What and why

A paragraph with one character in a different type size was broken with the Single-line Composer, even when Every-line was chosen: compose_para gave up whenever the paragraph's glyphs did not all have the same line metrics (crates/text/src/layout.rs:1660-1663 on main). The reference app's Every-line Composer "considers a network of break points for a range of lines. Thus, it can optimize earlier lines in the paragraph to eliminate especially unattractive breaks later on" (Hyphenation and line breaks, "Every-line Composer"). The page states no rule about type sizes, and the rule below is VectorCraft's own.

  • In rectangular area type without text wrap, rows and columns included, the width of a line does not depend on how far down the frame it is. There the Every-line Composer composes a paragraph whose characters differ in line metrics (type size, font, leading or vertical scale, or an inline graphic taller than the text), and each line takes its height from its own text. The condition is the one vertical alignment uses for such frames (layout.rs:654).
  • Area type of another shape, or with text wrap, still breaks such a paragraph with the Single-line Composer.
  • docs/mcp.md's Paragraph composer section and one line in docs/target-app-parity.md describe the new rule, and the Type core row of docs/target-app-parity.md's missing-items table now limits "mixed type sizes in a paragraph still break single-line" to non-rectangular area type and text wrap. No command, params text or catalog row changes.

How it was tested

tests_combos::composer_x_mixed_sizes (vectorcraft-text) sets one 24 pt word among 12 pt text, and fails on main. It checks that the Every-line Composer gives the same breaks as for uniform 12 pt text in which that word is set at 200% horizontal scale, as wide as at 24 pt, that these differ from the Single-line Composer's, that the same holds with one line in each of two columns, and that the 24 pt word's line is taller. It also checks that a frame with a cut corner and a rectangle with text wrap break the mixed sizes as the Single-line Composer does, and still break the uniform sizes as the Every-line Composer does. tests_combos::composer_x_mixed_line_metrics checks the Every-line and Single-line breaks with that word set at 200% vertical scale, with 30 pt leading, or in Source Serif 4, and with an inline graphic raised above the text in its place; each of the four fails on main.

Targeted checks on the final tree: cargo clippy -p vectorcraft-text --all-targets -- -D warnings; cargo fmt --all -- --check; cargo test -p vectorcraft-text; cargo xtask brands, layers and assets.

On Windows 11 (x86-64) with rustc 1.99.0, on top of main at bc1ae082:

  • CRAFT_FONTS_DIR=<craft-fonts checkout> cargo xtask ci passes its 10 steps: 8,573 tests passed, 0 failed, 13 ignored.
  • Without CRAFT_FONTS_DIR, cargo test --workspace --no-fail-fast: 8,571 tests passed, 0 failed, 13 ignored.

git merge-tree reports no conflicts with main at bc1ae082.

Checklist

  • cargo xtask ci passes (fmt, clippy, tests, assets, brands, layers, wasm).
  • No panics in shipped code: no unwrap(), expect(), panic!, unreachable!, todo! or
unimplemented! outside tests, and no unchecked indexing on data from files, parameters or
messages. Errors are returned as Result and shown to the user
    (why and how).
  • Clean-room: nothing copied from Adobe products or GPL/AGPL code (AGENTS.md).
  • Every new asset has a row in ASSETS.md.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved paragraph composition in rectangular text areas when lines use different font sizes, fonts, leading, vertical scaling, or taller inline graphics.
    • Prevented lines from starting with spaces and improved consistency of line breaks across widths and justification settings.
    • Non-rectangular areas and wrapped text continue using single-line composition when mixed metrics are present.
  • Documentation

    • Updated text composition guidance for rectangular, non-rectangular, and wrapped text areas.

… in rectangular area type

A paragraph with one character in a different type size was broken
with the Single-line Composer, even when Every-line was chosen: the
composer gave up whenever the paragraph's glyphs did not all have the
same line metrics (ascent, descent, leading, cap height, x height and
em box top).

