What and why

On main, the commands that store colors read keepModel with bool_or, which falls back to false for a value that is not true or false. In a CMYK document, paint.setFill {"color": "#ff0000", "keepModel": "true"} stores the color as CMYK, and the call reports success. The Fill/Stroke proxy commands read their on/off params the same way: paint.toggleActive {"fill": "true"} brings the Stroke proxy forward when the Fill proxy is in front, and paint.setStroke {"color": "#0000ff", "focus": "false"} brings the Stroke proxy forward. The Color Settings help page, which covers the reference app as well as Photoshop, says "the document uses the working space profile associated with its color mode for creating and editing colors" (Color settings).

  • These keys fail with "<key> must be true or false" for a value that is not true, false or null, the message the grid and overprint commands give (crates/engine/src/cmd/create.rs:423, overprint.rs:124): keepModel in paint.setFill, paint.setStroke, appearance.setItem, livePaint.fill, livePaint.strokeEdge, a shapeBuilder.merge fill object, symbol.adjust, text.create, text.createInPath, text.setStyle, text.setRangeStyle, paint.editGradient, paint.freeform.addPoint and setPoint, object.mesh.setPointColor and addLine, swatch.new, swatch.newGroup, swatch.edit (also inside its paint) and swatch.editGroup; fill in paint.toggleActive; stroke in paint.invert, paint.complement, paint.lastColor and paint.lastGradient; focus in paint.setFill and paint.setStroke; and none in those two and in appearance.setItem, livePaint.fill, livePaint.strokeEdge, a shapeBuilder.merge fill object, swatch.new and swatch.edit's paint. The document, its undo history and the defaults for new art stay as they were. A null is read as a key left out.
  • paint.setFill {"none": "true"} was refused with "give color, none, swatch or gradient". It now gets the true-or-false message.
  • docs/target-app-parity.md has one line for the change. The true-or-false message already has a row in every complete catalog. The change adds no new message text and no catalog rows.

How it was tested

New tests in vectorcraft-engine, each failing on main, where the first call succeeds:

  • tests_eyedropper::the_paint_commands_refuse_a_keep_model_given_as_text gives keepModel as a string, a number or an array to the fill, stroke, Appearance, Live Paint and Shape Builder commands in a CMYK document; the objects, the defaults for new art and the undo history stay as they were, and a null keepModel stores the color as CMYK.
  • tests_eyedropper::the_type_commands_refuse_a_keep_model_given_as_text gives keepModel as a string, a number or an array to text.create, text.createInPath, text.setStyle and text.setRangeStyle; the document and the undo history stay as they were, and a null keepModel stores the color as CMYK.
  • tests_eyedropper::the_gradient_and_mesh_commands_refuse_a_keep_model_given_as_text gives keepModel as a string, a number or an array to paint.editGradient, the freeform point commands and the gradient mesh commands; the document and the undo history stay as they were, and a null keepModel stores the color as CMYK.
  • tests_brushsym::symbol_stainer_refuses_a_keep_model_given_as_text gives keepModel as a string, a number or an array to the Symbol Stainer; the instance and the undo history stay as they were, and a null keepModel stores the color as CMYK.
  • tests_swatchcmds::the_swatch_commands_refuse_a_keep_model_given_as_text gives keepModel as a string, a number or an array to swatch.new (also with mode), swatch.newGroup, swatch.edit (also inside paint) and swatch.editGroup; the document and the undo history stay as they were, and a null keepModel stores the color as CMYK.
  • tests_paintproxy::proxy_commands_refuse_a_boolean_given_as_text gives fill, stroke, focus and none as a string, a number or an array, with the object selected and with nothing selected; the object, the defaults, the proxy in front and the undo history stay as they were, and a null fill, focus or none is read as left out.
  • tests_paintproxy::the_commands_that_take_a_paint_refuse_a_none_given_as_text gives none as a string, a number or an array to appearance.setItem, livePaint.fill, livePaint.strokeEdge, a shapeBuilder.merge fill object, swatch.new and swatch.edit's paint; the document, the defaults for new art and the undo history stay as they were, and a null none is read as left out.

Targeted checks while building: cargo clippy -p vectorcraft-engine --all-targets -- -D warnings; cargo test -p vectorcraft-engine --lib and --test command_sweep; cargo test -p vectorcraft-ui-egui --lib i18n; cargo fmt --all -- --check; cargo xtask brands, layers and assets.

On Windows 11 (x86-64) with rustc 1.99.1, on top of main at bc1ae08:

  • CRAFT_FONTS_DIR=<craft-fonts checkout> cargo xtask ci passes its 10 steps: 8,577 tests passed, 0 failed, 13 ignored.

git merge-tree reports no conflicts with main at bc1ae08. #3290, #3266 (crates/engine/src/cmd/live.rs), #2326 (paint.rs), #3292 and #2057 also change these files and merge with this branch there; cargo check -p vectorcraft-engine --tests passes on the branch merged with each. #1987 (paint.rs) conflicts with main at bc1ae08 in crates/doc/src/hit.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/object.rs and six other files; merging this branch with it gives the same conflicts and no new ones.

