Question on Drilling M3 Insert and Nut #67

Wouldn't I need to use at least a 3mm bit to remove the threads to prevent snags? How important is this diameter for reliability?
I am trying to picture how it works. If I cut a 1.75mm diameter filament then I would think any diameter less than two widths of the filament would allow for the remaining piece in the hot end to be reliably pushed down with the next feeding filament.