In rectangular area type without text wrap, rows and columns included,
the width of a line does not depend on how far down the frame it is.
There the Every-line Composer now composes a paragraph whose
characters differ in line metrics (type size, font, leading or
vertical scale, or an inline graphic taller than the text), and each
line takes its height from its own text, as with the Single-line
Composer. Area type of another shape, or with text wrap, still breaks
such a paragraph with the Single-line Composer.

📝 Walkthrough

Paragraph composition now uses EveryLine for rectangular regions without text wrap when glyph metrics differ. Non-rectangular regions and text-wrapped regions retain the SingleLine fallback. Breakpoints no longer occur before spaces. Tests and documentation cover the behavior.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in docs/mcp.md: Changed mixed-metric paragraph handling from always falling back to Single-line to using Every-line in rectangular area text, including rows and columns; non-rectangular area text and text wrap still use Single-line.
  • observed — Modified behavior in docs/target-app-parity.md: The Type core gap description now includes mixed type sizes breaking single-line composition in non-rectangular area type and text-wrap cases.
  • observed — Modified behavior in docs/target-app-parity.md: Documents Every-line Composer behavior for paragraphs with differing line metrics in rectangular area type, and the fallback to Single-line Composer for other shapes or text-wrapped paragraphs.
  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/text/src/layout.rs: Expanded the candidates documentation to state that breaks do not occur before spaces and that line endings include following spaces, matching break_line.

The composer offered a break after a dash, a Thai word or a space even when
a space came next, so it could start the next line with that space. A
leading space makes the next line wider, and the composer could score that
break better. With mixed type sizes now composed in rectangular area type,
Thai text whose words come from a Thai font broke as "สวัสดีครับ" and
" ภาษาไทยง่าย". The composer now offers only the break after the spaces,
as the single-line composer ends its lines.

FreeBSD failed tests::thai_lines_break_between_words on 73368599: the lines were สวัสดีครับ, ภาษาไทยง่าย and นิดเดียว, so the second line started with a space. With craft-fonts at a71c20e3, which adds Noto Sans Thai, the Thai words and the space come from different fonts, so this branch now composes that paragraph with the Every-line Composer. The composer offered a break before a space that follows a Thai word, a dash or another space, and a leading space made the next line wider, which the composer could score better. main passes the test with the same fonts, and this branch passed it without that font.

3ae934c4 stops candidates from offering a break before a space, so the line ends after the spaces, as with the Single-line Composer. tests_combos::composer_x_lines_start_after_the_spaces lays out text with em dashes and a double space at widths from 40 to 396 pt, ragged and justified, at 12 pt and with a 24 pt word, and checks that no line starts with a space. It fails without the fix under the built-in fonts, at 12 pt as well. thai_lines_break_between_words fails on 73368599 with craft-fonts at a71c20e3 and passes on 3ae934c4.

On Windows 11 (x86-64) with rustc 1.99.0, on top of main at bc1ae082, with CRAFT_FONTS_DIR at craft-fonts a71c20e3, cargo xtask ci passes its 10 steps: 8,573 tests passed, 0 failed, 13 ignored. cargo test -p vectorcraft-text passes with a craft-fonts checkout without Noto Sans Thai and without CRAFT_FONTS_DIR (290 passed, 0 failed, 1 ignored each). The branch still merges cleanly with main at bc1ae082.

Add geometry assertions to composer_x_mixed_line_metrics.

This test currently compares only line_texts, so a regression in per-line ascent, descent, baseline spacing, or inline-art bounds can preserve the expected breaks and still pass. Assert the relevant LineInfo fields and inline bounds for the Composer::EveryLine cases. The existing ascent check covers only the 24 pt case in composer_x_mixed_sizes; the other geometry tests do not exercise this mixed-metric Every-line path.

The composer_x_mixed_line_metrics test should validate geometry in addition to
line breaks for Composer::EveryLine. Assert the relevant LineInfo ascent,
descent, baseline spacing, and inline-art bounds for each mixed-metric case,
using the expected values or relationships established by nearby geometry tests;
leave the SingleLine text assertions unchanged.
