Summary

This PR resolves issues where open paths within compound paths could not be continued or closed with the Pen tool (P), nor joined via Path Join (Cmd+J / path.join).

Details

  1. Pen tool continuation & closing on compound paths (Pen tool: unable to continue drawing or close open paths inside a compound path #3274):

    • When a single compound path containing an open member path is selected, the Pen tool resolves the open member path as the active drawing path.
    • Pen hit-testing in open_end_at checks visible member paths of selected objects, allowing clicking the open endpoint of an unclosed compound path to continue drawing from it, or clicking the other open endpoint to close the path.
    • Deactivating the Pen tool restores selection to the compound path container.
  2. Joining endpoints of open paths in compound paths (Path Join (Cmd+J) and Pen tool: cannot join open endpoints of a compound path #3276):

    • crates/engine/src/cmd/path.rs: updated selected_paths and join to handle NodeKind::Compound.
    • When endpoints of subpaths within a compound path are direct-selected (via Direct Selection tool A), join connects those specific endpoints with a segment.
    • If a compound path with two open member paths is selected as a whole without direct anchor selection, join connects their closest endpoints.
    • Preserves compound path hierarchy and restores selection to the parent compound path container.

Testing

  • Added unit & integration tests in crates/engine/src/tests_draw2.rs:
    • compound_path_pen_continue_and_close: tests continuing drawing from an open compound path endpoint and clicking the opposite endpoint to close it.
    • compound_path_pen_continue_and_join: tests continuing an open compound path endpoint and clicking an endpoint of another open subpath to connect them.
    • compound_path_join_command: tests path.join command on a compound path with two open subpaths.
    • compound_path_join_direct_selected_endpoints: tests path.join respecting direct-selected anchors on compound path subpaths.
  • All 10 CI quality gates pass (cargo xtask ci).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • The Pen tool can continue open paths within groups and compound paths.
    • Path joining supports open child paths inside compound objects, including explicitly selected endpoints.
    • Closing and joining paths can identify suitable endpoints automatically while preserving compound-path selection.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved selection behavior for compound paths.
    • Invalid compound selections and joins involving more than two paths are now rejected.
    • Improved handling of joined subpaths and compound-path closure.

📝 Walkthrough

PenTool can resume, close, and join open child paths in compound paths. path.join resolves selected or explicit compound paths, chooses endpoints, merges at most two paths, and preserves compound-parent selection. Tests cover these operations.

Changes: Compound Path Editing

Layer / File(s) Summary
PenTool endpoint discovery and continuation
crates/tools/src/pen.rs, crates/engine/src/tests_draw2.rs
PenTool finds eligible open endpoints in visible paths and compound-path descendants. It resumes child paths, recognizes selected compound parents as active, and restores parent selection after continuation or deactivation.
Join and close compound child paths
crates/engine/src/cmd/path.rs, crates/engine/src/tests_draw2.rs
path.join resolves selected and explicit compound paths to open child paths. It selects endpoints, joins at most two paths, closes single paths, updates compound structure, and preserves compound-parent selection. Tests cover continuation, repeated joining, endpoint order, explicit IDs, and validation.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 5a2a7

Pen continuation and Cmd+J now work on open paths inside compound paths. Two edge cases still misbehave. Continuing a compound member that has several open subpaths can extend a subpath other than the one clicked. A scripted join with explicit IDs can also pick ends from the current direct selection instead of the documented nearest pair. Review these before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 5a2a7

The change is confined to document editing, but compound-child resolution can bypass locked or hidden child protections. Existing undo and rollback mechanisms limit the impact. No broader privilege or service exposure has been established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · architecture · inferred: Compound-to-child resolution does not consistently preserve descendant editability controls. An editable compound with one locked or hidden open child can enter Pen continuation through active_path; the active fallback bypasses the remembered-child editability guard, allowing reverse, append, or close actions. path.join also expands compound selections without filtering child editability. This introduces document-local control drift, not demonstrated privilege escalation.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is mutation of descendant geometry in the active document through existing path commands. It requires a compound selection and editing interaction; the inspected flow does not establish cross-user, cross-document, credential, or infrastructure authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A selected editable compound can contain an independently locked or hidden child. If that child is the sole open member, endpoint continuation can resolve it despite those flags, and subsequent drawing can reach mutators that do not recheck editability. This is an editing-policy bypass; an adversarial remote-entry path has not been established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The strongest countercontrols are editable-only endpoint discovery and the remembered-child editability check. They do not cover every route: active falls back to active_path after its guarded branch fails, and descendant flags do not make an otherwise editable parent uneditable.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Transactional restoration and undo contain document damage from failed or unwanted mutations, but do not prevent a successful mutation from bypassing locked or hidden editing protections.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep explicit ids matched one-to-one with ends when a compound ID is expanded.

