install steps can't be followed on Mac

It fails at making linkchecker - does not work if you follow these instructions - https://github.com/linkchecker/linkchecker/blob/master/doc/install.txt

There are workarounds for other things but this failure stops you from being able to do it (well stopped me anyway).
