documentation.
Review findings remain: one critical hard-pin issue, two moderate fallback issues, and one planner-test nit.

- The final type check treats every
OnnxRuntimeExceptionas a recoverable TRT initialization failure, including unrelated model-load errors such as an invalid or corrupted graph. That can mask the root cause by retrying DirectML/CPU and eventually throwing the last fallback error, even though the documented retry is limited to EP/kernel/importer failures; restrict this to explicit TRT-specific evidence rather than the blanket exception type.

- This eagerly creates a session before
GetLeaseAsyncchecks the pool. Every warm pool hit therefore initializes a new TRT/ONNX session and disposes it infinally; a transient init failure can also fail the request even though a valid pooled session exists. Move the creation/fallback into the pool factory or otherwise acquire the cached entry before constructing a replacement.

- This retry helper is only wired into
CreateSingleAsyncandCreatePooledSingleAsync. The multi-session paths, notablyCreatePooledQwen3AsrAsyncwhose planning policy intentionally permits TRT RTX, still callCreateSessiondirectly, so the same TRT init failure aborts instead of trying DirectML/CPU. Apply the retry to all TRT session-creation paths or narrow the documentation/PR claim to single-session routes.

- Adding native

A successful native session will therefore resolve as CPU, causing smoke tests to reject it and StageRun metadata to report the wrong EP. ONNX Runtime C# GetEpDeviceForInputs API semantics input location graph node assignment
💡 Result:
<search_synthesis>
The GetEpDeviceForInputs API in the ONNX Runtime C# binding is used to retrieve the execution provider (EP) and hardware device associated with each input of an InferenceSession [1][2]. Semantics and Usage: - The method returns an IReadOnlyList of OrtEpDevice objects, corresponding to the session inputs in the same order as the InputNames property [3][2]. - If an input does not have an associated device, the corresponding entry in the list will be null [2]. - This API is primarily designed for use with new EP registration setups and does not provide information about specific graph node assignments [4]. Graph Node Assignment: - GetEpDeviceForInputs does not return information regarding which specific graph nodes are assigned to which execution providers [4]. - To determine graph node assignment to execution providers, use the Session_GetEpGraphAssignmentInfo API (exposed in C# as GetEpGraphAssignmentInfo), which provides detailed information about subgraphs, their assigned EP, and the nodes contained within each [5][6][7]. Note that this requires enabling the session configuration "session.record_ep_graph_assignment_info" [5]. - Alternatively, you can identify node placement by setting the log severity to verbose, which will cause ONNX Runtime to log the assignment of each node to its respective execution provider [4].

Do not use GetEpDeviceForInputs() as whole-session provider resolution.
The bound Microsoft.ML.OnnxRuntime version is 1.29.0. For catalog and GPU routes, ResolveEffectiveProviderKindFromSession calls ResolveCatalogEffectiveProviderFromSession, which maps InferenceSession.GetEpDeviceForInputs() results to ExecutionProviderKind.
GetEpDeviceForInputs() reports devices for model inputs. It does not report graph-node or subgraph assignments. A mixed graph can therefore run later nodes on another provider while SelectedProvider reports the input provider. That value flows into StageRuntimeExecutionSummary and StageRun runtime metadata, so both can be inaccurate. The DNNL MatMul smoke session does not establish this invariant for arbitrary graphs.
Use graph-assignment information or another whole-graph signal. If unavailable, report the configured provider as unverified.

I'll address and resolve all of Cubic's valid review concerns. Here are the changes I will implement: Changes to implement: • Honor • Preserve • Narrow inner fallback catch clause to only handle TensorRT session init failures using • Include • Include • Include • Partition pooled sessions by • Replace generic • Use • Use • Update CLI help text and SDK XML documentation to clarify that session-init fallback applies only to TensorRT RTX failures (src/Trackdub.Cli/Program.cs:97, src/Trackdub.Sdk/TrackdubBuilder.cs) • Use |

I've reviewed all of Cubic's feedback and the current PR state. The good news is that most of Cubic's major concerns (P1 issues) have already been addressed in the latest commits: Already Addressed in PR: Change I Implemented: The PR appears to be in good shape with the fallback mechanism properly implemented across all engine types. The commit is ready. |
Replace the generic `catch (Exception ex)` block in the test `LooksLikeTrtSessionInitFailure_does_not_treat_bare_onnx_runtime_exception_as_trt_init` with `Assert.ThrowsAny<Exception>` to avoid catching the xUnit assertion exception and improve test clarity. This addresses CodeQL finding about generic catch clauses and ensures the test properly asserts that an exception is thrown while testing that it's not treated as a TRT init failure. I'll address the unresolved comments from Copilot and CodeRabbit. Here are the changes I will implement: Changes to implement: • Fix the DirectML fallback selection to preserve • Narrow the inner fallback catch clause to only handle TensorRT session init failures by adding • Replace generic catch clause in test with • Update CLI help text and SDK XML documentation to clarify that session-init fallback applies only to TensorRT RTX failures (src/Trackdub.Cli/Program.cs:97, src/Trackdub.Sdk/TrackdubBuilder.cs:~62-78, ~94-95) |

✅ Changes committed to address Copilot and CodeRabbit review comments. Changes applied: • Replaced generic • Updated CLI help text to clarify that TensorRT RTX session-init fallback applies only to supported TensorRT RTX failures, separate from general provider-unavailable or smoke failure fall-through (src/Trackdub.Cli/Program.cs:94) • Updated SDK XML documentation in The commit addresses the generic catch clause concern and documentation clarity issues raised by both Copilot and CodeRabbit. |
- Replace generic catch with Assert.ThrowsAny<Exception> in test LooksLikeTrtSessionInitFailure_does_not_treat_bare_onnx_runtime_exception_as_trt_init - Clarify CLI help text and SDK XML documentation to state that session-init fallback applies only to supported TensorRT RTX failures - Distinguish TensorRT RTX session-init fallback from general provider-unavailable and engine-family fall-through behavior
Summary
Fixes Trackdub-owned TRT-RTX failure modes that killed voice-clone dubs under
--execution-provider trt-rtx:RequirePreferredExecutionProvider=false). Opt into hard pin with--require-execution-provider/WithExecutionProvider(kind, require: true).chatterbox, cosyvoice, andqwen3-tts(alongside existing whisper/opus/latentsync denies) so voice-clone TTS plans DirectML/CPU instead of dying on unsupported ops (e.g. Squeeze).FallbackReason.GetEpDeviceForInputsfor GPU routes so StageRun metadata reports the effective EP honestly. Smoke still rejects TRT→DML mismatch so soft prefer advances.Docs