Checklist

  • cargo xtask ci passes (fmt, clippy, tests, assets, brands, layers, wasm).
  • No panics in shipped code: no unwrap(), expect(), panic!, unreachable!, todo! or
unimplemented! outside tests, and no unchecked indexing on data from files, parameters or
messages. Errors are returned as Result and shown to the user
    (why and how).
  • Clean-room: nothing copied from Adobe products or GPL/AGPL code (AGENTS.md).
  • Every new asset has a row in ASSETS.md.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Enforced strict boolean validation for keepModel, fill, stroke, focus, and none options across paint, appearance, text, gradient, mesh, Live Paint, Shape Builder, Symbol Stainer, and swatch commands.
    • Invalid values are rejected without changing document state, defaults, or undo history.
    • null or omitted options continue to use default behavior.
  • Documentation

    • Documented accepted values and validation behavior for affected commands.

The commands that store colors read keepModel with bool_or, which falls
back to false for a value that is not true or false. In a CMYK
document, paint.setFill {"color": "#ff0000", "keepModel": "true"}
stored the color as CMYK, and the call reported success.
appearance.setItem, livePaint.fill and livePaint.strokeEdge, a
shapeBuilder.merge fill, symbol.adjust, the type commands,
paint.editGradient, the freeform point commands, the gradient mesh
commands and the swatch commands read keepModel the same way.
paint.toggleActive read fill the same way. Invert, Complement, Apply
Last Color and Apply Last Gradient read stroke, and paint.setFill and
paint.setStroke read focus. Those two, appearance.setItem,
livePaint.fill, livePaint.strokeEdge, a shapeBuilder.merge fill object,
swatch.new and swatch.edit's paint read none the same way.
paint.setFill and paint.setStroke refused a none given as "true" as if
no paint had been given.

These commands now fail with "`<key>` must be true or false", the
message the grid and overprint commands give, for a value that is not
true, false or null. They leave the document, its undo history and the
defaults for new art as they were. A null is read as a key left out.

📝 Walkthrough

Paint-related commands now reject invalid boolean values instead of silently using defaults. The keepModel option is validated across paint, appearance, text, swatch, and other paint-consuming commands. Tests verify invalid inputs leave document state and undo history unchanged.

Changes: Paint parameter validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Strict paint parameter parsing
crates/engine/src/cmd/paint.rs, crates/engine/src/tests_paintproxy.rs
Paint commands strictly validate boolean parameters, including fill, stroke, focus, none, and keepModel. Proxy commands use this validation, and tests cover invalid values and null defaults.
keepModel validation across paint commands
crates/engine/src/cmd/appearance.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/brushsym.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/buildcmds.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/freeform.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/gradient.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/live.rs, crates/engine/src/tests_brushsym.rs, crates/engine/src/tests_eyedropper.rs, docs/target-app-parity.md
Appearance, Live Paint, Shape Builder, gradient, freeform, mesh, and Symbol Stainer commands validate keepModel before processing. Tests cover invalid values, unchanged state, and null defaults. The parity documentation records the validation rules.
Text and swatch validation
crates/engine/src/cmd/create.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/textedit.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/typecmd.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/swatch.rs, crates/engine/src/tests_eyedropper.rs, crates/engine/src/tests_swatchcmds.rs
Text and swatch commands validate keepModel before applying changes. Tests cover invalid values, unchanged state, and null defaults.

Change: Bug fix

Suggested reviewers: bflatastic

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to f1961

swatch.new can still accept an invalid none value when colors or an existing pattern is supplied, which contradicts the new validation behavior. The effect is limited to a malformed-input edge case and is easy to fix before or after merge.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to f1961

The change narrows accepted inputs rather than granting additional access. Examined rejection paths preserve paint state and undo history. The main risk is compatibility for callers that previously supplied malformed boolean values.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The examined mutation scope includes targeted document objects or text ranges, defaults for newly created artwork, active paint-proxy state and remembered paint within the existing session. The shared parser propagates the contract change to multiple command consumers.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — The relevant changed control is parameter validation, not authentication or authorization. Malformed options that previously selected fallback behavior now fail before the examined mutation paths; command ownership and entrypoint registration remain unchanged.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Existing test assertions cover preservation of redo/history for no-op proxy operations and remembered-color recovery after preview cancellation or failure. They support recovery containment but do not directly measure notifications or exhaustive concurrent behavior.

Validate none before selecting the swatch source.

swatch.new validates keepModel, but the colors and existing-pattern arms bypass paint_from. Therefore, none: "true" is not read or validated, and the command can create the swatch. Apply the same boolean validation used by paint_from before the source match. Do not use the validation result to change source selection for valid values.
