JSON is a nice little format. However, using it outside of JavaScript domain reveals numerous limitations. Here I present RON - yet another JSON alternative, which is:
- also a text
- also self-describing
- supports structs and enums
- but still very simple!

Notice these issues:
- Struct and maps are the same
- random order of exported fields
- annoying and inconvenient for reading
- doesn't work well with version control - quoted field names
- too verbose - no support for enums
- No trailing comma allowed
- No comments allowed

The new format uses (
..)
brackets for heterogeneous structures (classes), while preserving the {
..}
for maps, and [
..]
for homogeneous structures (arrays). This distinction allows to solve the biggest problem with JSON.
Here are the general rules to parse the heterogeneous structures:

I have a scene exporter from Blender, where the result is loaded by the Rust code. The scene structure I'd like to see with my eyes, thus text form is preferred, while mesh contents and animation curves are passed in a custom binary format. I used JSON for the scene format, since it's been well-supported in Rust, but it proved to be inconvenient. I also tried to generate Rust code directly, but this approach has other major problems. I looked elsewere and didn't find anything good enough, so I made my own.
Why not XML?
- too verbose
- unclear how to treat attributes vs contents

- significant white-space
- specification is too big
Why not TOML?
- alien syntax
- absolute paths are not scalable
