i'm not sure. does the simulator work from xcode?

@aksonov try upgrading appium to the latest version (1.5.1 currently). That fixed it for me. I believe issue was because I was using the latest version of Xcode (7.3 currently), which older versions of Appium appear to not be compatible with.
