feat(site): the search API in OpenAPI with JSON errors, WebMCP tools, and richer structured data - #10
Conversation
…t wrong in JSON The site's one HTTP API, /api/search, is what its search box calls. An agent that went looking for an API found it undocumented, answering a bad request with an empty list and an unknown address with an HTML page. - /openapi.json describes it: operation searchDocs, typed parameters, the result and error schemas. It says Thaw itself is driven through thaw:// links on the Mac, not over HTTP. - A missing query or a bad limit is a 400, another method a 405, and any other address under /api a 404, each as RFC 9457 problem JSON with a code and what to do. - /.well-known/api-catalog (RFC 9727) and an ARD catalog at /.well-known/ard.json (and ai-catalog.json) list the API and the skills. The home page's Link header names the spec and the catalog, and llms.txt the API. Signed-off-by: René Jiménez <diazdesandi@proton.me>
…gh WebMCP Every page registers two read-only tools with document.modelContext (WebMCP, a W3C draft that Chrome and ChatGPT's browser are trying): search_thaw_docs, on the search API, and read_thaw_page, which fetches a page as Markdown. A browser without WebMCP runs none of it. Signed-off-by: René Jiménez <diazdesandi@proton.me>
…e and its other homes The home page's data adds the four questions at its foot as FAQPage, in the words on the page, a WebSite entry, and sameAs links to the app on GitHub, Raycast and Product Hunt. Signed-off-by: René Jiménez <diazdesandi@proton.me>

Advertise the catalog in its HEAD response.
RFC 9727 requires HEAD /.well-known/api-catalog to include a Link header with the api-catalog relation. Next.js 16.4.0 implements an omitted HEAD handler by calling GET. This GET response sets no Link header, so HEAD discovery misses the catalog relation. Add a HEAD handler or set the header on GET. (rfc-editor.org)

Add a handler for bare /api.
app/api/[...path]/route.ts does not match /api without a path segment. No app/api/route.ts exists. Add a base-path handler that returns the same JSON not_found response as missing.

🌐 Web query:
fumadocs-core 16.16.2 createFromSource search server GET empty query
💡 Result:
If you’re asking what happens when you call the `GET` handler from `createFromSource(source)` with an empty query: the current docs establish that this creates the search route, but they **don’t specify how an empty or missing `q` is handled**. ([fumadocs.dev](https://www.fumadocs.dev/docs/headless/search/orama?utm_source=openai))
I couldn’t verify that behavior against the published `fumadocs-core@16.16.2` implementation, so I can’t say whether it returns empty results, an error, or another response. The docs also mention empty-query fallback links in the **UI**, but that’s separate from server behavior. ([v14.fumadocs.dev](https://v14.fumadocs.dev/docs/ui/search?utm_source=openai))

Reject empty queries before delegating to server.GET.
?query= passes params.has('query'), but fumadocs-core@16.16.2 returns Response.json([]) for the empty value. This returns 200 application/json instead of the documented 400 application/problem+json response and violates the OpenAPI minLength: 1 contract.

Reject paths that resolve outside this site.
//other.example/page passes startsWith('/'), but the browser resolves it to another origin. If that origin permits the response to be read, read_thaw_page returns its content as a site page. Resolve the address against location.origin and reject it unless the resolved origin matches. (url.spec.whatwg.org)

Add Allow to the 405 response.
When /api/search rejects POST, PUT, PATCH, or DELETE, wrongMethod returns 405 without identifying the allowed methods. HTTP requires an Allow header on a 405 response. Set it to GET, HEAD, OPTIONS for this route; Next.js implements HEAD from GET and supplies OPTIONS. (rfc-editor.org)
