For large detectors, manufacturing grids with a µm precision is pretty challenging. Jon's method looks simpler to use from an experimental point of view if:
Enough calibration images were taken with different position for the beam-center (ideally in all corners)
Rings are thin and isotropic (not spotty)
The density of ring is such that any module has at least one ring on any calibration image.
Diffraction angle is small enough to neglect parallax effect