Explicit ids now expand a compound into all of its open children. The command still joins only resolved[0] and resolved[1], and it applies ends to those two. This causes three wrong results:

  • With {"ids": [cid, p], "ends": [...]} and a compound that has two open children, the command joins the two children. It ignores p. It applies ends to paths the caller did not name.
  • With {"ids": [cid, cid]}, the duplicate check at line 534 is bypassed. The command joins the children and does not return "join two different paths".
  • With three or more open children, the command joins the first two in document order. selected_paths picks the nearest pair in that case, so the two paths disagree.

Two fixes are possible:

  • Require each compound ID to resolve to exactly one open child when ids.len() == 2.
  • Accept a lone compound ID only. Route it through the same nearest-pair logic as selected_paths, then extract a shared helper.

In both cases, return bad(C, ...) when resolved.len() > 2. Also update the path.join params doc for compound IDs. As per coding guidelines, every command needs its "params doc" kept current: "User-visible behaviour = a command in crates/engine/src/cmd/* (id, label, menu path, shortcut, params doc, enabled, run) + tests."

Select the compound parent on deactivate only when the tracked child is still the selection.

deactivate uses self.path before stop() clears it. The selection state is not checked. self.path stays Some while drawing is true until the next pointer Down calls stop(). Suppose the user draws in a compound child, selects another object (Layers panel, menu command, MCP), and then presses Enter/Escape or switches tools. deactivate then runs select.set on the compound and replaces the user's new selection.

In the normal flow the selection is already [parent], so the extra select.set does nothing. Run it only when the selection is still the child path alone.

Accept only a compound parent's selection in active.

Line 526 treats the path as active when its parent of any kind is the only selected object. Consider a path inside a group: the Pen continues it, and line 335 selects the path itself because the parent is not a compound. If the user then selects the group, active still returns the path. The Pen then keeps adding anchors to it, though the struct doc says "another path selected meanwhile isn't drawn on". deactivate and the select.set at lines 331-336 handle only NodeKind::Compound parents, so this check does not match them.

Exclude guide paths from Pen continuation candidates.

When guides are enabled, hit testing can return a visible, unlocked guide path. endpoint_on accepts it, even though shown_paths excludes guides. The Pen can then show a continuation cursor and send path.appendAnchor for the guide. path_mut accepts every NodeKind::Path, including guide paths, so the continuation can edit an ineligible path.

Read direct-selected ends only when ids is missing, or update the ends default in the params doc.

The direct_ends block runs whenever ends is missing. It also runs when the caller passes explicit ids. The current direct selection can then choose which ends get joined. The params doc at Line 77 states only "default: the nearest pair".

Example: a control-channel or MCP caller sends {"ids": [a, b]} and expects the nearest-pair join. If an endpoint of a and an endpoint of b are direct-selected, the command joins those endpoints. The caller receives a different geometry than the params doc promises.

Read the direct selection only when ids is missing. Also update the ends default text so it describes the selection-based inference.

🐛 Proposed fix
-            let direct_ends = if ends.is_none() {
+            let direct_ends = if ends.is_none() && p.get("ids").is_none() {

Update the params doc at Line 77:

-... (which end of each path to join, as the Pen joins them; default: the nearest pair) ...
+... (which end of each path to join, as the Pen joins them; default: without ids, the direct-selected end of each path, else the nearest pair) ...

As per coding guidelines, every command needs its "params doc" kept current: "User-visible behaviour = a command in crates/engine/src/cmd/* (id, label, menu path, shortcut, params doc, enabled, run) + tests."

Pick the directly selected end on the join subpath, and keep the other open subpaths.

path.join chooses the open subpath of each child by position, not by the selected anchor. When a selected endpoint lies on a later open subpath, the join ignores it and merges the wrong subpaths.

For a compound member with several open subpaths, direct_ends picks sa and sb as the first open subpath (position(|s| !s.closed)). It accepts a direct selection only when the selected anchor is at (sa, 0) or (sa, last). A selected endpoint on a later open subpath returns None, so the join falls back to closest-pair inference over the same first open subpaths. The edit then writes the merged result into pa.subpaths[sa] and calls d.remove(b). That call removes the whole consumed child, including any other open subpaths it contains.

Expected result: the user selects an endpoint on a later open subpath. Cmd+J joins a different endpoint pair. Other open subpaths of the consumed child are deleted.

Fix direction: have the endpoint lookup return the selected subpath index for each path, and use those indices in the join edit. Keep unconsumed subpaths when a child is removed. The Pen tool needs a separate subpath-aware correction.

Keep the clicked subpath as the active subpath.

When a compound child contains multiple open subpaths, endpoint_on can find an endpoint on an earlier subpath, but it returns only the path ID. active then chooses the last open subpath. The next Pen action operates on that subpath instead of the one clicked. Carry the subpath index through endpoint discovery and continuation, and use it for subsequent edits.
